To be shocked Ariana Grande is White

I’ve just discovered the new trend of ‘blackfishing’ whereby white celebrities and models try and appear racially ambiguous.

I think it’s more common in the states. However one of the most common examples is Ariana Grande who seems to have almost changed races.

See the picture in this article: medium.com/@abbs664/ariana-grande-blackfishing-d42a8cb726ea

Is anyone else kinda shocked that Grande is a white Italian.

I always assumed she was Latin American or mixed race black. It’s also quite problematic that she appears to tone down her look when it suits by appearing lighter on vogue.

She does look as if she could be from Latin America.
But as that is a huge area, with many different ethnicities who have significant levels of genetic input from Spain and in some countries Italy (as well as Asia and Africa) this is hardly surprising.

I agree. The "sexy yet innocent schoolgirl" shtick should really die a death.

I call it the sexy toddler act, it's rank!

peepercountry · 12/11/2020 22:52

I've just googled her to be sure , she is the tiniest thing with delicate features , I don't know how you can mix that with being black

🤦🏻‍♀️

Afromeg · 12/11/2020 22:54

Quite.

Don't forget the lollipop prop.

alibongo5 · 12/11/2020 22:59

@dayswithaY

Why does anyone have to officially declare their race? I've never spent any time pondering the DNA of a celebrity. It's odd that you are so shocked.
I agree. I often see links popping up on Facebook about "celebs you didn't know were black". I honestly don't care. (I didn't know Meghan Markle was black for instance). I think it's more of an American thing tbh.

‘Why does anyone have to officially declare their race? I've never spent any time pondering the DNA of a celebrity. It's odd that you are so shocked.’

I think they do have to declare their race on the American census.

And they do seem bothered about DNA. Jessica Alba did a DNA test and was shocked when it turned out she was basically European.

Skysblue · 12/11/2020 23:04

I think it’s kinda racist to say that ‘white’ skin must stay pure white at all times and if its allowed to tan to a dark tone then it’s ‘blackfishing’. ‘White’ skin goes pink, red, yellow, brown or dark brown depending where it is and what’s going on. Get over it.

Afromeg · 12/11/2020 23:08

I think it's because the entertainment industry is white-oriented that most people assume everyone is white unless they unambiguously present as not. Many didn't know Megan Markle and Mariah Carey are mixed. There's also an actor (I've forgotten his name now) who is mixed but 'looks white' and have always played as a white man in films. I know there are others, just can't think of them.

So it's a thing of interest.

Haven’t read the full thread, but have seen a discussion on this before and OP @IslandGyal I believe the photo used in the first article you posted is believe to be photoshopped/heavy lighting, which is easy to do- as you can see here in the attached picture.

Here’s another photo from the same event as the “darker” photo from the OP, you can see how it’s been edited the create the “darker” photo.

Whammyyammy · 12/11/2020 23:17

The use of the word 'white' to describe someone is racist and offensive

Orkneys · 12/11/2020 23:19

'I think it's because the entertainment industry is white-oriented'
Talented people always get a look in no matter what their colour. Grow up.

This thread tho Hmm people obviously have way too much time on their hands.

peepercountry · 12/11/2020 23:23

I thought it was the Vogue cover that caused lots of controversy. I mean she's not recognisable in it but that's a common thing with photoshop.

Afromeg · 12/11/2020 23:25

Huh? What's up your arse?

I was replying to someone who wondered why people find it interesting to know that someone is black and says it's an American thing. I also think so and added my tuppence worth of why I think so.

And Hollywood is more white-oriented. Not news.

If you were so busy and such an adult who has no time for such childish posts, why read and post here at this time of the night? Don't you have better things to do?

Afromeg · 12/11/2020 23:27

Talented people always get a look in no matter what their colour. Grow up

So the fact that it's more white oriented is simply because others are not talented? Says a lot about why that part of the post hit you so hard out of nowhere.

MustardMitt · 12/11/2020 23:30

I posted a link at least twice to pictures of people blackfishing. Those of you remaining on the subject of Ariana Grande or your own parents or colouring (how that’s relevant I don’t know) care to wade in with your opinion on these?

@MustardMitt it's just a tan 🙄

Afromeg · 12/11/2020 23:37

Oh no it's not. I've not said much about Ariana Grande because I still don't know ( I don't follow her music) but I've seen the one on the left before. That was my intro to blackfishing. That's no tan.

Afromeg · 12/11/2020 23:37

I mean not "just a tan".

peepercountry · 12/11/2020 23:38

I was being sarcastic & mimicking the other posters.

Afromeg · 12/11/2020 23:39

Oh sorry 😁

My point is that melanin can change, I don't know it's the case for her though but it is the case for my dad and my dna is mostly Great Britain areas with 2% Native American and that's it
Stripesnomore · 12/11/2020 23:44

Afromeg, were you thinking of Wentworth Miller?

Afromeg · 12/11/2020 23:47

Ooh I think so, Stripes. Now that you said it, it could be but then I keep thinking of someone else whose face isn't quite Wentworth Miller's. I could be mistaking him for someone else. Thanks.
