Does anyone else have a mantra?

As a single parent to one DD, working full time, mine is, "Be your own best friend." I.e. have a wine when you need one, or a lie in, leave a cup out the night before with a teabag ready, lay out DD's clothes.

DD's is, "Be kind, have fun." If you're not being kind then having fun isn't ok. You must be both.

Anyone else? I often thank "yesterday me" for the stuff she did for me today...is that odd?!?

YABU = I'm a weirdo
YANBU = that's ace!

@Seafog

Here and now, what can I do?
That's a good one to keep you in the present & stop you catastrophising !
Ohtherewearethen · 15/11/2020 21:53

As cheesy as it sounds, I like to believe that

Things alright turn out alright in the end. If they're not alright, it's not the end.

An equivalent, I suppose, of 'this, too, shall pass'.
I also like the idea of being thankful for 'enough'.

BestOption · 15/11/2020 21:54

@SchrodingersImmigrant

"Don't be afraid to say 'oh, fuck that' and walk away"
Hmmm there's a situation I'd be wise to apply that to right now, but I just can't, yet.

I had to go on a weekend about work... wasn't looking forward to it... made up a mantra ... 'Radiate exquisite beauty, charm and calm', and a milder version 'Radiate grace, charm and calm'. It was so unlikely it made me laugh every time I returned to it. Definitely improved my weekend.

Don’t look backwards it’s not the direction you’re travelling in

AllByMySelfDontWannaBe · 15/11/2020 21:57

Mine is:

Everything happens for a reason

Not in the woo sense but that everything even bad things shape some part of you for the better if you let them

Seafog · 15/11/2020 21:57

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants thanks, I get caught up in my anxiety sometimes, and it helps me break out of thinking mode and into acting mode

PerseverancePays · 15/11/2020 21:59

‘Don’t water the tomatoes!’ Helps me when I’m worrying too much. The worries are the tomato plants, if I let them dry out they die. To switch off I do some gratitudes and change activity. Works for me.

EspressoX10 · 15/11/2020 22:03

To the left nothing is right
To the right nothing is left
Just keep going forward

katmarie · 15/11/2020 22:10

Mine is 'will this really matter a year from now?' Helps me put things into perspective. Also as the mum of two under three, I find myself thinking, 'this too shall pass' quite a lot. And if all else fails, 'the trick is to keep breathing' not so much a mantra as a song lyric, but reminds me to breathe, focus and remember that as long as I'm breathing, the worst hasn't happened.

@user1471453601

I have a mantra, one given to me thirty years ago when I started learning TM. I have no intention of ever sharing it with anyone.

It's served me well over the years, but it's mine. Everyone who learns TM has their own, individual mantra

I read years ago that everyone got given a routine mantra based on their age and maybe sex, I've forgotten the specifics - it's not individual at all, but as you usually/used to pay a lot for the instruction, you assume it is special and individual to you. eg:

CalmConfident · 15/11/2020 22:14

I am calm, confident and in control. I progress forward with ease. Used often when running and even changed my user name to match 😊

sandragreen · 15/11/2020 22:15

Love these.

Like a PP I have my own personal mantra which is very personal and I won't repeat here, but it is akin to a quick morning summing up of counting my blessings.

Aside from that. I like "Life is meaningless and everything dies." It just puts everything in perspective Grin

grassisjeweled · 15/11/2020 22:16

Don't let the bastards grind you down, in Latin

Nostrings457 · 15/11/2020 22:19

Where there is life there is hope

Inextremis · 15/11/2020 22:22

I have two: 'Spring is coming' and 'this too shall pass'.

DuesToTheDirt · 15/11/2020 22:26

Mine, after something goes wrong, is "Nobody's dead!" DD says I set the bar very low Grin

Tolleshunt · 15/11/2020 22:28

Are you gonna fuck about, or are you gonna do it

Adopted because I’m a world-class procrastinator. It works surprisingly well.

Peace43 · 15/11/2020 22:32

Our family one is “what are you, a doormat? Wipe the welcome off your forehead”

Jeezoh · 15/11/2020 22:32

Mine is JFDI - Just Fucking Do It. Trying something is almost always better than doing nothing.

CupboardMonster · 15/11/2020 22:32

A favourite from DH late grandma is: do it with a good grace or don't do it at all.

It certainly helps me say no to things that I can't guarantee a good grace for, even if that's not quite how she meant it Grin

hennersley · 15/11/2020 22:34

Nobody is going to stand up at your funeral and say "she was so slim, it was amazing how she still fit in to her size 8 jeans"

Resisterance · 15/11/2020 22:47

I instigated one recently after really going through the mill. Its written by my bed so I see it when I wake up and can say it out loud - I am a happiness attractor

cheesecrack · 15/11/2020 22:53

@hennersley

Nobody is going to stand up at your funeral and say "she was so slim, it was amazing how she still fit in to her size 8 jeans"
That's brilliant.

Mine is really just not to sweat the small stuff Smile

FusionChefGeoff · 15/11/2020 23:00

It doesn't fucking matter.

I spent far too long worrying, too much angst, too much importance on stuff that really just doesn't fucking matter.

I'm much more serene now but occasionally need to remind myself that, ultimately, the stuff I stress about, rarely fucking matters.
