The fireworks tonight

AIBU or are you probably just an anarchist or an arsehole to be setting off fireworks and firecrackers during a lockdown, when official displays are banned?

There's no excuse to be frightening animals either tonight. Don't be a dickhead.

Just bought some rockets to send up tonight in honour of all the miserable joykills in this thread

StormcloakNord · 06/11/2020 12:50

@LargeChungus careful not to blow your hand off. That would be a real shame...

Angel2702 · 06/11/2020 13:06

I don’t understand why everything else neighbours do to make life miserable is acceptable and you’re told to suck it up on here yet fireworks are seen so differently?

We spent the entire lockdown being made miserable by neighbours “doing what they like on their own property and not breaking the law”. Yet if I were to have some fireworks for the kids that would be unreasonable.

Most people do things that piss their neighbours off all year long so I don’t see the issue with fireworks.

If I have to put up with your dog barking all year, the smell of weed, blaring music, DIY, backyard bonfires, loud gatherings then I will also use my garden as I see fit.

Springersrock · 06/11/2020 13:24

Why are people ok with huge organised displays. Is it because they don’t have one of those near their house?

I’m ok with them as they’re well advertised and I know when they’re on so I can plan what I’m going to do with my horses and dog.

There’s a recreation ground just behind my house where they have a big display. It starts at 7, finished by 7:30. The fireworks are huge and loud, I know they’re coming, I can make plans and they’re done and dusted in 30 minutes.

This year people were having them in their gardens from 5pm to 10:30pm

The dog was terrified last year, but she was only a puppy. This year she was a lot better, but got a bit overwhelmed towards the end of five and a half hours of constant banging

One of the horses is fine, the other is not. Usually we would get to the yard at 5, bring her in with her buddy, give her her tea, make sure she’s got plenty of hay, put a radio in her stable and then around 6:15pm we sedate her. By the time the sedation starts to wear off, the fireworks display is over, it’s all very chill and calm.

This year. the people who live in the house at the end of the lane to our yard, had a massive firework party last weekend and didn’t warn us.

There’s been the odd few on and off all week, but then last night, people in nearby gardens having fireworks. Hours and hours of constant banging.

I can’t manage her when I don’t know what is happening, when. I knew last night would be bad, we got to the yard very early and did what we could for her, but I can’t sedate her for 6 hours. It’s frightening and heartbreaking to watch. When she’s in that state, there’s no getting through to her. She is a rescue who was horribly abused in her early life, she’s an absolute sweetheart but can be nervy and spooks at her own farts at the best of times.

Organised displays are well advertised. I know when they’re on so I can plan accordingly - and actually, it’s illegal to set fireworks off close to livestock and horses.

I'm sick of hearing about animals and fireworks. I'm pretty sure cats and dogs never used to drop dead in fear on bonfire night, is this a new thing? I won't be setting them off as my garden is surrounded by houses so I don't feel it's safe but I hope I see some in the sky from somewhere else.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 06/11/2020 14:23

And once again, posts about people being badly affected by endless fireworks in back gardens are completely ignored. People on here have made it clear they don't care about animals who are distressed by fireworks, I can only assume that you don't are about humans who are either. Or, maybe it's all my own fault I have a phobia? Or, maybe you all think I am an awful person who deserves to be terrified in my own home?
Anxiousannie32 · 06/11/2020 14:36

No point trying to reason with selfish idiots like @LargeChungus - they clearly believe their enjoyment trumps everything. Obviously some sparkly lights in the sky are the best type of entertainment their tiny brains can tolerate.

The thing is, most people don't begrudge them completely. They just want them to be used a bit more thoughtfully. People who take such glee in pissing off others and causing distress to animals are usually utterly selfish, very bored and quite thick.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 06/11/2020 14:47

Fireworks and how much they frighten pets piss me off but I accept it's each to their own.

What isn't acceptable, lockdown or not is the litter they leave behind. I went for a run this morning and stopped counting when I'd seen 80+ discarded holders (don't know the technical term). If everyone that let them off last night went out and spent half an hour litter picking used fireworks that would help massively. But they don't. Selfish knobbers.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 06/11/2020 18:18

Great, more fireworks here tonight. What was it people were saying about it only being one evening?

iliketobecosy · 06/11/2020 18:30

Same here, every night for 2 fucking weeks like how many fireworks do you need to see?! God it's making me so mad now, 1 night I can understand but 2 weeks my patience has evaporated. These people need to get grip and grow up.
HMSSophie · 06/11/2020 18:38

Fireworks all over the place here. Yes it really is about celebrating nov 5th - not. It's yet more consumerism and an excuse to drink.

Ginfordinner · 06/11/2020 18:41

Same here, every night for 2 fucking weeks

Why two weeks? Why are fireworks availabl for sale so far in advance of bonfire night?

I realise we are very lucky that fireworks happen a few days either side of bonfire night and at new year only. I feel for those of you with unhappy pets.

StormcloakNord · 06/11/2020 19:13

Yup more fireworks here! It's such a classless thing to do I'm honestly surprised so many people do it

catchabreak2020 · 06/11/2020 19:22

Fireworks have been going on for a couple hours here tonight now, I honestly can’t believe the absolute selfishness of some people. Like their kids enjoyment is above everything else, protection of wildlife as well as pets and humans with ptsd etc. Some of them are ridiculously loud as well, makes me anxious thinking about all the poor animals and people in distress right now.

StormcloakNord · 06/11/2020 19:25

I'd like to point out it's very telling that not one selfish twat person has included people/children with PTSD/disabilities in their diatribe about loving fireworks and looking forward to setting them off!

lovepickledlimes · 06/11/2020 20:35

Had another 5 here tonight. It would not be so bad if people only stuck to those dates

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 06/11/2020 20:38

Lovely drive home seeing the fireworks and now can see them from my window

Cat is watching them too

XiCi · 06/11/2020 21:32

Oh god, the horror, the horror. The children enjoyed a roman candle and a catherine wheel in the garden last night. Does that make me working class. I was struggling with the thought I may have ruined a hamsters first playpen outing and now this. Truly horrendous

MrsMomoa · 06/11/2020 22:15

Classless??

Here's a grip for you!
Enjoy Smile

Anxiousannie32 · 06/11/2020 23:07

They'll happily admit to distressing animals, children and PTDS sufferers but god forbid you should call them classless....!

P.s. you are classless.

XiCi · 06/11/2020 23:11

Yes Anxiousannie everyone here who had a half hour display in their garden with their children last night did it with the express wish of distressing animals, children and PTSD sufferers Hmm

Ps the class thing was an obvious joke

JammyGeorge · 06/11/2020 23:29

We are having some sparklers and fireworks in the garden tomorrow evening, we were working on Thursday so couldn't do it.

Something for the kids to look forward to, light the firepit, toast marshmallows and enjoy ourselves.

We do it every year. DS can't cope with the massive explosive organised displays. We buy the low noise ones that just give out a little puff when they go off, they are pretty pathetic but the kids love it.

I don't know if the quiet ones still disturb animals, I don't think you'd hear them from indoors - if you could they would be v faint.

I am a home displayer and I do agree that people setting off large loud explosive things that go on for ages are knobheads.

Bwlch · 06/11/2020 23:31

I thought classless was a good thing.

classless

adjective
(of a society) not divided into social classes.
"this is of course a classless society"

not showing obvious signs of belonging to a particular social class.
"his voice was classless"

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 07/11/2020 11:02

The garden fireworks when I was a kid were not the loud ones you hear today. There is a case for banning the sale of those big Chinese fireworks from sale to the general public. However, these are the very one used at organised displays so just as traumatic for those affected by noise.

I don't know what the answer is but a ban will never happen, it's too rooted in tradition and loved by many, and the organised displays will always be louder than garden ones.

We live in a noisy world, a helicopter just flew over and I couldn't hear the radio for about a minute. There is always noise, we have to adjust to it as best we can.

lovepickledlimes · 07/11/2020 11:10

@LastGoldenDaysOfSummer an organised display is heavily advertised, on for 20 minutes at the most and on for one night. That is a lot better then night after night for 2-3 weeks going off at random times between certain hours etc
