"A committee of MPs and peers has been set up to choose a gift "fit" for the Queen to mark the 70th anniversary of her accession, in 2022.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said it would be a "token of our respect". For her Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Queen had a stained-glass window created for her in Westminster Hall."

The Queen has everything she could possibly need, and the money to buy anything she could want.

This gift will be funded by donations from MPs - of course, it's up to them how they want to spend their money - but at a time when so many of her subjects are struggling financially due to the impact of Covid19, I think it would be appropriate for the Queen to ask the MPs to make a donation to a UK charity instead of spending the money on a Platinum Jubilee gift.

As a teacher, my salary is also funded by the tax payer. Would you like to decide who I give presents too as well, OP? Some of my friends have money for luxuries, so I guess I'm not allowed to give them anything this Christmas?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/11/2020 20:47

She isn't getting it though. And you aren't getting that she isn't getting it. It will be out there for anyone to see, to commemorate a historical moment.
It's not that difficult to comprehend.

WitchesSpelleas · 12/11/2020 20:48

Just as you are free to spend your own money on what you see fit, so are they.

I would be interested to know what my employer would say if I asked to form a committee of colleagues and called a series of meetings in work time for us all to make our Christmas lists.

I don't somehow think it would be 'what a good idea!'

The gift will be a tourist attraction and therefore create revenue, which ultimately is more useful than giving the money all in one go. Once the money is gone, it’s gone unlike a public commemorative gift.

Littleposh · 12/11/2020 20:48

It's the thought that counts . . .

VinylDetective · 12/11/2020 20:49

be given to a multi-millionaire who could well afford whatever it is for herself

You’ve been told countless times it’s a gift for the nation, not the Queen. Why aren’t you listening?

IcedPurple · 12/11/2020 20:49

I don't see why not wanting an official parliamentary gift to be given to a multi-millionaire who could well afford whatever it is for herself, while many of the citizens over whom she reigns are sinking into poverty, is Scrooge-like.

You've already been told that it's not a gift 'for herself'. It will likely be a public work of art which can be enjoyed by the whole nation.

I don't recall the character ever complaining about money spent by the government.

The money isn't being spent 'by the government'. It's being spent by MP's out of their own salaries.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

I don't have children at school, but if I did I wouldn't be very happy if you were taking time out of the classroom to plan and complete your personal Christmas shopping.

@OwlBeThere

‘A gift for the nation’ yes, I’m sure all those hungry kids will be thrilled with some fancy shite. Hmm

Oh, really? Do you have inside information on what the gift is? If so, I'm not sure why a parliamentary committee has been formed to decide on it - they can just contact you to find out!

If say, you were working in a school, and the gift was to commemorate the principal who had been in her post for 50 years and would take the form of a work of art to be displayed in the school, I'd say your employer wouldn't have a problem.
VinylDetective · 12/11/2020 20:51

You’re getting completely ridiculous now. I’m out too.

00100001 · 12/11/2020 20:53

Well, if we're going to target the wealthy for accepting "gifts" - then surely you are philanthropic in nature and give away every spare penny, and refuse gifts from others, because there's more deserving people...

WitchesSpelleas · 12/11/2020 20:54

I've never worked in a school, so I'll take your word for it.

It wouldn't go down very well where I work, even if it was a gift for the CEO. Sure, they'd say, club together for a gift, but do it in your own time.

@SentientAndCognisant hahahahaha get off your high horse! I'm no bloody royalist. Just saying that in the grand scheme of injustices this is pretty insignificant

frumpety · 12/11/2020 20:56

Could they not just give her the dosh, drop her off at Cheltenham next year and see if she can double it ?

I've already said, I am not talking about even the ordinarily wealthy, if there is such a thing.

I am talking about an individual who is one of the richest people in the world.

SentientAndCognisant · 12/11/2020 20:57

@whensmynexthol1day actually you didn’t mention any injustice you made a twee comment about the queen liking socks

StCharlotte · 12/11/2020 20:58

Well HM has had two London Underground lines named in her honour so perhaps they could have a new tramline for her at Beamish?

00100001 · 12/11/2020 20:59

and also throwing money at "poor people" won't solve the problems they face.... jsyk.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 12/11/2020 21:02

Tbh after all she’s had to endure the last couple of years with such an incompetent government I think the least they can do is buy her a gift for long —suffering— service.

Best make it a big bottle of gin.

Daisymaze · 12/11/2020 21:02

For fuck sake OP, the queen won't get to actually enjoy whatever it is, it will be something that takes on historical importance and delights tourists (many of whom want to go to London at least in part to see Buckingham palace etc), and I'm sure there will be a photo online for those who cannot go and see it in person. Although the queen is obviously an individual person, this country now and throughout history treats them as monarchs rather than individuals, it's not going to be Elizabeth's favorite gin, a photo frame with a photo of her and her favourite horse, or her favourite chocolate, it will be something put somewhere she hardly ever goes. What's the correlation between investing in something which ultimately creates more revenue than we put in, and children that are going hungry?

00100001 · 12/11/2020 21:02

but in comparison to the poorest people, you ARE extraordinarily wealthy.

Think of an 8yo living in a slum, sharing a room with 12 other familiy members, having to rummage through a rubbish pit finding things to sell on the streets. You're FABULOUSLY wealthy... so why aren't you refusing gifts and diverting your money to them? hmm??

If you want Queenie to step up, then step up yourself.
