@terrywynne

Of course on the subject of lies v truth there is the very apt line by the late great Terry Pratchett:

A lie can run round the world before the truth has got its boots on.

Actually, the book that is from The Truth is pretty relevant to the current situation. Addresses different types of news reporting and the difference between the public interest, human interest, and what the public are interested in...

Sorry to be pedantic, and Terry Pratchett is indeed great, but it wasn't his original line. Comes from much further back - it's most often been attributed to Mark Twain, but the New York Times among others say even he was borrowing it from earlier uses: twitter.com/qikipedia/status/1174820464666894341?s=20

@Apileofballyhoo

Suggesting on MSNBC that Mitch McConnell is doing his Trump within his rights routine to fire up the base in Georgia in order to hang on to power in the Senate.
I fear that rational people are trying to apply logic to irrational people.
Yoffel · 10/11/2020 11:39

I’m not sure about the ‘they’re doing it to indulge him while he processes the kids so they can eventually wheel him off’.

Many thought he was being indulged when he ran in 2016 and look how that turned out

Yoffel · 10/11/2020 11:40

Sorry, processes the loss. Ruddy phone

JamieLeeCurtains · 10/11/2020 11:43

To be fair, it'd take me time to process Trump's kids, too.

Yoffel · 10/11/2020 11:49

:D

Can’t remember where I read it but it’s said that his kids know that their relate with him is conditional and transactional. Like his with his father. What an utter shitshow.

Yoffel · 10/11/2020 11:50

relationship

terrywynne · 10/11/2020 12:01

Fair enough! I mean it just shows that we are seeing another iteration of a problem that has been around for ever...

Most Brits would WEEP if they had to battle their way through a US Ballot form.

Very true. For this election so many things were confusing I realised that I needed to see a US ballot form to understand and when I had a look I found things like this.

"Ach stop with your logic Grin

Just like the Dems could rig the presidential election, but not the senate."

@StatisticallyChallenged - thanks for that, made me laugh aloud, much needed on this particularly miserable day.

Raising another glass (of her favourite apple cider) to GingerIvy, whose birthday it would have been today. A few days before it, this time last year, she had suddenly become ill Sad

Lweji · 10/11/2020 12:13

Could it be that the incumbent Geogian Senators want to challenge their own election so that it doesn't go to run-off?
They may be scared shitless.

One of them is an appointee who is being accused of insider trading. The other is just a fanny

yep - I've just looked at DPs, who faxed it from UK, and it's got 14 "people" votes, 12 yes/no "proposition" votes and 5 yes/no "measure" votes...!

Oh my, thanks for the remind, a chance to raise a glass tonight.

Roussette · 10/11/2020 12:53

Looks like melania is following her husband's lead, no plans to meet Dr Biden in the WH.
There is absolutely nothing that Jill Biden could learn from her. She has Michelle, Hillary... anyone but her, she did nothing, and reportedly spent a lot of her time with her parents.

"Dr Biden is focused on building her team and developing her priorities focused on education, military families and veterans, and cancer."

She intends to balance her duties as presidential spouse with her job as a teacher, a rare feat for a First Lady, the majority of whom have not held an outside job during their time in the White House

Anon778833 · 10/11/2020 12:57

Melania wants out of the marriage. She reportedly cried when he won the first time because it meant she'd be trapped for another 4 years.

I didn't realise about GingerIvy. Sad

When you didn't become Georgia's Governor and thus find yourself with some time on your hands to flip the state to Biden and lead to two run-off elections for the Senate.

gwenneh · 10/11/2020 13:01

@nauticant -- and that ballot form doesn't have the reverse side displayed, with referenda and paragraphs upon tiny paragraphs of explanation followed by a "yes" or "no".

Voting in the UK is so much simpler!

Only if the divorce settlement is enough to keep her in the manner to which she wishes to remain accustomed. She's not budging without the money.
ListeningQuietly · 10/11/2020 13:05

gewnneh
And do not forget the joy that is each candidate appearing up to three times under different party names.

The UK system has its faults
but the US one needs a TOTAL overhaul.

Biden needs to get a cross party agreement on floor standards that the federal government will accept state authorities working to.

Anon778833 · 10/11/2020 13:09

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom yeah, she apparently renegotiated her prenup before moving into the White House.
