Adam Sandler films ....

Just watching another yawn fest from Mr Sandler, which Netflix seems to be chock full of. My OH likes the humour and it was his choice this evening.

Don't get me wrong, there's a couple of great films in his back catalogue, but it all seems so formulaic now. It's just a bit of fun for him and his mates really, isn't it?

He plays the same mildly offensive character in practically everything!

See also Ben stiller...

Amanduh · 05/11/2020 22:11

Yes but that’s the point.
I am obsessed with Just as we know it. Absolute tosh but I love it. Would still watch it over a Bond film x100!

MrsJunglelow · 05/11/2020 22:25

It’s the voice that gets me.
I am a huge advocate of free speech and think he should be able to do it but I am always surprised and disappointed that no one mentions that dreadful voice he does for so many characters, the Halloween film he did being the most recent example.
It always strikes me as very disablist.
The sexism aswell really grates on me.
I respect his right to do it but I do wish more people would kick up about it

DS now 16 absolutely loved grown ups and grown ups 2 from about age 11 12 and enjoyed seeing him laughing and watching them with him.

Completely agree re: Adam Sandler. I have no idea why Netflix gave him this huge multi-picture deal to make whatever he wanted (I guess because enough people like OP’s husband will watch it) when he so often plays a character as being mentally disabled and socially shunned for “laughs.” Can you imagine if he did that about some other characteristic? People would go crazy, but I guess it’s still okay to laugh at mental disabilities. I have a good sense of humor, but this is just one of those things I don’t find humourous, I suppose. Though apparently he did make two good (in comparison to everything else he’s made) things recently - Murder Mystery and Uncut Gems? I haven’t watched them yet, but they’re the first things he’s made that hasn’t been “rotten” according to reviews gathered on Rotten Tomatoes in something like 15+ years.

As for Ben Stiller... I don’t know. I really liked him in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Adam Sandler didn’t have a highly rated movie from 2009 all the way to 2017. Maybe longer. With Ben Stiller, about one out of every two of his movies in that period did all right with critics.

CherryValanc · 05/11/2020 22:41

Completely agree. The Hubie Halloween film is absolutely dreadful. As said above the voice he does for ( voice, he loves to make his character a "kind-heart simpleton", which seems to require that voice a jutted out jaw).

Another actor who I now can't even attempt a film with is Will Ferrell . Prattish man child is all he does. Usually extremely well off with a wife or girlfriend decades younger and far far above him in the attractive rate. I wonder if he's ever done a film where there isn't a close up of his face of him extreme crying?!

That's the one we've been watching tonight. 😴

That's a new one on me... I'm curious, is it different somehow?

Yeah i think he just has a call around his actor mates so he can do the stupid voice again. Always the same fucking voice.
Weirdly I do like his films, and always bet on if hes going to do "that" voice before watching one of his films

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 05/11/2020 22:50

Loved the Wedding Singer but most the other films he is in or produced are painful to watch

demelza82 · 05/11/2020 23:12

His films are generally pretty shit, lazy and indulgent but successful commercially.

That said his Netflix film from earlier this year 'Uncut Gems' is phenomenal and he's perfectly cast in it - then he ruins by giving the most childish, petulant acceptance speech when picking up his Best Actor award at the Independent Spirit Awards

My favourite too!

I like most of his movies. None of them are outstanding but they're easy to watch and are generally family friendly. Uncut Gems was surprisingly good. Jack & Jill is good for a laugh. Click is pretty good.

AuntieFesterAdams · 05/11/2020 23:37

Another one who finds his films painful- we switch off it it's one of his films.

I looked up why he was so popular- apparently his films appeal to a certain type of American male (the main audience) who like to know what they are getting in a film- slapstick and no plot to follow

squeekums · 05/11/2020 23:38

I like him, mindless comedy for a bit

Quaagars · 05/11/2020 23:55

Yes but that’s the point

Exactly, what he does innit
Kind of like Hugh Grant in his foppy hair simpery bollocks, that's what he does
then breaks out of that and becomes baddy in Paddington and you suddenly think hello lol
Sorry went off on a tangent there Grin

Notashandyta · 05/11/2020 23:55

Anyone seen punch drunk love? Beautiful film and shows he can do proper acting

MoonriseKingdom · 06/11/2020 00:50

Can’t stand most of his films but Uncut Gems was on of the best films of the past year. I am guessing the awful comedy keeps him wealthy.

Yellownotblue · 06/11/2020 01:08

What’s wrong with 50 first dates? I rewatched it with DCs last month and they both enjoyed it (as did I, it always chokes me up even though I usually hate romcoms).

The Meyerowitz stories is one of the best movies I watched last year. He was excellent in a comedy-dramatic register.

Yellownotblue · 06/11/2020 01:10

And yes to Uncut gems, very enjoyable with great acting.

Titsinknicks · 06/11/2020 01:40

But boy is he RICH.

Another vote for Uncut Gems

I like it too partly because I like drew barrimore though, I think that fits into the same era as wedding singer, little Nicky, water boy etc these are the type of films that were very popular and gave Him the reputation to get the Netflix deal (although he did already have the happy madison film company, so didn’t necessarily need Netflix) but which IMO he has (mostly) wasted the NF deal with lazy films relying on cheap laughs with simplistic uninteresting plots and one dimensional characters. There have been a couple of exceptions like uncut gems which wasn’t my personal cup of tea and the one he did most recently with Jeniffer Anniston.
Ginkypig · 06/11/2020 01:46

Yes sorry I forgot about Meyerowitz stories too.

DarkMutterings · 06/11/2020 01:46

Blended is the worst film I ever watched, I saw it on a plane and literally sat there Shock gobsmacked it was released and that Drew Barrymore put her name to it. It's full of racist and sexist cliches and just mind blowingly awful. Every time I see his name I just cringe at how bad it was

Dee03 · 06/11/2020 08:32

Sorry but Grown Up's 1 and 2 are a couple of my favourite movies ever! Seen them a dozen times and still just as funny.....sorry Confused
