Thanks, @CaveMum. I'm going to have to buy it then, can't get All4 where I am Sad

lionheart · 07/11/2020 09:55

Okay, so the Biden/Trump gap in Georgia means there may be no need for a recount after all.

Good morning.

Do you guys follow Keith Olbermann? He's a veteran broadcaster, used to have the prime time slot on NBC. He did some great broadcasts called "The Resistance" during the first year of Trump (feels about 50 years ago), then disappeared. He's come back for the election cycle. He's great, angry and funny in equal measure. Linking to his latest, about potential crimes by Don Jr and Bannon wrt election intimidation.

boatyardblues · 07/11/2020 09:59

It makes me wonder if the reluctance to declare this election, when in normal times it would have all been done and dusted by now, is simply because of the knowledge that the result has to be completely unchallengeable legally so that Trump clearly has no leg to stand on?

I am pretty sure this is the case. I also wondered if all the results for the final 4 states might be announced close together so the results are a slamdunk & it closes off all the what-iffing alternative combinations. Finally, my inner tinfoil hatter wonders if they are securing all the breakables, metaphorically speaking, in case Trump goes on a rampage post-result.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/11/2020 10:00

Great news! I CAN get "The West Wing" on All4 where I live!
Oh, and that's good about Georgia, too, @lionheart Grin

Mrsmorton · 07/11/2020 10:06

@lionheart
Have you got the Georgia figures? Looks like 0.1% online, is that enough?

Yay! Get watching!
Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/11/2020 10:06

@BlueCatRedCat - I've been following Keith Olbermann on Twitter, but had not seen that video, thank you for the link.

www.nytimes.com/2020/11/02/opinion/west-wing-election-2020-politics.html

'It’s all delivered with the wit, humor and staccato pacing that we now think of as the calling card of the show’s creator, Aaron Sorkin — a style that has become a cultural shorthand for verbal virtuosity and moral righteousness. In a debate last week, Jon Ossoff, a Democratic Senate candidate in Georgia, eviscerated Republican Senator David Perdue with a brilliant elucidation of the senator’s failures. The commentator Joshua Holland called it “the most West Wing moment I’ve ever seen in real life.”'

Too early for a drink ?
😂
DollyMixtureLulus · 07/11/2020 10:08

Can I delurk and ask a silly question?

Is a concession from a candidate legally binding or just good sportsmanship?

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 07/11/2020 10:08

Thanks for the info on the WW. I might have to go take a look. And no, it’s not too early for a drink, @Pomegranatespompom; it’s 🥃o’clock somewhere in the world!

CNN said it's not required in law for him to concede
lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 07/11/2020 10:11

Sorry if I've missed it, we (me and OH) were chatting: is there any way Biden can get on with being the president/leader and dealing with all the issues? i.e. a way of stopping the shitshow that is to come/if T runs away...?

Just good sportsmanship, CNN said a concession is not legally required. He can sulk as much as he wants, it won't change the result.

There is NO WAY he will attend the inauguration

DollyMixtureLulus · 07/11/2020 10:13

Thank you ☺️

I followed Sacha Baron Cohen on Twitter and there's a 2 min clip of him outlining succinctly what has gone absolutely wrong in politics, and I see similar issues here in the UK/Europe:

Agree that they're all waiting til they've got every vote counted to take on Trump.

I "think" it goes to Pence if he runs away and the only way it can be stopped if he doesn't is the 25th amendment and I am not sure they'd have it in them to be honest 🤷🏻‍♀️ and again it would go to Pence.

I could well be wrong though Blush

BruceAndNosh · 07/11/2020 10:15

The inauguration will be taking place via a Zoom Webinar.
This means we can all attend wearing our pyjamas and beat Trump's viewing figures into the proverbial cocked hat

anon444877 · 07/11/2020 10:15

I love the west wing - dh can't watch it though, he says it's too optimistic.

I can't imagine a Supreme Court pick ever being non partisan - picking ACB was a vote winner for Trump, and now he's had 3 picks there will be some thirst to try and balance that.

As President Elect he won’t have any powers until he takes the Oath of Office in January.

He will, however, have a staffed office for transitional purposes in the meantime.

Roussette · 07/11/2020 10:17

@BlueCatRedCat

i always watched Keith Olbermann for the first year of Trump's presidency, and then he just disappeared!
I used to love his narration, I follow him on Twitter and he's come back in the last week or so, so pleased.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 07/11/2020 10:17

^ good sportsmanship, plus it enables unity and down plays division.

I expect the remaining states are checking and double checking given the legal accusations flying around and the febrile atmosphere. If I had gangs of armed thugs banging on the door being egged on by my country’s leader I’d be making damned sure I was completely correct legally too. Working with other parties in the same situation to deliver results en masse would also look like a sensible precaution.

BlueCatRedCat · 07/11/2020 10:17

Looking at the Scoobie Doo speech, and the President Show skit in the nursery, I was thinking this morning about all the great comedy that has come out during the Trump era. Laughter being the best medicine, and all that.

This is one for all the new CNN fans. Back at the beginning of the Trump administration, Kelly-Anne Conway was everywhere, pedalling her "alternative facts". CNN's Anderson Cooper had had enough of her, and was refusing to book her as a guest. This was around the time as the Stephen King's IT reboot. Saturday Night Live had some great Kelly- Anne skits, but this is my absolute favourite - Kate McKinnon is just astonishingly good:

I dunno

He might...

He might piss in the punch
