YerAWizardHarree · 13/11/2020 00:48

Wtf? When did this become a bloody thing? Every single recipe I've googled today is accompanied by reems of pointless shit before it.

'Me and Tristan went for a picnic today in a meadow and the smell of the grass reminded me of bbqs we used to have as children so we went home and baked cookies' HmmConfused fucking loads of waffle! I don't want your life story I just want to know how you make cookies. Or how to cook sausages in an air fryer!!

JUST GIVE ME THE RECIPE!!!

OP posts:
robloxnoob · 13/11/2020 09:17

Totally agree OP! I googled how long to stir fry frozen broccoli for last night and on the site I chose I had to scroll through SO much just to get to the actual advice which was two sentences long

BawJaws · 13/11/2020 09:21

Because we’re in a world where writing is laid next to nothing, and on the word count.

That’s it.

I’m a journalist and the worse than ever.
Recent contracts that I applied for were offering such poor rates that undecided is rather sit about watching telly.

BawJaws · 13/11/2020 09:22

Although reading that typo-riddled post.... maybe I am worth buttons anyway!!’

Whatwouldscullydo · 13/11/2020 09:22

Ha yes!!

When I look through a book after inspiration im happy to read about what gave you the idea and the alternative options etc

When I wanna quickly make some.breakfast pancakes for the kids id like a quick Google to be a bit more helpful.

coconuttyhead · 13/11/2020 09:25

Yep really annoying - it’s not as if the recipe has to be promoted, it was bloody looked up in the first place. Can’t imagine anyone benefiting from the smug nonsense that goes on forever - the actual recipe and method is like an afterthought!

SuperbGorgonzola · 13/11/2020 09:25

Agree with all of this thread! I tend to stick to BBC Good Food as much as possible as most recipe websites are bloody awful.

Mintychoc1 · 13/11/2020 09:26

Ha ha I agree on the YouTube films. And that’s nothing to do with advertising is it, it’s just the YouTuber wanting to drag out their little moment of fame.
I watched a YouTube film about fixing a PlayStation glitch once, and was treated to a long story of his nephew getting a PlayStation for Christmas and being upset by the glitch, and the cough and cold he’d had that had delayed him posting this particular film - it was half way through the film before he started talking about the actual fix. But you daren’t fast forward in case you miss a crucial bit!

unoeufisunoeuf1 · 13/11/2020 09:31

And after all the waffly shite, you think you've finally got to the recipe but there's an annoying bullet point LIST of why the recipe is good.

"These buns are:

  • Light
-scrummy
  • super-duper easy
  • Moreish
  • Yummy
  • Chocolatey......"
I BELIEVE YOU JUST GIVE ME THE RECIPE ALREADY
BrightYellowDaffodil · 13/11/2020 09:32

It depends. If it’s someone who is a good food writer, like Nigel Slater, then I love reading his preambles.

If it’s just a standard blog, padded out with waffle, adverts and a gazillion pictures of peas tumbling artfully into a bowl, or knives on a chopping board, then that gets right on my wick. Give me the recipe!

Amberleaf12 · 13/11/2020 09:32

100% agree with you OP

@Kokeshi123 my brother was moaning about the cup measurements recently and said the recipes with cup measurements always came out wrong which is why he avoids recipes with cup measurements ... he’d been using tea mugs for years. He had a mini breakdown in the kitchen when I produced my measuring cups.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 13/11/2020 09:34

Videos drive me insane. The only ones I ever watch are by Tasty as it’s literally just a short film of how to put the ingredients together, what it’s supposed to look like when you have and what you do with it after that. No waffle, no “Today I’m going to talk you though how to chop an onion. Now, let me tell you about how to choose which knife to use and how to hold it...”

LizzieMacQueen · 13/11/2020 09:35

Isn't all because of Instagram / SM of choice. Bloggy stuff.

I second the PP who said BBC food site is good. Thank goodness they backed down about removing that service.

Cookerhood · 13/11/2020 09:41

I was moaning about this only yesterday. Recipes & sewing sites. AaarghAngry

switswooo · 13/11/2020 09:43

I’ve become adept at slipping the waffle 😂

I watch t yes Pioneer Woman on the food channel and she does it too in a way, showing the kids doing activities out and about when I just want to look at food.

Apileofballyhoo · 13/11/2020 09:45

I hate videos too Daffodil.

YenniferOfVengeberg · 13/11/2020 09:46

@CaptainMyCaptain

It's exactly the same with sewing and knitting related things. They bang on about their life stories while I just want to learn how to do Kitchener Stitch (or whatever). I usually watch with the sound turned off and fast forward when there's no action. I suppose you can't do that with recipes.
Yes! My husband was looking a bit worried as I swore at you tube last night, but I wanted to see a German short row tutorial and they were just waffling on. The recipe thing is infuriating. A lot of instant pot recipes are American and it's just pages of drivel before the recipe.
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/11/2020 09:47

Drives me nuts too. Even if some people do enjoy it, they could have a button to link directly to the recipe

PurpleDaisies · 13/11/2020 09:50

The worst things are videos without the recipe in the comments so you’ve got to scrabble around finding a pen to try and write it all down.

PamsterWheel · 13/11/2020 09:50

I feel EXACTLY the same! Relieved when there is a 'jump to' button.

CoalTit · 13/11/2020 10:08

"Officially, a US Cup is 240ml (or 8.45 imperial fluid ounces.) This is slightly different from an Australian, Canadian and South African Cup which is 250ml. "
From the Doves Farm website, which also has a conversion table.

Likearollingphone · 13/11/2020 10:20

The bread recipes are the worst Angry

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/11/2020 10:25

I invested in some cup measuring cups. It's actually quicker than weighing, although I don't use them for marg/butter

BistroCafe · 13/11/2020 10:28

Yes to hating the insanely annoying recipes and also the rambling videos. The internet was supposed to save us time for things like that (so that we could then waste it on sites like MN and FB Smile). It's also the stupid super-hi-res photos of dewy piles of parsley etc that take forever to load and hang up the process of frantic hate-scrolling past all the guff.

MrsAvocet · 13/11/2020 10:30

Quite agree on the recipe front, but as others have said, presumably they rely on the adverts for revenue so it is understandable really. Still irritating though!
Regarding cups, you can buy sets of measuring cups quite cheaply, and if you use American recipes a lot it is probably worth getting some. As with kitchenware in general there's a huge range and you can get beautiful but expensive sets, or, like I did, a plain white plastic set off Ebay for a couple of quid.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 13/11/2020 10:39

I was watching a video about someone sanding and waxing a piece of furniture recently and she stopped halfway through to give the recipe for the fucking green smoothie she was drinking at the time!

I don’t give a toss if it increases your vitality and is easily made in your blender. I want to see what the pine table looks like after the wax is buffed. Get on with it.
