People spitting

I live in a big city and every day I will see at least one person (it’s nearly always men but occasionally women too) spit a large globule of saliva onto the pavement. It’s not pleasant at the best of times, but even more grim when we’re in a the midst of a pandemic. AIBU to be disgusted that people do this?

It is a completely gross and unnecessary habit.

Boom45 · 15/11/2020 22:29

Spitting is disgusting and I hate it.

Urgh. I saw someone in a uniform doing it the other day. I was tempted to report him to his employer. Disgusting at any time but especially now.

PolarnOPirate · 15/11/2020 22:42

I literally have never found it necessary to spit, why why why. Why do people have so much phlegm and why do they need to spit it out?? Tissues?? Swallow it if you must!

JaneJeffer · 15/11/2020 23:04

Disgusting!

StoneofDestiny · 15/11/2020 23:08

Gross!
There used to be signs on public transport saying 'no spitting' - to prevent spread of TB etc. It was a big killer.....how short memories are about public health warnings!

Greenhairbrush · 15/11/2020 23:16

It is revolting.

RolandSchitt · 16/11/2020 02:03

It's awful. If I see someone doing it first thing in the morning (when my stomach seems to be most sensitive) it makes me heave. Dirty buggers.

avamiah · 16/11/2020 02:16

I’m in London and I have to be honest and say I haven’t seen anybody doing this in the last couple of weeks as we are all wearing face masks or should be.

People aren’t required to wear face masks when walking on the street.

I’ve thought this recently too, OP. Vile at any time, but deliberately hosing the streets with your mucous in the middle of a pandemic takes a very special kind of person Hmm

Yeahnahmum · 16/11/2020 02:44

People from certain countries do it all the time... It is revolting yuck yuck

avamiah · 16/11/2020 03:09

Dongdingdong,
Yes I know, but people are wearing them now more and more here in London and everywhere .
Anyway my point was that I haven’t seen people spitting in the street recently.

Dongdingdong · 16/11/2020 03:16

Oh right, I guess it must just magically not be happening any more then. Anyway, back in the real world...

Dongdingdong,
It may be happening but I haven’t seen anybody spitting recently, but I could be mistaken as I don’t go about looking for Spitters .

Defenbaker · 16/11/2020 03:45

It's gross, esp. during a pandemic. It's mostly men that do it, from what I've seen.

Years back, I had a really nasty throat infection, where I could barely swallow anything, even my own saliva, until I'd been up for an hour and had sipped a hot drink. Then suddenly the stuff in my throat would loosen and I needed to cough it up, so I would go to the bathroom and cough it into a tissue, before flushing it down the loo. I won't describe the stuff I was coughing up, but suffice to say it wasn't something anyone would swallow. So, I do understand that sometimes people need to properly clear their throats, but nobody should be casually spitting onto the street, especially now. If they have some kind of ongoing problem they should at least use a tissue to cover their mouth when coughing, or better still, not venture out in public unless absolutely essential.

Ericaequites · 16/11/2020 03:48

It’s a filthy and unhygienic habit. Even spitting phlegm into a paper hankie at home is difficult for me.

Spitting is disgusting, I hate it so much.

DetectiveRandySomething · 16/11/2020 05:55

I've noticed it once or twice lately. It's fucking rank.

PaperMonster · 16/11/2020 07:11

I work at a college and I see a lot of the students spitting when I go up town and there are big groups of them hanging about.

userxx · 16/11/2020 07:18

Just rank.

I was sat in a queue of traffic and the woman in the car In front wound down her window and did the most disgusting greenie spit, I was heaving.
