AIBU to think this lockdown is pathetic

Why are so many places still open and not enforcing social distancing? I went to the garden centre today and they had a whole big Christmas section and it was packed, including a tractor for the kids to play on. There was no queue system to get in and all the Christmas displays were so close together it was impossible to keep a distance anyway.
I know I obviously could have stayed at home and will be in the future (apart from my local shop, one trip to Primark and a quite few trips to the pets shop for dog food I've done all shopping on line since March)
Most of my socialising is with school mum's and although everyone is aware we are only allowed to go for a walk in pairs they all stand together chatting in the playground. The primary school is next to a large secondary school and we have to fight our way through crowds of teenagers before pick up every day. The whole of year 11 are in self isolation as there's so many positive cases. My adult daughters boyfriend is allowed into work as they all tested negative last week. It just seems a limp excuse of a lockdown for me.

i work in a supermarket , unbelievably busy today so many customer complaining , trying to ask people to distance on my checkout i was told to "fuck off" " dont fucking tell me where to stand" "why should i have to distance" etc etc ,i had to walk away and get someone to take over cos im sick off the constant crap and the reason we are short staffed is because staff are shielding ,tested positive or isolating

I wish there was stricter rules on being rude to shop staff/not following the guidelines. I don't think it is fair they can be rude and get away with it.

Ginogineli · 14/11/2020 22:42

Non essential travel is banned though for whole England so holidays are banned

LisaLee333 · 14/11/2020 22:48

@Applepea1 The main reason for this lockdown was to stop the idiots congregating in pubs and restaurants, and to stop people gathering anywhere, where there would be crowds standing shoulder to shoulder.

Unfortunately, some people think the rules shouldn't apply to them, and were still going out in droves 3 or 4 nights a week, and spilling onto the streets for hours on end. THAT is why we had this lockdown. And THAT is why some shops are still open, garden centres are still open, many travelodges and argos stores and primark stores and wilkos and B & M stores, WH Smiths, etc etc, are still open (when they were all shut before.)

Because, even though you can get quite a few crowds in garden centres and primark and B & M etc, they are not the same kind of selfish idiots who caused the second lockdown. It was put in to control the selfish and the stupid, who carried on partying like it was 19 fucking 99, refusing to wear masks, and IGNORING social distancing. (And sadly, a few of these individuals do occasionally appear in the shops and abuse the shop staff for having the audacity to ask them to stand 2 metres away from others, and wear a mask if they can.)

I just hope these twits are proud of themselves, as their behaviour has contributed towards 10s of 1000s of extra covid cases, and multiple 100s of extra deaths.

I don't expect they care though, as I saw people laughing and mocking on twitter fairly recently, about the 'boomer killer.' Apparently, it's hilarious that covid is taking out lots of boomers (aka the over 60s!) Obviously don't give a shit about their grandparents then, or even their parents, uncles and aunts. Horrible people. Hmm

Oh, and I agree with the posters here saying LOL at you complaining and whingeing when YOU were there too. PMSL!

Puts me in mind of a petty little child at school called Gina when I was 7 or 8. We were saying prayers for one of the teachers who had sadly died aged only 49, and we were told to close our eyes and stay quiet for 2 minutes. When the 2 minutes were up. 'Gina' said to out form teacher 'Mr Clarke, LISA had her eyes open for part of that time!!!' Tried to grass me up, but got a short shrift from Mr Clarke, who said 'well Gina, clearly YOU had YOUR eyes open, or you would not have seen Lisa with HER eyes open!' And he gave her a stern look. Hmm

Your name isn't Gina is it OP? Grin

LisaLee333 · 14/11/2020 22:50

*our form teacher.

Fizbosshoes · 14/11/2020 22:53

We always used to laugh at my mum because every christmas she would have a moan about people going overboard at christmas piling their trolley high with food "and the shops will only be closed for a day or 2" .....while she was in the same supermarket piling her trolley high with all our food!Grin

safariboot · 14/11/2020 22:56

YANBU. Here in Birmingham for whatever reason it feels like people just don't care:

The roads say it all, for a start. No noticeable reduction in traffic.

My workplace provides adult education. Students take their lunch in the common area with no social distancing in sight.

Supermarkets busy but rarely any control over numbers inside. One-way systems and managed queues have gone.

Poundland today had the queue in the first aisle in so anyone entering had to walk close past it. And everyone was up the arse of the person in front.

Generally poor mask compliance.

I don't know if it's muddled government messages, fatigue, Facebook rumours, or what. But it is nothing like it was in March and April. Apart from shop closures, it feels no different to October was.

And I'll be honest. When I see all this, it makes me think, why should I bother? Why should I inconvenience myself when so many other people are carrying on with business as usual?

So that was definitely on my mind when I went to Tesco today to return an item and get my tenner back, thank you very much.

gingerwhinger0 · 14/11/2020 22:56

I think they should have kept the shops open, they have done all the SD stuff. All that's happening now is people are crowding in the shops that are open. If they where all open shoppers would be more evenly dispersed.
Maybe pubs could have been kept open for for food to keep them ticking over, with alcohol limited, seeing how pissed people don't seem to have any idea how to social distance.
It does seem a bit unfair how a businesses like the Range, or even M&S that sells food can remain open to sell food and everything else, but some shops not.

MadameMeursault · 14/11/2020 23:06

Hypocrite

Kokosrieksts · 14/11/2020 23:31

Here we go again, it’s fine when you want to go to the garden centre or Primark, but an absolute crime when others do. Yawn, seen so many of these threads about others doing the wrong thing whilst your trip was only once and so necessary..... yawn...

Sabrina124 · 15/11/2020 08:07

I think this lockdown is pointless if schools, garden centres and tourist atttactions such as National Trust are alllowed to open. I thought the point was to stay at home unless you had to leave for an essential reason? I know some of those attractions can count as a place of 'exercise' but come on.

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/11/2020 08:31

I thought the point was to stay at home unless you had to leave for an essential reason?

Nope, there's nothing about essential, that's just made up mumsnet crap. Mostly because staying at home for all but essential reasons will turn everyone into even more sedentary overweight people that will kill more than covid will. Most people need to go out to stay even rudimentarily fit, when you stay in doors you stay seated.

Going out for exercise or outdoor recreation with your household or with one other person (under 5's count) is allowed and the guidance even says "should". And of course there's other Chief Medical Officer guidance saying you need to exercise etc.

The invention about only leaving the house for essential reasons is very harmful.

Runnerduck34 · 15/11/2020 08:47

This is lockdown light, nowhere near as strict as last time, the government made a decision based on education, the economy and what they think people will tolerate. Sometimes its contradictory: class bubbles in school but free for all on school bus, and school gate, garden centres and off licences being essential shops, still go to work if you can't work from home, playgrounds open etc so lots more opportunities to mix this time.
I went to garden centre yesterday ( dons hard hat!).
I got some pots to plant tulip bulbs, perhaps not essential but it is allowed, I was the only person in the outdoor plant section of garden centre. However the christmas section inside was heaving , its set out in a narrow labyrinth of aisles, so not much chance of social distancing, at 49 I was youngest person there- cant say that often now! People make their own choices within current guidelines and there are some situations where social distancing isnt easy. Hopefully this lighter version of lockdown will do enough, bit too early to tell atm.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 08:53

Runnerduck garden centre near me has just posted on local fb group inviting people to come and look at their amazing Christmas display and decorations. And it is amazing, moving reindeers and stuff.

But it’s meant to be open for plants isn’t it? And it’s inviting people in to look. I’m kind ofHmm

Sabrina124 · 15/11/2020 08:56

Yes leaving for exercise is essential. But is going to a tourist attraction essential? You can take a walk anywhere.

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/11/2020 09:16

There is nothing about only leaving for essential, the whole point is that "essential" is not in the law, you can leave home it doesn't have to be essential, just for a permitted reason, and as that includes outdoor recreation, then yes going to a tourist attraction is fine. It's not essential, but that doesn't matter the law does not require it to be.

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2020 09:20

Off to the Garden Centre for daily exercise. 😂

dottiedodah · 15/11/2020 09:40

All seems odd to me! M and S near me open for clothes ,Robert Dyas open as well .Garden Centres too !

MillieVanilla · 15/11/2020 09:49

Buy yet people will moan when we are still in the exact same position next year.
What annoys me is how the essential shops are being decided on.
To me, I would've liked if Matalan had of stayed open as it sells all sorts. I want to buy DD and DS some warm vests for under uniform as school is utterly freezing. DS needs new trainers too. Can I buy any in stores? Can I heck. And Amazon have clearly cottoned on as everything on there seems to be double the price.
Meanwhile, a pop up firework shop in my high street is open. I even asked a community officer out patrolling if that was even legal to be told yes for religious reasons. God knows what that meant as I thought for starters firework night was 5th November, and it was to do with Guy Fawkes trying to blow up parliament?
How are fireworks essential but keeping my DC's warm and in fitting footwear isn't?
I also think they should never have mentioned what point the vaccine was at as now everyone just sees that as the wonder cure and so sod the rules.

ImAllOut · 15/11/2020 10:09

Fireworks are for Diwali.

Feministicon · 15/11/2020 10:12

How small is your world that you haven’t even heard of Diwali

wintertravel1980 · 15/11/2020 10:12

Yes leaving for exercise is essential. But is going to a tourist attraction essential?

"Lockdown" is an emotive and catchy term used by the media. The official name for measures England has got right now is "New National Restrictions". These national restrictions say nothing about "leaving home for essential reasons" (the correct terminology is "specific purposes") and they do allow trips to some tourist attractions (e.g. national trust properties):

People can also exercise outdoors or visit an outdoor public place.

YeOldeTrout · 15/11/2020 10:19

Complain to THAT single garden centre & THOSE 2 schools OP. Those are the only places you've been to since March, apparently. How can you describe all of Lockdown as a Failure on the basis of behaviour observed at THREE places.

I feel sorry for you since you don't go out for some kind of exercise most days. Being so stuck at home would make my mental health very bad.

wintertravel1980 · 15/11/2020 10:19

Again, if the government could wave a magic want and stop all of us from socialising indoors with our friends and family, it would have been sufficient to keep R under 1. We could have kept everything else open (including most of hospitality with social distancing measures).

The primary reason for the "national measures" is to set the tone and reenforce the seriousness of the message. It is not to stop transmission in non essential shops (which is already minimal).

MillieVanilla · 15/11/2020 10:20

@Feministicon

Is it against some law that i wasn't aware? Fireworks seem to be a semi constant intrusion on my evenings from mid October until early December. Regardless, they are not essential, churches aren't open, Easter was a write off and I fully believe Christmas will be. Hence a shop selling fireworks is not an essential when supermarkets sell the things for weeks.
sst1234 · 15/11/2020 10:22

@flaviaritt

Cases are plateauing. If it’s working without destroying the economy, good.
It is destroying the economy, which makes it all the more farcical.
