Does anyone else have a mantra?

As a single parent to one DD, working full time, mine is, "Be your own best friend." I.e. have a wine when you need one, or a lie in, leave a cup out the night before with a teabag ready, lay out DD's clothes.

DD's is, "Be kind, have fun." If you're not being kind then having fun isn't ok. You must be both.

Anyone else? I often thank "yesterday me" for the stuff she did for me today...is that odd?!?

YABU = I'm a weirdo
YANBU = that's ace!

I am emotionally and mentally resilient.
Today I am going to be the best version of me that I can be.

Seafog · 15/11/2020 21:35

Here and now, what can I do?

Royalbloo · 15/11/2020 21:35

Royalbloo · 15/11/2020 21:35

So maybe I'm not a utter weirdo!? Who knew!

Don't be a dick - used regularly when the kids talk about religious beliefs, my answer is it all boils down to - don't be a dick. Can't go far wrong with it as a motto

Imissmoominmama · 15/11/2020 21:36

Whenever I’m struggling, I tell myself to look for the solution rather than focusing on the problem.

I used to use, ‘Be proactive, not reactive’ when my kids were small.

And as twee as it may sound, I really do believe that honesty is the best policy.

And "No is a complete sentence!"

My nan used to say, "Do you have a problem right now? If you did, you'd be fixing it."

The family motto is “no one likes a welcher” ie if you’ve said you’ll do something you’d better bloody do it.

Completely unoriginal but I channel Tom Hanks with the perennial “this too shall pass” and I apply it to the highs and lows. Everything feels horribly hard and tomorrow looks shit? This too shall pass. It’s all going smoothly and life feels great? This, too, shall pass Grin

Ylvamoon · 15/11/2020 21:38

When things get tough, its "The day has 24 hours or 48 half hours"
For bigger, things it's: "you only regret the things you didn't do" - this has left me in some strange situations.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 15/11/2020 21:39

I’m must admit to finding Frozen 2’s ‘when you can’t see the future do the next right thing’ surprisingly helpful Blush

whitewineandmagnums · 15/11/2020 21:40

My dad's favourite saying..."don't let the bastards grind you down"

Andsomywatchbegins · 15/11/2020 21:40

Mine is something my Grandma used to say: 'this too will pass'.
It really helps me.

Royalbloo · 15/11/2020 21:40

I used to quite like this:

Every day has 24hrs

  • 8 for work
  • 8 for sleep
  • 8 for you

Use them wisely and steal from the work or sleep bit if you can.

Someone called Anna told me that in Mexico and she called herself Anna-key, like Anarchy. She was fab.

"Do the next right thing" is mine.

Royalbloo · 15/11/2020 21:43

Another one when I was super annoyed with a colleague, my Mum said, "To someone else, she is the most important person in the world."

Ok, I hated her (honestly, I had good reason) but when I was annoyed I could just breathe and think, "this annoying mother fucker is REALLY important to someone else." Lol - but it really helped

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 15/11/2020 21:44

Mine is much hated on MN, but it helped me keep my life together (mostly anyway) when my Dad died.

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... It's about learning to dance in the rain

I didn't have to feel it be happy, that storm wasn't going to pass anytime soon, but I had to learn to live around the pain & anger.

I read this one in here yesterday & I wish I'd heard it when my Dad died & that I'd been able to apply it.

Live MORE for the ones who have gone.

@user1471453601 sorry if I sound very stupid, what’s TM, please?

lazylinguist · 15/11/2020 21:48

I quite like 'If you can't get out of it, get into it'. i.e. there are things in daily life you don't really want to do, but can't get out of doing, so it's better to find ways of enjoying them, or at least making them feel like less of a grind, rather than being grumpy about them.

Royalbloo · 15/11/2020 21:50

Transcendental Meditation I believe user1473878824

Sidge · 15/11/2020 21:50

I have a few.

As a single parent - “everybody fed, nobody dead” and “Don’t sweat the small stuff”.

As a single woman - “you are worthy of better”.

Generally with life - “fuck that shit”.

WhenSheWasBad · 15/11/2020 21:50

I love these. Also a big fan of “this too shall pass”

I also like “good enough is good enough”

AriesTheRam · 15/11/2020 21:50

This too shall pass

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 15/11/2020 21:51

@Purplestorm83. 'This too shall pass' has got me through a LOT - from breakups to teething & I think it's SO ingrained in me now that it's just part of me & my thinking.
