Wtf? When did this become a bloody thing? Every single recipe I've googled today is accompanied by reems of pointless shit before it.

'Me and Tristan went for a picnic today in a meadow and the smell of the grass reminded me of bbqs we used to have as children so we went home and baked cookies' HmmConfused fucking loads of waffle! I don't want your life story I just want to know how you make cookies. Or how to cook sausages in an air fryer!!

JUST GIVE ME THE RECIPE!!!

@terrywynne

My people! I hate being presented with loads of waffle about their inspiration, all the things they tried etc. Just give the recipe already! Note, I cook because I need to eat not because I am a foodie so possibly not the target audience....

I also skip videos for any cooking or tutorials - I get some people like them but I just want simple written words and no banging on.

I do like cups though - especially for recipes like muffins. So simple. Except when a recipe asks for a cup of butter - how tightly am I supposed to pack it? Does it matter if there are air gaps?

American butter is sold in sticks.
1 stick is 8tbs or 1/4lb or 1/2 a cup
It eliminates the need to try to put it in a measuring cup.

Bloody waffly internet recipes!

I'm
Glad it's not just me!

I agree about the ‘recipes’ that are just assembly of jarred and tinned stuff. If I wanted to use a jar of sauce, I wouldn’t have googled for a recipe.

This is a good YouTube channel for people who feel similarly. m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fk2wjrYXSlo

Goodness, who'd have thought that different countries do things differently? Just Google how much a stick of butter is in grams, or how much a cup of something weighs if you don't have a set of cups. Even better, write it down so you don't have to look for the info next time.

I do agree that the pointless waffling before recipes is annoying.

When i went to San Diego i went in to a really lovely bookshop looking for baking books and all of them had "take a box of cakemix" drives me mad and also agree with OP about waffle.

I was reading about this a while back. Apparently it's a lot more normal in the USA to make cakes with cake mix. "Scratch cakes" are a specific thing which I think is seen as more European, somehow? There are lots of websites with things like "How to make a cake from scratch" - well yes, why else would I be looking up a recipe? I know you can get cake mix in UK supermarkets too, but in that case I wouldn't even googling for a recipe, would I? I'd just buy the cake mix and follow the instructions on the packet. Hmm

Not quite a recipe but I love XKCD for this

@tetonicpkates
I do have a lovely little bundt cake cook book called Kiss My Bundt, which is proper scratch recipes, but trawling through amazon 90% are take a packet of cake mix.
I thought I might actually find one in the US.
Even Bakedin cake kits use proper ingredients over here

ChocolateCherrybomb · 13/11/2020 18:19

You read a bit of waffle...
Get bored so scroll a bit...
Read a bit more waffle...
Repeat a dozen times...
Get to the "recipe".......
and it's a fucking link to someone else's site...
You click on the link...
Then start again...
Get to the recipe and in fucking cups n sticks using ingredients you've never heard of and can't get if you wanted too.

Oh joy.

WrongKindOfFace · 13/11/2020 18:25

I agree! I completely understand that they do it for ad revenue but it’s infuriating when the web pages won’t load properly or crash because of the all utter shit on the page.

Those are American ones. You should filter them out by saying UK or Indian only.

That's why I like BBC good food. No nonsense and they usually turn out perfectly,

veeeeh · 25/05/2021 19:39

Try this one. No music, no talk, just straight to the recipes and demos for yummy goodies. The subtitles are Italian, but I had no problem following them. I could watch this all night.

I've 'invented' Savoury Bread Pudding. 8oz of stale bread soaked in water, 1 egg and just add cheese, onion, leftover vegetables, crumbled stock cube, dry stuffing mix, experiment! (Tastes a bit like a quiche minus pastry..)

Armi · 25/05/2021 20:03

I love the BBC Food website. The comments are brilliant - along the lines of:

‘I made this the other night and it was great. I substituted chicken for the 500g of cheese, then added four chopped chillis instead of spring onions. Instead of parsley, I used coriander and added two spoonfuls of sumac instead of rosemary. We served it with jasmine rice instead of mashed potatoes and it was delicious.’

So glad I'm not alone, I can frequently be heard muttering "fuck off" as I navigate away from webpages or videos that don't cut to the chase.

"Officially, a US Cup is 240ml (or 8.45 imperial fluid ounces.) This is slightly different from an Australian, Canadian and South African Cup which is 250ml. "

FFS I've been making a Canadian chefs brownies for years and painstakingly converted the cups to grams but the conversion table I used was American, is nothing simple?

However, prompted by your post I googled the recipe again and the first hit is a fully converted recipe, I wasn't too far out.

It's a good recipe for anyone interested, I sometimes swap the pecans for chocolate chips.

Il refugio perfetti

I love that YouTube channel. If you want apple pie but are hopeless at pastry then this is the recipe for you. I wouldn't describe it as a cake, it has more of a shortbread texture.
