AIBU to think this lockdown is pathetic

Why are so many places still open and not enforcing social distancing? I went to the garden centre today and they had a whole big Christmas section and it was packed, including a tractor for the kids to play on. There was no queue system to get in and all the Christmas displays were so close together it was impossible to keep a distance anyway.
I know I obviously could have stayed at home and will be in the future (apart from my local shop, one trip to Primark and a quite few trips to the pets shop for dog food I've done all shopping on line since March)
Most of my socialising is with school mum's and although everyone is aware we are only allowed to go for a walk in pairs they all stand together chatting in the playground. The primary school is next to a large secondary school and we have to fight our way through crowds of teenagers before pick up every day. The whole of year 11 are in self isolation as there's so many positive cases. My adult daughters boyfriend is allowed into work as they all tested negative last week. It just seems a limp excuse of a lockdown for me.

@thecatsatonthewall

Sure there are plenty of things that are shut, as listed by icedpurple but this LD mk2 is nothing like the mk1 version.

People seem to be pretty doing what they want, neighbours are having guests around, shops & roads very busy.

I guess the biggest restriction that will have some effect is the closure of pubs/restaurants but even that is doubtful as folk seem to have swapped the pub for the home as their social hub.

I feel sorry for the small businesses forced to close but the Range etc stays open.

But I don't think pubs being shut will make a big difference Before LD2 started, pubs and restaurants according to the ONS made up less than 10% of transmission. Schools meanwhile made up over 35% and they're open. All the while schools are open, and kids are going to and fro on buses and around each other and their families, it will spread. There already murmurings of restrictions continuing

The stats come from PHE rather than ONS and they reflect the number of known outbreaks in different settings which on its own is quite misleading.

Outbreaks in educational settings are much easier to identify and trace than outbreaks in pubs which often go unnoticed. On top of that, outbreaks in pubs are much more likely to turn into super spreader events impacting several individuals while outbreaks in educational settings are more likely to be contained. During the period from June 1 to the end of the school year a typical school outbreak included two adults and no children. Now the numbers might've grown but still... a school outbreak is easier to contain that a super spreading event in the hospitality centre.

Looks like both Germany and Netherlands have managed to get their cases under control by restricting hospitality. Non essential shops, some personal services (e.g. hairdressers) and schools have remained open.

Perhaps they should have let small independent shops who are more likely to go bust and have proper social distancing remain open rather than big chains like The Range

NullcovoidNovember · 15/11/2020 21:07

They emoji I Know!! Far easier to control a little shop than the range I don't get it, also barbers... Again with mask and visor... And customer in mask how is that not OK?

@FreshFreesias

OP, have you thought about applying to be a Corvid Marshall?
Do you know what I'd love to be. I cancelled my holiday although I was officially allowed to go as I don't think people should be holidaying in a pandemic. I have done almost all my shopping online since March, our family brought no new clothes this year, I sourced everything we needed from local free sites and ebay, we've stayed at home and away from crowded places, we found walks where we would see, just a couple of people in the whole day, not once did we eat out to help out, no bars, no cafes, no family days out apart from walks and NT. I've worked throughout as a nurse and now I get slagged off for my one misguided trip out, I thought I was going to a garden centre not a Christmas wonderland where there everything was so crushed together and there was no choice but to carry on through it to get to the tills and exit. We are working our arses off at hospital I work in, a colleague and friend was in ITU for 6 weeks, it was a miracle he survived. I'm sorry I'm tired and angry.

I'm a nurse too but I'm glad to see people out and about, and have been out and about myself/on a UK holiday. I don't see the problem in all honesty. IMO life is to be lived and risk is to be managed.

Feministicon · 15/11/2020 21:38

It’s the hypocrisy of going somewhere and then moaning that it’s busy that’s getting you ‘slagged off’

  • yet so many people seem to think Bojo is doing a great job. I don't know anyone who thinks that.*

I nearly fell off my chair the other day when my lifelong, die hard Tory mother said that she thought he was doing an appalling job and that even when he resigns (she wants him to) they haven't got anybody decent to take over. Normally she'd defend them to the hilt no matter what they did.

I hope op does, somebody needs to keep those pesky birds under control.

I thought Bojo had a rating approval of -30 last week. Worst ever for any pm?
