To think Sainsburys delivery guys should help me pack?

KatDubs261 · 09/11/2020 18:09

I am wondering what other peoples experiences are with their deliveries. Every time a guy brings my shopping, he plants it down and steps back for me to pack it all.

I dont get them often and order a big shop when I do so it is quite awkward him just standing here while I do it all. AIBU to think they could help?

Part of my issue is being late 20s I look young but actually have a chronic condition that really tired me out. They probably think 'oh she can do it herself' but tonight I am especially exhausted (they arrive in half an hour)

It says on their help page to leave bags or containers out if you can't do it yourself, and they will do it for you.

@PickAChew I had a Sainsbury’s delivery on Saturday and I paid the 40p to have it put in bags.

Snackasaurus · 09/11/2020 19:02

@jessstan1

Put a box or a couple of big bags for life on the step for the delivery person to put the goods in, then you just have to drag them indoors.
@jessstan1 the driver shouldn't have to though. They stand back to protect themselves. If the bags come from inside, it's still a Covid risk. The OP could just put the goods in herself :)

Sorry I am wrong. It was Tesco Blush

Just put a note that you are shielding
leave your bags outside

and the driver will put your delivery in the bags for you

Just make the note in your order so the delivery person is aware.

TheDowagerDuchess · 09/11/2020 19:06

Ocado and Morrison’s are delivering with bags as standard which you can then return.

ClaireP20 · 09/11/2020 19:08

Probably not during the pandemic, maybe they can't get too close. But usually though, I always ask them if they will take it through to kitchen on those crate things, then I tip (£2, I don't know what is the usual rate, but that sounds about right and I would never NOT tip). By the way, when I get a delivery for my mum, she is in her 80s, and I always ask if they can deliver in bags so it's easier for her to carry through. They usually don't deliver in bags now, but they do for my mum and never charge her (well, an 80 year old bending down and picking up for 20 minutes..) xx

Iceland deliver in bags and you can usually get next day delivery too

stovetopespresso · 09/11/2020 19:09

the other day I had a delivery from waitrose and he told me not to touch the boxes, when I looked at him totally confused then he said I could, but not put them on my table, only on my floor (!!?. really its filthy!) and please could I wipe them down afterwards Smile.

OhhCarolina · 09/11/2020 19:09

Yanbu. Bagless deliveries in a pandemic is stupid. There are lots of ways supermarkets could cut down on their plastic use, if they were really interested in doing so, without exacerbating their customers' disabilities.

dottiedodah · 09/11/2020 19:09

Maybe take all meat /frozen stuff and put away .Then have a bit of a break before cheese /butter/milk and so on down to biscuits /crisps /cereals (last 3 could easily wait until next day TBH!)

mushroom3 · 09/11/2020 19:10

Do you have a large bag such as an Ikea bag and they put your shopping in that just inside your doorway?

OhhCarolina · 09/11/2020 19:11

The OP could just put the goods in herself smile

She's said she can't though, due to her health condition.

Smile
Peppafrig · 09/11/2020 19:11

I didn’t realize the OP was shielding as someone mentioned above just let them know you are a vulnerable shielding customer . If your shielding though sainsburys will know that already as they got the list off the NHS to offer vulnerable people priority slots.

@KatDubs261

Thanks *@LooneyLovefood*. I am feeling especially bad today and I always feel under pressure to sort it asap Sad
But you feeling under pressure isn’t enough reason for them to break social distancing guidelines and put both you and themselves at risk.

Just take your time.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/11/2020 19:13

At one time they would always ask if I wanted help taking it through to the kitchen or packing it into my own bags to carry through, but now we are in lockdown they step back for safety's sake.

It's a great shame and very difficult for you if you have a medical condition, but I don't think they are being unreasonable at the moment.

Twigletfairy · 09/11/2020 19:14

Do they not make allowances for disabilities? Is there not a comment box that you can request extra help?

I appreciate they need to keep themselves safe, but I'm sure there's lots of people that need extra help in these situations. Especially when they may not have their usual support around right now

PinkFlamingo888 · 09/11/2020 19:14

I just carry the pallets through to the kitchen and unload it in there. Why do you need to put it in bags? They’ve always been happy to wait while I unload but I still try and be as quick as possible so they can get to their next delivery on time.

Ginfordinner · 09/11/2020 19:21

I do the same as you, but I think the OP is unable to do this.

Previous suggestions of putting a box out or changing to a supermarket who will deliver in bags sound like better options.

randomer · 09/11/2020 19:22

I wonder if anybody has gathered any data about a UK residents catching Covid from a Sainsburys carrier bag?

Ginfordinner · 09/11/2020 19:25

I think they discontinued using carrier bags for home deliveries for environmental reasons.

KatDubs261 · 09/11/2020 19:26

Hi everyone, the delivery is done now. I put out a box and asked him to pack some into it and said I would do the same with a bag. He looked a bit put out at first but did it.

Because I am young and because I look younger than I am people think I am joking when I tell them about my chronic condition. It happens time and again.

Anyway - all worked out for the best and I will keep Tesco in mind too if they do things differently.

Inkpaperstars · 09/11/2020 19:27

I would stick to places where you can get the order delivered ready bagged, then it will be much less work. I don't think the drivers can really help at the moment, even where they might have before.

If possible, at the time the order is arriving you could put up a small folding table outside your front door or some boxes, and ask in the delivery instructions online for them to leave the bags on the table/surface rather than the floor. That way you'll have a lot less bending and lifting.

Double check with the supermarkets who does bags, Waitrose and ocado do, and I think Tesco.

Inkpaperstars · 09/11/2020 19:28

Ps. You will probably have to select the option of bagged at checkout
