Yay! And with sweet potato!

MeetMeInMontauk · 13/11/2020 13:39

I voted yes, but I'm not proud of my choice Blush

Never

@elp30

I'm Texan and beans and minced beef have no place in "chile con carne", which to me, is sent to us in Texas from heaven.

However, I live with my English husband and he eats his "chilli" with mince and beans and because he's worth keeping despite that insanity, I'll tolerate it.

I'd rethink our relationship if he ever suggested BAKED beans. Y'all have already desecrated my beloved chile but baked beans makes y'all dirty bastards!

If there's no mince and no kidney beans in chilli con carne, then what IS in chilli con carne? I'm dumbfounded!
BiggerBoat1 · 13/11/2020 15:31

Absolutely not! And I love baked beans. Disgraceful even to suggest it!

Eh? Minced beef and kidney beans is chilli con carne. What else would it have in it?
BrightYellowDaffodil · 13/11/2020 15:34

YABU, but only because the only place beans belong is in the bin.

Anyway, they're all the same, aren't they? Hmm

HedgehogintheFog · 13/11/2020 15:40

Haven't voted because black beans are my beans of choice in chilli

If I was making chilli and I had some left over baked beans, I would probably bung them in, but as well as the black beans, not instead.

In fact, I did stick half a tin of leftover baked beans in my (wait for it...) vegetable lasagne the other week. I wasn't a huge fan (still ate it, obviously), but DP loved it.

What about when you think you've bought red kidney beans, but they turn out to be red kidney beans in chili sauce. Can you use them?

This is the recipe I use @CandyLeBonBon

Don't know if it's authentic but my son loves is.

elp30 · 13/11/2020 20:32

@BiggerBoat1

"Chile con carne" is made with diced beef, like chuck or rump. It also has a decent amount of dried chiles that are reconstituted and puréed; onions and garlic sautéed in bacon fat and added to the beef and is cooked for a few hours with beer and stock.

I'll let Texas Monthly let you know how it's really done!

Again, I'll say that I understand people in the UK call it "chilli con carne" and add crazy stuff like mushrooms and like the OP baked beans 😖 but it's so not right to me, at all!

I would use them, but I wouldn't accidentally buy them, they cost more than regular, and double the price of the budget ones I buy.
Itsnotagazebo · 13/11/2020 21:18

YAY

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 13/11/2020 21:38

No

Never heard of this

Kidney beans yes

Wisteria1979 · 13/11/2020 21:43

It’s not an either or! I make a big batch (20 portions) when I do make them and always use kidney, black and baked. If I have no baked then another white bean will do but you need something sweet to break the metal in the tins of tomato and the baked beans are an easy solution. Done 😁
