To hang a tree from my curtain pole?

So, living is long and thin. Sofas in the middle facing forward. Behind is toys and entrance to kitchen

Normally tree goes in front window by telly.

DS be we bothered with it really. He'd take the odd bit off the bottom but wasn't really destructive. He's 5 now and I should be able to trust him not to do anything silly.

HOWEVER we have dastardly twins who will be nearly 1, pulling up and cruising, chewing ANYTHING that's inappropriate, definitely the sort to pull a tree over and bite the angel. Did o mention my lovely expensive baubles??

So the plan is to put it the other end, where we can't sit and see it but we will when we aren't sat down, which is most of the day until the kids are in bed tbh. We use a toy box to split the room so the dastardly twins can't get into the kitchen / DSs toys.

But that's a narrow space and Xmas morning not viable to sit around / or presents under.

So I'm thinking of handing baubles from the curtain pole (that had no curtains) in a teasingly shape to look like a tree, plus a few within the triangle to look like baubles.

Or just loads of different height ones along in a row.

Or any other ideas?

I did think maybe just lights on the window bit with the blinds we wouldn't see much and I want Xmas morning with a tree.

Can't even suggest moving it down on the actual nothing because frankly I'm dreading keeping the twins behaving as it is, without fresh fun in front of them!!

It'll give us a bit more room at lunch time too.

Did I mention my house really isn't very big?

Tldr: shall I make a tree out of battery and hand from my curtain pole because my tree isn't safe there?

What about enclosing your tree (or twins 😁) inside a playpen?

SleepingStandingUp · 16/11/2020 01:42

We have only one playpen. If I put tree in it where will I put the twins when I need to pee? And it's not really deep enough, they'd pull up to stand against it and be able to teach the branches I reckon. And there's two of them so they'd gang up on the tree and then fight over the spoils of war

Make a tree shape on the wall with tinsel and stick lights and baubles in it.

EmeraldShamrock · 16/11/2020 01:52

Check out the pet friendly tree in argos the branches are really high. The baubles sound like a handy idea or buy a large window decoration of a tree and pop lights on the window.
God I remember the stress of one 1y.o never mind 2. Grin

I bought an artificial tree and blocked it off in a corner and then bought extra large cheap plastic baubles that can’t possibly fit in even my mouth and they’ll stay until all’s safe in a few years.

Sit them in the bath !

I was going to suggest a "wall tree" too. I like this one, although I suppose you could even make your own (just obviously make sure you hang it in such a way that there's no risk the twins can get hold of it)

Wall space is a no go. There's literally window on wall 1, door and sofa, bookcase, door, bookcase on wall 2, window of wall 3, bookcase, cabinet, fireplace on wall 4.

Dumping the twins in the bath for Christmas is an option but they are VERY cute and would beseech me with their eyes for freedom and they'd win.

I'll check out pet friendly altho I wouldn't trust them to not gnaw at the base like beavers and topple the thing so they can eat the baubles anyway

Putting on cheap tat is an option. My tree is a chaos of mixed baubles and trinkets so I'm in no way prescious about how it looks, it's just full of memories. But I still don't want to be constantly rescuing poor tree from the babaies. And yes, I could parent them so they don't do it, but I'm outnumbered

I have no suggestions whatsoever but your twins sound adorable Grin

GreyishDays · 16/11/2020 08:29

Hang the twins from the pole instead? Through their sleeves, obviously, otherwise it would be cruel.

Or have a small tree on a table.

If you get a real tree you can cut the back off it to make it much slimmer. Does that open up any places you could put it?

ptumbi · 16/11/2020 08:35

Make a tree shape on the wall with tinsel and stick lights and baubles in it. this is what I did on my first xmas in this house (no tree) except I staple-gunned twigs to the wall and attached cheap baubles.

When I left ExH I didn't take any of the expensive baubles or decorations so I got a cheap big box pf balls from Tesco, tinsel and cheap chocolates to hang from the twigs.

I was redecorating anyway (eventually) and my kids were a lot old tho.

Plexie · 16/11/2020 08:40

You should have posted this in Christmas.

Do you have an IKEA nearby?

Or rig up something similar?

Thehop · 16/11/2020 08:50

Your house sounds bloody ace OP

Plexie · 16/11/2020 08:51

Turns out ladder Christmas trees are quite a thing. Try Googling "ladder hanging Christmas tree". Just don't make one long enough for the twins to try to climb.

CandyLeBonBon · 16/11/2020 08:54

Nothing useful to add. Just hopped on to say your twins sound hilarious!

recededpronunciation · 16/11/2020 08:55

Argos (and presumably other places) sell a wall mounted half christmas tree - split down the middle so that it sits flat to the wall. It’s about three feet tall I think. You could put that up out of the way of the dastardly duo.

shrill · 16/11/2020 08:55

Can you use the wall idea against the least used bookcase just for xmas?

PurpleHoodie · 16/11/2020 08:56

Could you put the flat "wall tree" on the back/front of the door?

PurpleHoodie · 16/11/2020 08:58

I actually like the idea of hanging baubles and lights from the curtain pole in the shape of a tree.

Reedwarbler · 16/11/2020 09:03

Do you have a windowledge or shelf? I have made a 'christmas tree' by selecting attractive twiggy branches, and then hanging baubles and lights on them. All you need is a large vase/container and a highish shelf or cupboard/sideboard out of the way of little fingers. You can also also spray the twigs white, silver or gold if you're feeling arty, or you could use branches from a pine tree if you fancy a greenery effect. Mind you, you could also buy a small artificial tree that will sit up somewhere high as well. I have got a small one that sits on the kitchen surfaces and it's surprisingly efective (it's about 2 foot tall).
Alternatively, as you have a curtain rail handy, you could drape a garland along it (one of those long and bushy fake pine ones) and decorate that with lights and baubles.

PigletJohn · 16/11/2020 09:09

Curtain pole might pull off the wall, leaving big holes in the plaster.

This will be quite tiresome.

ellentree · 16/11/2020 09:13

Can you do your plan and put the tree where you intend and just move it to it's normal place once they've gone to bed on Christmas Eve? So it's prominent for Christmas Day itself.

AvoidingRealHumans · 16/11/2020 09:14

Any suggestions I had have already been mentioned but just came on to say that if you do decide to put the tree up then can we have daily dastardly duo vs. the tree updates please.
I think this could be really entertaining.
Sorry, I know I am no help whatsoever.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/11/2020 09:16

Mine went in the playpen. Do you have a travel cot to stick the twins in whilst you go to the toilet?
