The fireworks tonight

AIBU or are you probably just an anarchist or an arsehole to be setting off fireworks and firecrackers during a lockdown, when official displays are banned?

There's no excuse to be frightening animals either tonight. Don't be a dickhead.

It isn't once or twice a year either. It goes on for weeks in many places.

BadlyDrawnSimpsonsCharacter · 05/11/2020 22:34

I don't mind at all the sensible people out there, who set off a display for an hour or so at 7pm, safely in the confines of their gardens.

It's the utter chav twats and there are many of them around where I live who think it's funny to let off an explosive at 1 in the morning because they have nothing better to do.

It's the braindead idiots who think it is hilarious to chuck fireworks through letterboxes.

It's the thugs who torture wildlife and domestic pets with lit fireworks.

It's THOSE people causing the issues, not the Johnson family down the round enjoying a small display in the safety of their garden.

XiCi · 05/11/2020 22:36

Why is it hard to understand that not everyone likes them?

Its not hard to understand at all. Is it hard for you to understand that some people do like them and that thousands upon thousands of families have had a lovely time tonight? We dont all enjoy the same things. There are things in this world that affect health problems that I have or that cause me anxiety but that's something I have to deal with. I dont expect these things to stop just for me.

@XiCi it's not about stopping it, it's about doing it considerately not for hours on end for the weeks leading up to bonfire night. Not difficult is it.

BadlyDrawnSimpsonsCharacter · 05/11/2020 22:45

@strawberrypancakes lucky you, only having to deal with the noise for ten minutes. Trust me, you would be feeling very very different if you lived in an area like mine, and some other PPs on here.

AlwaysLatte · 05/11/2020 22:47

But what are people buying them for tonight? Public displays aren't happening and it's illegal to let fireworks off in the street or in a public place.
They can be set off only on private land with the landowner's permission. Given the ban on household mixing, not many are going to be buying them for that purpose.

We don't normally buy them for household mixing purposes, just a family thing. More so this year!

AlwaysLatte · 05/11/2020 22:48

(I mean for people in general - this year we didn't as the place we normally get them from wasn't stocking them this year),

AlwaysLatte · 05/11/2020 22:51

I imagine all the pro fireworkers would be the first complaining if their neighbours had a rip roaring party that kept your kids awake and sent your pets batshit crazy. But why? They're only "having fun"
I haven't come across anyone having a 20 minute party but it's a really great idea.

annabel85 · 05/11/2020 22:52

@QueenPaws

Like I posted before, once you've had one thrown in your house you get a bit scared It's probably fine if you have considerate neighbours who are sober, and setting them off normally Tonight there are teenagers running round nearby firing them at cars and windows. Doesn't matter if there's a person in the way or not, they knew there was a baby in the car when they threw one in there I jump/get scared because I've seen the damage they can do, and because they're literally lit missiles around here, not set off for pretty lights
It's terrorism.. Where are the parents of these kids?

A sadistic element? To watching a few fireworks in your garden. Jesus wept!

I'm talking about the people letting them off in streets, who get a kick out of frightening people. That is sadistic.

I asked quite nicely on my local community facebook group if there were any locals planning firework displays in their back gardens as i have a new hamster and want to know if tonight is a good night to introduce it to the playpen.

Grin

Seriously though, people who set off fireworks in back gardens are a total PITA. They should be banned!

Dongdingdong · 05/11/2020 23:03

It was about ten minutes in our area and nothing since.

Typical selfish, I’m alright Jack attitude. In my area they’ve been going off all night and I can still hear them now (it’s 11pm). I actually think it’s worse this year because there aren’t any big displays - so more people are setting them off in their gardens. Twats.

Dongdingdong · 05/11/2020 23:06

I can't believe some people want to take this away from them too

@SocialBees Oh FFS. I’m sure the poor little mites will survive Hmm.

Bwlch · 05/11/2020 23:19

They go on for fucking weeks here, not hours.

I think I must live in a very civilised part of the world. A distant neighbour sent up a very impressive display earlier on that wouldn't have been out of place at an organised display, if a little truncated, but that was it.

TigerBrite · 05/11/2020 23:20

I can't believe some people want to take this away from them too
When I was a kid we never had money for fireworks. In fact we never had lots of stuff - ice creams, holidays, fizzy pop, various other luxuries - and we survived. Just another example of privileged people thinking we MUST have xyz or we’ll just die!!!

Anxiousannie32 · 05/11/2020 23:24

@AlwaysLatte one last time....fireworks don't go on for just 20 minutes. There have been hours of them every night for the past week. Tonight they've been going on since 4:30pm.

People are inconsiderate arseholes and would soon be complaining if something disadvantaged them in this way for this length of time.

Faynite · 05/11/2020 23:38

My 7 year old spent months this year without seeing another child.
His birthday party has just been cancelled.

Our Summer holiday was cancelled.
Halloween was cancelled.
He can’t see his grandparents or play with his friends.

But he can have fireworks. So I bought low noise fireworks to cheer him up. It was worth it to see him smiling and excited.

It’s one night a year FFS!

CoronaIsShit · 06/11/2020 00:07

We did fireworks in our garden for the first time ever this year, along with a ‘bonfire’ in the BBQ for roasting marshmallows! Lots in our neighbourhood did too from the sounds of it. Usual killjoys on the community Facebook page bitching about it but meh, our council organised display was cancelled which you can hear all over town so I don’t see an issue if people do their own little display safely on their own property. Not heard any thing before 9pm.

If people chose to keep pets, it’s their responsibility to limit their distress, no one else’s. It’s hardly like firework night is a new thingHmm. It’s the same day every year. I suppose it would be difficult to limit sales to only on the day or day before because there are other celebrations at which they are used.

Our cat was still happily snoozing in her bed when we came back in. Youngest DC very happy as it’s his favourite time of year with Halloween and I’m happy that we made him happy.

Regarding PTSD, it’s not like a car backfiring in the street suddenly catching you unawares. It’s a given that you’re going to hear fireworks at this time of year and steps should be taken to mitigate it. I suffer from PTSD and wouldn’t expect a still legal activity to be curtailed just to suit me.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 06/11/2020 00:09

Someone has just started setting them off...earlier ones fine...midnight.. why?!

TibetanTerrier · 06/11/2020 00:59

Do you seriously not understand that PTSD has many different causes and that to military personnel fireworks sound like gunshots and bombardment? And do you seriously not understand the devastating effect this will have on someone who has PTSD from being in battle?

lovepickledlimes · 06/11/2020 02:23

@CoronaIsShit the problem is not one family setting off fireworks but multiple families over a 3 week period feeling the right to have a firework display in their own garden meaning you end up dealing with multiple fireworks for 21 nights sometimes going off every 20 minutes

Kids have to have it all don't you know. Oh and free meals provided out of term time as well don't forget as all these things cost money.

Soooo now you’re complaining about financially struggling families being helped during school holidays?

Dipped in and out of this thread... police are pointless, people letting off fireworks are sociopaths, families shouldn’t get fed.. And that’s just from what I read.

What a lovely unbitter person you are.

XiCi · 06/11/2020 06:58

Oh the irony of you starting a post calling people 'arseholes' and 'dickheads'. Words fail me. Yes we should just let all those nasty little working class kids starve shouldnt we OP. Maybe just round up everyone on benefits and shoot them because 'dont forget these things cost money'. Arsehole indeed!
