The fireworks tonight

AIBU or are you probably just an anarchist or an arsehole to be setting off fireworks and firecrackers during a lockdown, when official displays are banned?

There's no excuse to be frightening animals either tonight. Don't be a dickhead.

I imagine all the pro fireworkers would be the first complaining if their neighbours had a rip roaring party that kept your kids awake and sent your pets batshit crazy. But why? They're only "having fun"

Entitled twats.

lovepickledlimes · 05/11/2020 21:43

@Viv0321 Apparently at least @PeonyandDahlia is

SocialBees · 05/11/2020 21:43

We bought a box of fireworks and set them off in our own garden. The kids loved it. And given that the normal local firework display has been cancelled, not to mention all the after school activities that normally keep them happy and active, I can't believe some people want to take this away from them too Angry

lovepickledlimes · 05/11/2020 21:45

@SocialBees this year fine. What about every other year

IHateWasps · 05/11/2020 21:49

Well I can't believe that people want to set off dangerous loud explosives in their gardens, that they have very little control over, traumatise many people and animals, often result in injury, leave litter behind and are bad for the environment but there we are.

EerieArmOff · 05/11/2020 21:51

@StormcloakNord It's a few fireworks, not ballistic missiles.

VelvetSpoon · 05/11/2020 21:52

Small amounts of fireworks that are quiet - most people wouldn't object to that. But hours and hours of endless loud bangs is just horrendous. A lot of these fireworks are almost certainly not meant for garden use, you can tell that by how big and loud they are. Not to mention the added issue of teenage kids obtaining them and throwing them round the streets like idiots.

VelvetSpoon · 05/11/2020 21:54

It's been all quiet here for the last 5-10 mins. Fireworks started a bit after 5. That's 4+ hours. I feel so sorry for anyone with pets locally, they must be in an awful state 😪.

QueenPaws · 05/11/2020 21:54

Like I posted before, once you've had one thrown in your house you get a bit scared
It's probably fine if you have considerate neighbours who are sober, and setting them off normally
Tonight there are teenagers running round nearby firing them at cars and windows. Doesn't matter if there's a person in the way or not, they knew there was a baby in the car when they threw one in there
I jump/get scared because I've seen the damage they can do, and because they're literally lit missiles around here, not set off for pretty lights

EerieArmOff · 05/11/2020 21:58

Might add that I live in a secluded area and by neighbours I mean the houses next to mine separated by our gardens/fields.
It's a country road, a good 5 minute walk to get to the next house.

Some of the accusations and names being thrown about on here over a few fireworks are absolutely vile; you're not better than the people you're berating for having a display for themselves.

Burnthurst187 · 05/11/2020 21:59

We've been in current house 9.5 years and this year the fireworks have been ten times more than ever before

I imagine it's due to organised displays being cancelled. Hopefully next year there'll be back on so it will be quieter

Onthelowdown · 05/11/2020 22:00

I don’t understand the interest in fireworks. Once you’ve seen them once there’s no originality and home displays are all a bit naff.

That said I don’t object to people setting them off if they genuinely enjoy them or perhaps for children who won’t have seen them or remember having seen them previously, but yes they should be restricted to the day or weekend and timing should be considerate

Macncheeseballs · 05/11/2020 22:03

Anxiousannie - your post is illogical, fireworks and all night parties are two different things Confused

lovepickledlimes · 05/11/2020 22:05

@Macncheeseballs not that much if you get them every 20 minutes for a full two weeks

SakiSiam · 05/11/2020 22:09

EatDessertFirst > 'My partner has combat PTSD and has had to medicate himself senseless every night this week'.

I'm with you on this. I've not been in your position, but ever since 9/11 (and ensuing war games) I've hated having to hear these loud bangs. I don't believe that we need to abolish Bonfire Night, but what's the problem with having fireworks without the extremely large [gunpowder] bangs?

I've owned dogs since 1998, all been terrified at this time of year, and we can't explain to animals that it's all normal, no problem (except it often is), but I really, really feel for those suffering from PTSD, as well as others who have sensory issues.

sqirrelfriends · 05/11/2020 22:09

I think they're fine if people are sensible, we had some quiet ones in out garden earlier and DS loved it.

Unfortunately not everyone is sensible. There have been kids messing around with them locally, setting them off in the early hours and in wooded areas. It's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 05/11/2020 22:10

I think there have been less fireworks around here, although there are still a few crackling away out there.

There is the usual fog of smoke & sulphur though.

Today’s my birthday - I think I’m lucky to have a birthday with a signature smell!

firedragon101 · 05/11/2020 22:11

Silent ones would be ace. But they are so loud now....why, just why?

Anxiousannie32 · 05/11/2020 22:13

@Macncheeseballs not that different really are they? Noise and disruption in residential areas. Lack of consideration for other people all in the name of fun. Hardly an illogical comparison.

My point is that people would complain about things that disturb them but don't tend to give two shites about things that distress or disturb others if they are enjoying themselves.

XiCi · 05/11/2020 22:21

Some of these posts are bonkers. A sadistic element? To watching a few fireworks in your garden. Jesus wept!

I think every house for miles around here has had fireworks in their gardens tonight. They're beautiful and fun to watch and it's a little bit of joy for families during what is a really shit time. It's one night of the year for a couple of hours FFS.

IHateWasps · 05/11/2020 22:22

It's one night of the year for a couple of hours FFS.

They go on for fucking weeks here, not hours.

XiCi · 05/11/2020 22:23

I asked quite nicely on my local community facebook group if there were any locals planning firework displays in their back gardens as i have a new hamster and want to know if tonight is a good night to introduce it to its playpen

Best post ever Grin Grin

Anxiousannie32 · 05/11/2020 22:24

@XiCi but it's not joyful for people with health issues, children who are frightened, dogs who are having fits. Why is it hard to understand that not everyone likes them? If you're going to be inconsiderate enough to make loud noises for a prolonged period of time in a residential area you can't be surprised that people might be annoyed by that.

And it clearly isn't just for one night for a couple of hours is it? I realise I can't stop people from cracking on with their fireworks but I don't have to enjoy it 🙄

Brainwave89 · 05/11/2020 22:31

It’s a once maybe twice a year thing. I do not think it is unreasonable to have fireworks tonight. I agree this may frighten pets but so does a lightning storm. Some tolerance here is required.

IHateWasps · 05/11/2020 22:32

I think there's a pretty obvious fucking difference between a storm and fireworks.
