and if someone can see me typing to them if they don't have my number, but I have theirs ?

OP posts:
howtobe · 10/11/2020 22:55

Yeah probably if you’re in a chat with them or have messaged them already

Jalapinot · 10/11/2020 22:55

How would they be able to see you typing if they don't have your number? There's nothing to see?

Itsasecret85 · 10/11/2020 22:55

I'm not in a chat with them and have never messaged them before.

OP posts:
Doyoumind · 10/11/2020 22:56

Unless you are in a chat with them as in you've sent your first message then no.

Itsasecret85 · 10/11/2020 22:57

@Jalapinot - was wondering if my number would appear to them with the status 'typing

DressingGownofDoom · 10/11/2020 22:58

Place marking for the dramatic back story to this dilemma.

Jalapinot · 10/11/2020 22:58

I don't think so, until you hit send on that first message they won't know.

You could always type the message into the notes section of your phone abs copy it into WhatsApp when ready?

iHaveACold · 10/11/2020 22:59

No, in that instance they won't see.

I always type my messages on notepad then copy and paste them in after because I don't want people I'm chatting with to see how slow I am at typing.

Itsasecret85 · 10/11/2020 23:00

@DressingGownofDoom - I chuckled to myself when I read that !!! Of course there is one, but I can't put on here as potentially too outing

babblingbumblingbandofbaboons · 10/11/2020 23:02

No, when it comes to 1 to 1 messaging on WhatsApp until you start the ‘chat’ thread with them there is no where for them to see your number or the fact you are typing a message.

However, if you start a group chat (I.e you and two or more others) then all participants will get notified that you’ve added them to a group chat and be able to see your number and that you are typing a message.

So if you don’t want your number or that you’re typing to be visible till the first message is sent, send it to only one recipient at a time.

throwaway10000 · 10/11/2020 23:05

How do you know they don’t have your number

We need to know EVEN more now Grin

Itsasecret85 · 10/11/2020 23:08

@throwaway10000 - they don't have my number as I have never given it to them

OP posts:
throwaway10000 · 10/11/2020 23:08

The safest thing to do is block their number, they won’t be able to see if you’re online at all then.

I believe when you block someone, you can’t message them either, so absolutely no chance of them seeing “typing”

throwaway10000 · 10/11/2020 23:09

There’s other ways to get your number though

DressingGownofDoom · 10/11/2020 23:10

ColdNovemberNights · 10/11/2020 23:11

Why dont you just send them a normal text message.

Then nothing to ask :)

myhobbyisouting · 10/11/2020 23:13

Might as well jump in with a wild guess:

He's cheating and you're watching her WhatsApp to see if she's online at the same time he's messaging someone?

throwaway10000 · 10/11/2020 23:13

Oh I think I misunderstood. I thought you were trying to prevent them from WhatsApp stalking you.

RosieLemonadeAndSugar · 10/11/2020 23:14

Just placemarking for the backstory Wink

LouiseTrees · 10/11/2020 23:27

Yes, that's so obvious. There are approximately 65 million people in the U.K. and these random 17 people on this thread will know that it's you.

e1y1 · 10/11/2020 23:37

When there is a back story, you have to put it on MN.

It's the law 🤣

Nessashanessa · 10/11/2020 23:42

It's you isn't it? I know that it's you, I recognise you. Tell me, is his hobby dogging? It's either cycling or golf or dogging.
You've found a suspicious WhatsApp message haven't you? He's as guilty as hell. You must leave him immediately.

Cavagirl · 10/11/2020 23:42

Are you Boris trying to message Joe Biden?
