If you were given a shopping list with dairy milk on it what would you buy?

Would you buy the much needed treat your DW had looked forward to eating all day. Or would you, like my DH, buy 6 pints of milk assuming the "dairy" was to differentiate between different varieties of milk! First and last time DH is entrusted to do the weekly shop unsupervised!

madcatladyforever · 07/11/2020 10:10

I would have thought - chocolate. Who on earth writes dairy milk for milk?

ShivD · 07/11/2020 10:10

Mine would have called me about 5 times during the 10 minute shopping trip to ask me various questions!

This did make me chuckle OP! I’d be sad with cow milk instead of chocolate Grin

ShivD · 07/11/2020 10:11

Just to add, I drink oat milk so if I was differentiating between that and the bovine type I’d write-
Oat Milk
Cow milk
Almond Milk etc

Not dairy milk, surely everyone knows that’s the chocolate

pussycatinboots · 07/11/2020 10:14

Just checked this with DH...he'd get Cadburys Dairy Milk 😇 I have trained him well but then he's the one that eats is.
On my list it's always down as CDM, milk is just "milk"
I asked him about a couple of other "staples"...
Me "Which sausages would you buy?"
DH "Rothmans...or something like that...the fat ones"
Hmm😂
I may need to do some more Husband Whispering over the weekend.

MoonlightInVermont · 07/11/2020 10:14

Just confirmed with husband that (as I thought) he would have bought chocolate. As he wisely observed, “dairy milk” is no good for specifying which milk you want, as you might mean milk from a cow, sheep or goat. Surely anyone who wanted to make it plain what that they wanted milk from a car would write “cow’s milk”? Says husband.

Quaagars · 07/11/2020 10:15

@OddHoleySocks

Because they are used as an alternative to cows milk. In tea/coffee, in cereal, in batter mixes. I can't see many people putting orange juice in their tea 😂
Exactly Grin
MoonlightInVermont · 07/11/2020 10:16

Argh ... make it plain that they wanted milk from a cow

Car milk from a cow?
How does that work then Confused
Lol

Bubbletrouble43 · 07/11/2020 10:17

And this is why I do the shop. Twats.

MoonlightInVermont · 07/11/2020 10:18

Quaagars - yep, unfortunate typo, already corrected!

Bubbletrouble43 · 07/11/2020 10:19

I asked my ex to get Christmas crackers at the supermarket and he came back with a packet of Jacobs. True.

MrsSugar · 07/11/2020 10:29

I am clearly very untrusting as I would have written Dairy milk (choc not actual milk)
This comes from me asking for a milkshake but not getting one as apparently there were no milkshakes only flavoured milk Hmm

formerbabe · 07/11/2020 11:21

The fact that using cows milk in this way has happened for many years doesn't change the fact that it's quite an odd thing to normalise

Do you think the Maasai diet is odd? I can assure you eating local, available, food from animals is far more 'normal' than drinking 'milks' made from nuts in factories.

rocketspin · 07/11/2020 11:23

Something else, Dairy Milk is vile. I'd probably get a 100% dark chocolate bar like the one I bought a couple of weeks ago ready for when I --need- want some.

OddHoleySocks · 07/11/2020 11:26

I didn't comment on the Maasai diet. I made a comment about how cows milk is considered normal for a human diet and human milk isn't.

Interesting that you think plant milks, are odd, when they've been around for 600 years.

I don't think that plant milks are odd, I just don't think they're milk. Actually, it's not even a case of thinking its not milk....It's a fact. It's not milk. Unless the definition of milk has changed entirely to now encompass all whiteish liquids that can be added to hot drinks or cereal.
OddHoleySocks · 07/11/2020 11:57

And your are absolutely entitled to that opinion. You just seemed unclear as to why they had been called milk, and I hope I have helped clarify that for you.

IamnotaStepfordHousewife · 07/11/2020 12:28

My dh just said "chocolate obviously" 😂

Curlygirl06 · 07/11/2020 13:27

Just asked mine if I gave him a list with

Milk
Onions
Bread
Dairy milk
what would he get. He looked confused and asked what Dairy milk is. I explained it was chocolate, what would he do? He said "well, you'd write chocolate on the list wouldn't you?" Not good at hypothetical questions so I started again.

"If you saw Dairy milk on a list, what would you get?" He said he'd either ring me to ask or just not get anything, bloody rubbish! Mind you, I asked him to buy 2 lots of handwash, he got 2 bottles of hand sanitizer. When I asked why, he said it's the same stuff, isn't it? Good job he's a good cook!

pinkksugarmouse · 07/11/2020 13:40

I don't like this stereotypical "dozy DH can't trust him in a supermarket etc" attitude. If you want something specific make it clear on your list. How long does it take to write chocolate? Not long.
And how can anyone get so upset that the oat, nut and soya "milks" are referred to as milk. Chill, maybe in the fridge next to the oats, nut and soya milk. 😂

switswooo · 07/11/2020 13:53

From Wiki:

In English, the word "milk" has been used to refer to "milk-like plant juices" since 1200 AD

formerbabe · 07/11/2020 14:03

To be fair I say coconut milk without batting an eyelid.

kowari · 07/11/2020 14:11

I don't understand why you wouldn't just write 'choc'. A partner should know which kind you prefer.

NotBrigitteBardot · 07/11/2020 14:16

This made me lol. 100% Cadbury’s!

Justontherightsideofnormal · 07/11/2020 17:22

Chocolate all the way
