I'm old enough to vaguely remember Jimmy Carter losing his second election and the incoming Ronald Reagan catching the break on the freeing of the Iran hostages.

Now here is the challenge for the Trump Administration....

The deal between the US and Pfizer for the vaccine was for it to be ready for December delivery.

Article from July:
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/22/pfizer-coronavirus-covid-vaccine-us-deal

The Trump administration will pay Pfizer nearly $2bn for a December delivery of 100m doses of a Covid-19 vaccine the pharmaceutical company is developing, the health and human services (HHS) secretary, Alex Azar, announced on Wednesday.

And this deal was part of the Operation Warp Speed plan to deliver 300,000 million dose of a vaccine before Jan 2021. (But the development of the vaccine was not part of Operation Warp Speed).

The agreement is part of Donald Trump’s Operation Warp Speed vaccine program, under which multiple Covid-19 vaccines are being developed simultaneously. The program aims to deliver 300m doses of a safe and effective Covid-19 vaccine by January 2021.

If Trump really wants to claim victory over covid, then he better get busy with this rather than focusing his attention on legal challenges (or should that be Jared who shouldn't be being distracted?)

JamieLeeCurtains · 09/11/2020 16:20

Trump eats his emotions, then defecates them out everywhere as he sees fit.

There isn't enough therapy in the world for his family. Maybe an Orient Express style ending might help them though, briefly.

RedToothBrush · 09/11/2020 16:21

Also, no money has yet changed hands....

Pfizer and BioNTech said the US will pay $1.95bn upon receipt of the first 100m doses it produces, following FDA authorization or approval. Americans would receive the vaccine free, the companies said.

And it will also be interesting to see if the vaccine is indeed free to Americans to access.

Won't it just, @RedToothBrush? And when.

Coquohvan · 09/11/2020 16:23

This paragraph stood out. I remember him from early on in the pandemic giving his concerns.

“Prominent doctors listed on the transition advisory board include Rick Bright, a former Trump administration official, who spoke out against the administration's approach to the pandemic after being fired.“

LarkDescending · 09/11/2020 16:23

Biden has committed to providing vaccines for free:

The advisory board will help shape my approach to managing the surge in reported infections; ensuring vaccines are safe, effective, and distributed efficiently, equitably, and free; and protecting at-risk populations.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/11/2020 16:27

Watching MSNBC, sounds as if the plans for a gaggle of 'recount rallies' is indeed being organized by the Trump Campaign with plans for the loser-in-chief, Scrotus, to appear.

Can't say it surprises me, but what on earth do they hope to accomplish? Recounts will happen where they are required or ordered by the courts, period. No state/county is going to do a recount just because some idiotic rally goers shouting slogans tells them to.

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/11/2020 16:31

@Apileofballyhoo

Find it hard to think of Trump as a victim when the reason people didn't tell him things is because they were afraid of him. I see his two sons as victims of an abusive father though. Suspect Ivanka is the golden child, as Trump himself was before her. Golden children are victims too though, and in that sense I do realise Trump was shaped by his upbringing. He certainly doesn't seem to be a happy person.
As the child of a narcissist (no, not diagnosed - you ever tried to get a narcissist to admit there's something wrong with them!) this was my thought, classic golden child/scapegoat dynamics at play with those three. Tiffany seems to be just plain ignored.

For that reason I have a bit of sympathy with them, as they are probably very messed up by him. It's hard to break away from a narc parent at the best of times, in some ways I think it must be even harder when they're wealthy and as a result have managed to tie your entire future to them (the kids all being part of the Trump business). They're so enmeshed.

The boys are desperately trying to get his approval by parroting his shit everywhere. Ivanka doesn't need to, not to the same extent. Obviously her political ambitions play a part too.

I don't know enough about Trump's father really - wasn't there an older brother who was supposed to take over the business but decided to do something else (priest perhaps?)

Nancydrawn · 09/11/2020 16:35

Ben Carson has covid. Was at election party where Mark Meadows ran about without a mask. As I do with everyone who gets this wretched disease, I am wishing him all the best.

nauticant · 09/11/2020 16:37

Can't say it surprises me, but what on earth do they hope to accomplish?

This is why I think it migh be worth the Democrats backing off a bit and letting Trump follow his instincts of how to handle things for the rest of the year. If the past few days are anything to go by Trump will discredit himself massively. Yes, it might cause harm to people in the US but a greater number of people despising him as dangerous but useless might be for the best in the long term.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/11/2020 16:39

DS1 just said it's to get Scrotus out of DC so the WH staff can quietly start cooperating with the Biden Transition Team. lol

I like that idea!
LarkDescending · 09/11/2020 16:48

@StatisticallyChallenged the older brother was Fred Jr (father of psychologist/author Mary) who made a break with the family "firm" to become a commercial airline pilot and was derided and rejected by their father as a result. Sadly he died of alcoholism aged 42, and his children were disinherited by the remaining Trump siblings.

lyralalala · 09/11/2020 16:51

or the vaccine will be free, but not the dr appointment...

And the cost of the syringe will be ££££

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/11/2020 16:52

Thanks @LarkDescending, I knew there was something similar. The echoes of that story will still be very fresh in family lore too; look what happens to people who leave us.

Blueberries0112 · 09/11/2020 16:59

I think Pharmaceutical would rather make money so waiting til Trump is out doesn't benefit them . They probably rely on capitalism to make extra $$$ like epipens. The only thing they would have an issue with trump is cutting back their research funding .

RedToothBrush · 09/11/2020 17:02

Biden is doing a live press conference on the vaccine and covid.

Made a point about the FREE vaccine. And to wear a mask no matter who you voted for. To save AMERICAN lives not democrat or republican lives. To save your neighbours or maybe those at your church. The point of a mask isn't to take something away from you its to give normal life back to everyone.

Excellent speech tbh...

JamieLeeCurtains · 09/11/2020 17:04

I have never, ever been so grateful for the NHS as when I was prescribed a couple of meds recently that would have cost me thousands of $$$ even if I were insured.

I really hope to god that free means free.

Biden pushing mask wearing. Good for him. A simple thing, and cheap.

How lovely to have someone talking sense again. What a contrast to the past 4 years of self-serving gobbledegook.
ginandtonicformeplease · 09/11/2020 17:10

@JamieLeeCurtains I looked up what my meds would cost in the US: $3500 per month, but the NHS provides them to me for free - chronic lifelong condition so I don't have to pay the prescription charge.

How anyone can say that the Affordable Care Act is bad is beyond me.

Catmaiden · 09/11/2020 17:14

I watched Biden just now from the UK, made me cry with relief, that USA has a grown up, decent human being soon to be in charge.

derxa · 09/11/2020 17:20

I finally feel like a weight has been lifted off the world's shoulders
