Good to know whose corner he's in.... Only the other day, Sky News were gloating that Boris got a phonecall from Biden before Ireland lol.

I think Obama was a fan of The High Kings too. Might have had them at Paddy's Day or something at the WH.

Big honour for The Chieftains if true!

This is great news for the Northern Irish. The USA will not allow trouble to start back up again,

Really? That's remarkably thick of Sky News, given it has been utterly self evident for a very long time that Biden is pro Ireland (and possibly more to the point, pro the GFA). That is very definitely 2+2=5000 of them.

Biden would lose his shit. At one point as VP he said that if the GFA wasn't enforced he would recommended that the US to remove AFB

Yes it was Adam Boulton with some correspondent or another. He (correspondent) was saying that Boris had tweeted about his phonecall and said that Michael (which he pronounced MIKAEL) Martin had tweeted something the day before but had deleted the tweet.

DH & I have Irish passports as do our dc but I thought their dc was were the chain broke so to speak.
@Shuddawuddacudda...Its not a stereotype. Ots real. Places like NYC and especially Boston their Fire Departments and Police Departments are mainly Irish Catholic. They took those jobs after first immigrating and the tradition withstands. Boston in particular still jas a lot of Irish immigration and many Irish Americans in that city still talk with an Irish accent. They have great fun with me. My accent is Irish and Southern twang. The funny part is I'm first generation Irish American. Meaning I was the first and only family member born in the States to 2 Irish immigrants.
When I first visited Boston in 1986 I saw a fella walking along the street wearing a T-Shirt that said IRA - FREEDOM FIGHTERS.

Leaannb · 16/11/2020 18:24

@Griselda1

Well he did say that Orange weren't welcome in the Whitehouse on St Patrick's day even though the main unionist parties were there so I think his attitude to Northern Ireland is more than worrying.
Are you talking about Biden? You think his stance of upholding the GFA is troublesome? Even though he is very pro reunification his only demand is that the GFA is upheld. He pushed Clinton greatly on that matter

Indeed - and it's great they stopped funding it too.
kurtainwoz · 16/11/2020 18:28

English of Irish origin don’t have this sense of pride. Is it because of the IRA? I grew up in the 80/90s and there was a sense of shame more than pride.

I grew up at the same point & I definitely noticed some had the view that Irish = IRA however I spent enough time in Dublin & Belfast to have a better understanding of the situation as opposed to just what the English papers portrayed.

Being a child of immigrant parents seemed normal to me due to schooling & growing up in a diverse part of London. I didnt actually make a friend who was of English heritage until uni so maybe that's why I never had feelings of "not belonging". I do very much feel like a Londoner though! 😁

kurtainwoz · 16/11/2020 18:31

Anti-Irish sentiment is definitely not a big thing anymore but I still think the "English" have very little understanding of the Troubles.

Leaannb · 16/11/2020 18:33

@DynamoKev...Yeah...A lot of IRA members still live in Boston and the bombings and such were actually funded by Irish pubs in Boston. Let's talk about the history of the Irish Mob in NYC and Boston

Aye Anti-Irish racism has been replaced with anti-English in a lot of places.
Leaannb · 16/11/2020 18:36

@DynamoKev...It wasn't the US Goverment funding it. It was the Irish Mob and members of the IRA funneling money through Irish pubs in Boston and NYC.

kurtainwoz · 16/11/2020 18:36

@DynamoKev Do you think that has anything to do with the Irish?

Don't take your children or stand too close when he visits.

I couldn't be more thrilled that Creepy Uncle Joe, as he is 'affectionately' called isn't proud to be English.

CremeEggThief · 16/11/2020 18:52

Well, a lot of people aren't proud to be English, let's face it, Crankley.

But I've never met another Irish person who isn't proud to be Irish.💚

Stripesnomore · 16/11/2020 19:04

How can it be a good thing that people of certain ethnicities cluster in US police departments?

How is that something to be proud of given BLM?

Imagine if he had referred to any other section of society in this way. He may think he's Irish but that's an appalling attitude,as was his weird reference about the bbc recently.

hennybeans · 16/11/2020 19:05

@Laiste I think the reason Americans place so much importance on their heritage might be because

 1. we are all immigrants, barring Native Americans and a lot of immigrants feel homesick and want their kids to remember "where they came from"
 2. when people came to America they would search out their home community to be among people who shared their language, religion, culture. If you came from Ireland for example, you would stick with other Irish who would also be Catholic, help you in need, etc. There was a lot of anti- Irish feeling in the US and that probably bonded the Irish community together more as they couldn't blend in with other immigrants.

BLM didn't exist during the Famines. It should have but it didn't. At this point its family tradition. They are just joining the family business. Its literally no different than people following in their fathers or mothers footsteps being a plumber, doctor or in my family's case joining the military. My husband's family has fought in every war since the Revolution. Every one of them. That tradition carries on today because our two son's have joined the military. So the tradition continues. Its no different.

It only breaks if children haven't been placed on the foreign births register before they have children themselves. If you have an Irish grandparent you are considered an Irish citizen and you just have to do the paperwork. You are not considered an Irish citizen if you just have an Irish great grandparent - basically if the Irish state did not know of the existence of your grandparent when you were born you are not considered an Irish citizen. If your children have Irish passports it keeps going as far as their children's children. Those grandchildren or their parents would have to place themselves on the foreign births register. You don't need to actually get the passport though.

It's immigrants of all types. There are Irish enclaves and Italian enclaves and China Town and Korea town and even South American immigrants choose to reside near each other
