I am standing in the kitchen appalled at how rude she is being.

She is not Laura Kuenssberg - this is not a political interrogation, but a teasing out of the guest’s personality with music choice.

I feel like complaining - but don’t know how. She is a terrible host anyway, you can tell she’s reading off a bit of paper - very wooden.

They should hire me! I like talking to people and wouldn’t snipe at guests I didn’t approve of....

Eh? She did nothing of the sort.

IhateBoswell · 15/11/2020 12:12

Well was she rude or wooden? You seem to have two different gripes 🤔

IrmaFayLear · 15/11/2020 12:38

Rude and wooden!

I think Lauren Laverne is a great presenter - on DID and on her 6Music show. I haven’t listened to today’s DID yet, but am looking forward to it now. I’d rather the presenter was direct and honest than sycophantic - it’s not as if it’s the Steve Wright show on Radio 2, FFS.

FannysSteadiedBuffs · 15/11/2020 12:42

I didnt think she was wooden or rude. She sounded a little annoyed at first at being used as a party political broadcast "can you assure me that these choices arent the result of a focus group" - but she sounded like she'd warmed to him by the Helen Fielding bit. "Hoe long did it take you to get over the disappointment" was a brilliant question Grin

IrmaFayLear · 15/11/2020 12:47

I don’t like sycophantic interviewing either.

I don’t think she’s great. I think interviewing/discussing is a great art which few can master. People sound like the Spanish Inquisition, very awkward or just cloying.

I really like LL-I think she’s fab generally; I will have to listen. What did she say that you found rude?

Meepmeeep · 15/11/2020 12:51

Would you have felt the same if it was BoJo she was interviewing? Nah, doubt it. Appalled - bit of an ott reaction there.

nosswith · 15/11/2020 12:56

Laura Kuenssberg does not do political interrogations, unlike Sophy Ridge, Beth Rigby or Vicki Young. Hence why Boris Johnson will only be interviewed by her.

DorisDances · 15/11/2020 13:36

I like LL as a presenter but she is not a great interviewer on Desert Island Discs - she is too obviously reading from a script and doesnt engage with the subject in a way that means they relax and a true conversation develops.

Haven't listened to it, but that's a fair question.

Cameron went on and picked the likes of The Smiths, Radiohead, Lana Del Ray and The Killers.

waltzingparrot · 15/11/2020 22:08

He picked Stormzy !!! Call me cynical.

FannysSteadiedBuffs · 16/11/2020 07:49

I was ok with the bit of classical, bit of pop, mum's favourite Jim Reeves - but like seriously his favourite Stormzy Grin That tipped me into disbelief.

Thereluctantstepmother · 16/11/2020 07:52

Stormzy! 🤣 jumping on the Jeremy Corbyn fan base.
Very odd!

RelightMyPfizer · 16/11/2020 07:53

Lauren Laverne doesn't interview anyone on DD, it just becomes the LL how much can I talk and not listen or show any interest or look like I have done any personal research programme

It is a sad end to what has been a great programme for year

Nuffaluff · 16/11/2020 07:55

Picking the ‘Three Lions’ song is so so a ‘focus group’ choice. Trying to appeal to the Labour voters they lost last time.
I mean, who really likes that song.
I bet he’s really into opera and Phillip Glass.

Violetparis · 16/11/2020 08:06

I saw his list of tracks and I'm sceptical they are not political choices. Stormzy to appeal to the left in the Labour party he has pissed off and Baddeil/Skinner to appeal to the average person on the street. Or maybe I'm just a cynic ?

Snapsnapcrocodile · 16/11/2020 08:22

Not sure it’s actually possible to be into Philip Glass.
Mollscroll · 16/11/2020 08:29

I didn’t think she was rude at all. But it was a crap interview. DID is not the place - and she is not the person - for political interviews so all the questions about that and the EHRC report were pointless. More interesting when he talked about the Jewish traditions they have at home - but no question about his own faith. The bit about his own mum never having been able to talk to his children was very Sad

I don’t know that this was all focussed grouped -he is very into football, that’s true. I just think he’s not all that into music.

You haven't said in what way she was rude.

Are you surprised that a politician interviewed is asked about their politics? Or about recent controversial developments? LL wouldn't be much of an interviewer if he didn't ask.

StoneofDestiny · 16/11/2020 09:22

Well - that clearly wouldn't work with the Scottish Labour voters they lost completely.

IrmaFayLear · 16/11/2020 09:29

It was Question: pause. Question: pause. She didn't engage. I felt a strong sense of disapproval.

She was interviewing a person known for being in politics. It was not supposed to be a political interview. Even if she had been interviewing Donald Trump I would have expected more teasing out of life stories and the background to the music. Crikey, even Hitler or Stalin. Andrew Marr can interrogate Hitler. Lauren Laverne should concentrate on his musical choices. You don't have to fawn over a guest, just do your job... well.

Totally irrelevant but I used to sit next to her in school and play Tetris on her gameboy under the desk in Science.

FannysSteadiedBuffs · 16/11/2020 09:50

I listened to it directly after the two before - David Mitchell and Hilary McGrady and LL seemed much more engaging/engaged with them. But they were also far less wooden, so. Perhaps to be a politician you just have to be very bland, in everything.
