To think Sainsburys delivery guys should help me pack?

KatDubs261 · 09/11/2020 18:09

I am wondering what other peoples experiences are with their deliveries. Every time a guy brings my shopping, he plants it down and steps back for me to pack it all.

I dont get them often and order a big shop when I do so it is quite awkward him just standing here while I do it all. AIBU to think they could help?

Part of my issue is being late 20s I look young but actually have a chronic condition that really tired me out. They probably think 'oh she can do it herself' but tonight I am especially exhausted (they arrive in half an hour)

There is no option with Sainsburys to have delivery with bags now. But as I said above the driver can be asked to do the whole task if you put out boxes, laundry baskets etc.

coconutpie · 09/11/2020 18:19

@KatDubs261

Yes but previously they offered to help me.pack the bags. Not since covid
Errrr ... there's your answer ... they can't because of covid. It's for your safety and theirs. With some supermarkets, you can request it to be delivered in bags or liners. Then they can drop it at your doorstep and you can carry it in then rather than having to unpack.
AldiAisleofCrap · 09/11/2020 18:20

I do t think they are allowed. I asked Morrisons to put shopping on our empty sun room( open like a porch) I wasn’t in the room but they refused and put it all on the floor outside.

AldiAisleofCrap · 09/11/2020 18:21

*in empty sun room.

lemmywinks84 · 09/11/2020 18:21

They're not allowed due to covid.

Switch to Tesco, they're doing bag liners, so you can just lift them out of the box in one go.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/11/2020 18:22

It is not in the normal job description. I know Tesco use to unpack for their elderly or disabled customers pre covid.
I'd enquire if they had this service?
It is awkward. I usually do one week where I buy a months body and home cleaning products it is a workout emptying that one.
Would a friend arrange to help.
Large ikea bags are great for transferring.

RuthTopp · 09/11/2020 18:22

My neighbours are 60+ and are having deliveries. All drivers leave it in the delivery boxes and they have to unload themselves.
They got over the unloading / bending over by putting a wheelbarrow by the door and ask the driver to empty the order into that !

RaspberryCoulis · 09/11/2020 18:23

@KatDubs261

Yes but previously they offered to help me.pack the bags. Not since covid
And there's your answer. Not since Covid.

If they helped, or offered, there would be no end of threads from hysterical posters claiming that the Sainsbury's delivery bloke was blatantly flouting the roolz and obviously trying to infect as many people as possible.

BessieSurtees · 09/11/2020 18:24

Just go slow or ask him if you chuck some bags at him will he help? I always carry the crates one at a time into my kitchen and unpack in there. Not saying you could manage that but my point is that the driver has to wait. Only had a couple moan at me in twenty years.

Currently our drivers drop the shop, ring the bell and go back to the van until the crates are empty.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/11/2020 18:26

Ring customer services ask them to note the account.
The driver may think your chancing your arm. If it is noted I'm sure they'll transfer it to a box? Dragging a box will be tough try invest in a wheeled cart or trolley.

Carishina · 09/11/2020 18:27

My parents leave bags outside in the porch and the Sainsburys driver decants the shopping into them so I'm sure they would be happy to put the items in a box for you.

MrsSpringfield · 09/11/2020 18:29

Sorry you're not feeling great.
That must be tough.
Unfortunately no, they won't unpack for you. Especially not at the mo. Could anyone else help you? Friend / neighbour?

Redglitter · 09/11/2020 18:29

Yes but previously they offered to help me.pack the bags. Not since covid

So there's your answer. Deliveries like everything else are totally different now

Sceptre86 · 09/11/2020 18:31

You would need to ask and be prepared that they may so no. They are not obliged to do so as far as I know. I second having ikea bags by the door and asking if they can pop the shopping in them for you or a box?

EssentialHummus · 09/11/2020 18:31

Sainsbury's used to (until a few months ago) bring everything in zillions of bags. I don't know if it was different pre-Covid. They then recently changed to crates, which we need to empty ourselves - or that's how it is round my way, in any event. I'd ask them to put things into your boxes/crates/bags OP, and explain why. Worth also contacting HO to ask about this; in my experience they have been great at supporting vulnerable customers during Covid.

MrsSpringfield · 09/11/2020 18:31

Also. If you order iceland it already comes in bags and they pack them light.

Not ideal - but I ordered through them when heavily pregnant and they were fine.

DaddysGirlForLife · 09/11/2020 18:33

My asda delivery guy asked for one of my bags the other week and packed with me but at a distance (he was wearing a face mask) so no, you are not being unreasonable!

Happyheartlovelife · 09/11/2020 18:34

Sadly. It’s not in their job description. Some guys won’t mind. My front room is a storey above. One guy once brought it upstairs

However. We have a pandemic on top of it

But normally they aren’t even really allowed. It’s to do with insurances. Risk assessments etc. Bad backs.

HeronLanyon · 09/11/2020 18:34

Have Waitrose deliveries - no bags Was a bit of a nightmare as had two delivery guys and me all kind of panting over each other trying to lit stuff into my bags for life I’d brought to the doors. Mess on and a crushed yogurt didn’t help.
I now order it to be bagged and do my best to s’use the bags for rubbish/recycle them. Wish there were a better way of doing this but understand COVID has made it all less than optimal.

Barton10 · 09/11/2020 18:35

My husband used to be a Tesco driver they have strict timescales and are tracked. They are there to deliver food not unpack it or it would take twice as long to do deliveries

londongirl12 · 09/11/2020 18:36

@KatDubs261

Yes but previously they offered to help me.pack the bags. Not since covid
You've answered your own question Hmm
ekidmxcl · 09/11/2020 18:38

Put a note on the order saying that you need help. I don't know about Sainsbury's but Tesco will bring it into the kitchen if you are elderly, vulnerable, disabled. They did it yesterday for my FIL, in lockdown. Brought everything into his kitchen and sorted it out for him.

PlanBea · 09/11/2020 18:38

I don't get home deliveries so can't help there, but are you able to pull up a chair and at least you won't need to crouch down?

I pull up chairs for all kinds of housework (folding laundry, cooking, cleaning the bathroom, everything!) - I realised a while ago just because it's "normal" to stand/crouch doesn't mean you need to and it's honestly made my life much easier with my chronic condition!

SixesAndEights · 09/11/2020 18:39

Not being unreasonable at all. I got a Sainsbury's delivery a few weeks ago when I'd hurt my back and couldn't go out. I asked the man to unload it for me onto a table in my porch as I couldn't bend down. He was happy to do so.

Maybe you need to mention that you have a health issue and could they unpack for you.

Ohdoleavemealone · 09/11/2020 18:40

I have the opposite problem with Morrisons. They keep handing me bags or individual items. They should be social distancing so I tell them to leave it in the doorway and I will take it in myself.
