AIBU to think this lockdown is pathetic

Why are so many places still open and not enforcing social distancing? I went to the garden centre today and they had a whole big Christmas section and it was packed, including a tractor for the kids to play on. There was no queue system to get in and all the Christmas displays were so close together it was impossible to keep a distance anyway.
I know I obviously could have stayed at home and will be in the future (apart from my local shop, one trip to Primark and a quite few trips to the pets shop for dog food I've done all shopping on line since March)
Most of my socialising is with school mum's and although everyone is aware we are only allowed to go for a walk in pairs they all stand together chatting in the playground. The primary school is next to a large secondary school and we have to fight our way through crowds of teenagers before pick up every day. The whole of year 11 are in self isolation as there's so many positive cases. My adult daughters boyfriend is allowed into work as they all tested negative last week. It just seems a limp excuse of a lockdown for me.

so you went to a non essential shop today and your moaning that other people were there too 🤣🤣

Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2020 20:02

@PumpkinPie2016

The lockdown itself looks like it may be starting to help as cases are starting to plateau.

I personally haven't been anywhere except work (I'm a teacher so can't work from home) and the supermarket for a weekly shop. Normally I do click and collect but as soon as lockdown was announced there were no slots available Angry

I went to the supermarket alone only to be surrounded by family groups -2 able bodied adults with a number of children/teens - why?! Why can't one adult stay home with the kids or wait in the car if transport is an issue. Obviously if someone is a single parent it's different.

Have a look at this thread. Lots of valid reasons why but also lots of 'because we can'. 'because we want to' etc. And obviously the 'Covid police' accusations...

You went to the garden centre. You are part of the problem you’re talking about.

Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2020 20:05

@sirfredfredgeorge

I thought the Garden Centres were open as gardening is good for mental health/wellbeing or something

No, the justification is so you can grow your own food (although of course few new plants are needed in novemeber…) but the reality is that they're places frequented by middle england tory voters so obviously the government panders to their only hope of being reelected.

Lol at grow your own food. In 4 weeks during November. Grin In reality everyone's out buying inflatable Santas for their garage roof.
RelightMyPfizer · 14/11/2020 20:05

What gardening type emergency did you have that couldn't wait a few days and be source from Amazon?

Rosehip10 · 14/11/2020 20:13

Oh, we haven't had one of these "faux outrage" threads re lockdown on MN for, I don't know a couple of hours? So thanks OP!

Doordine · 14/11/2020 20:17

I don't understand how you can complain about the garden centres being open and packed when you yourself went there? You are part of the reason they were packed?

Don't get me wrong, I fully believe live and let live and I also worry that the lockdowns will be being paid for by our children for many decades to come, so I think it's good they are open as it benefits the economy. I just don't understand why you expect everyone to stay home and not go to shops and yet it is fine for you to.

WhoWants2Know · 14/11/2020 20:17

People who grow their own food do actually continue through the winter.

Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2020 20:20

@WhoWants2Know

I guess they do but I was thinking of people starting because they had to survive 4 weeks of lockdown in November.
Aridane · 14/11/2020 20:23

@38weekswithno2

I always find it funny when people complain about somewhere being crowded or whatever when they're there too! 🤣
OP was complaining about it not being covid secure - plenty of ways to do that but the shop has chosen not to do so
ButtWormHole · 14/11/2020 20:23

I actually agree. What’s the point if The Range is still open with families of 5 or more shopping together?

nosswith · 14/11/2020 20:24

The so-called lockdown is not really one but a form of tier 3 restrictions and a little bit more. A measure that Mr Johnson had to be panicked into as with the original restrictions in March, in this case five or six weeks later than it should have been.

Apart from fatigue at restrictions, the observance of them diminished to nothing more than peer pressure or fear the moment that Dominic Cummings was not sacked.

There is also no logic in some of them, especially that outdoor individual sports such as golf, swimming and horse riding are not allowed.

Pixxie7 · 14/11/2020 20:25

People need to get out, they are restricted to where they go, you don’t have to join them. Life is a risk every day and I think people are capable of establishing their own risk.

shinynewapple2020 · 14/11/2020 20:26

A lot of people Leona my think the lockdown 'pathetic'
Problem is half of them think we should lockdown harder and half of them think there should be no lock down at all.
Cases are still rising in my local authority. They have risen very steeply over the past 2-3 weeks .

ShebaShimmyShake · 14/11/2020 20:26

Jaxhog · 14/11/2020 20:28

Cases are plateauing. If it’s working without destroying the economy, good.

Nope! Neither cases nor deaths are plateauing. (I wish they were). Unless we all behave responsibly - they won't. I've also seen groups of mums and kids hanging around outside shops (and in shop doorways). I think that, unless people have sick friends or have lost someone (I have) they think the rules don't apply to them.

A lot of people probably think .....

RosesandPumpkins · 14/11/2020 20:29

I can’t believe you went to a garden centre and have the audacity to complain about people at garden centres! You’re the problem OP!

cansu · 14/11/2020 20:29

You socialise with school mums.
You went to a garden centre.
You went to Primark.

Yet, you are critical of other people shopping and socialising like you...

maddiemookins16mum · 14/11/2020 20:30

It was packed because YOU went too.
We’ve been told to stay at home except for very, very specific reasons.

Mischance · 14/11/2020 20:32

I see no problem with going to a garden centre that is obeying the rules. This one was not - that is where the problem lies. I would report them.

ChristmasRedSpottyScarf · 14/11/2020 20:34

Um.. this.
AlwaysLatte · 14/11/2020 20:43

I didn't know garden centres were open, because it's a lockdown and I've only been going out for essentials. Your post reminds me of someone one here who went to the beach in the first lockdown and complained about the number of people.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 14/11/2020 20:44

@RelightMyPfizer

What gardening type emergency did you have that couldn't wait a few days and be source from Amazon?
yeah, cos buying from Amazon is such a great alternative!

There's no reason a garden centre can't open with strict social distancing measures in place. It's probably one of the safer shops you could be in right now.

Leflic · 14/11/2020 20:45

I don’t think Op us being a hypocrite. This was one of the few times she’s been out since March and was commentating on the poor safety measures.
There’s a difference between going to a non essential shop once a week for an hour and carrying on as if nothing has changed.
