I think either way there will be unrest.

I so long for a dose of consensus politics, on both sides of the pond.

ChickOnAStick · 04/11/2020 09:35

@LarkDescending

Wisconsin looks likely to have a result sooner rather than later.
For Wisoncon, there is only 30,000 in it now! This is agony
PathThreeTwoOne · 04/11/2020 09:37

@Roussette

One racist comment? Really? Honestly, inform yourself better.

Lifeisabeach09 · 04/11/2020 09:37

but fail to see his attraction for people who are not white.

Because African Americans and American Latinos aren't two big homogeneous unit.
Trump's rhetoric of making 'America great again' and bringing back jobs appeals to all ethnic groups, IMO. Also, a lot of Americans are right-wing regardless of colour. I know a few mixed-ethnicity and Black Americans who vote Republican because of taxes--they feel they will keep more of their income under a Republican govt as opposed to the Democrats.
Taxes, guns, jobs, military-transcend the colour divide.

Also, another factor. Biden is old-there is always the possibility he'll die in office so American's look at who the VP is. America is not ready for a woman (of colour) to be president.

*please excuse the typos.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/11/2020 09:39

The tension is unbearable. I have no idea why I am so invested in an election which is taking place very far from my quiet little corner of Scotland, but I am.

AcornAutumn · 04/11/2020 09:39

@Roussette

Acorn that was the stupidest thing Biden has said beyond doubt. I imagine he regrets it immensely.

But
it was one horrendous faux pas on the part of Biden. What about the thousands of wrong things Trump says .... because Trump is Trump we seem to indulge him, we let him off, the lows get lower etc

If Biden had said that and it was isolated, and various other horrible “white privilege” things weren’t going on...it would feel like a sucker punch but I’d accept it as an oddity.

But like Trump, there’s a whole bunch of shit going on there.

What a choice! I think there’ll be riots whoever wins.

NewMum0305 · 04/11/2020 09:40

Biden now ahead in Wisconsin by 20k. I can’t!!

the80sweregreat · 04/11/2020 09:42

If Biden wins Wisconsin is this a change or how they voted before?

baroqueandblue · 04/11/2020 09:42

Sadly, when you have to use Trump as a measuring stick, you're in trouble. Biden's comment reveals structural racism and people can smell it.

theDudesmummy · 04/11/2020 09:44

Has anyone noticed that the Guardian live blog has different figures from the BBC and other news outlets? What is going on?

ChickOnAStick · 04/11/2020 09:46

@the80sweregreat

If Biden wins Wisconsin is this a change or how they voted before?
Yes. Biden needs WI and MI though....
BiBabbles · 04/11/2020 09:47

It'll be a flip from 2016, though they went blue in the several elections before that.

NewMum0305 · 04/11/2020 09:47

@the80sweregreat

If Biden wins Wisconsin is this a change or how they voted before?
They voted Democrats 1988-2012, then Trump (by a v small margin) in 2016

The Guardian website is really good for a quick summary of how the swing states previously voted.

anon444877 · 04/11/2020 09:48

Argh - I can't believe Trump is still in the game!

NewMum0305 · 04/11/2020 09:48

Or Pennsylvania?

newlabelwriter · 04/11/2020 09:50

Accoording to Twitter Biden is ahead in Wisconsin. My nerves are shot.

theDudesmummy · 04/11/2020 09:50

I have always relied on the Guardian for real facts...but they would appear to be making a huge error right now? Unless the BBC, AP, RTE etc are all wrong?

PullTheBricksDown · 04/11/2020 09:53

Biden ahead in Wisconsin according to CNN but lead down to 10K. Waiting on Milwaukee results I think. Crossing everything here.

PullTheBricksDown · 04/11/2020 09:55

CNN have 224-213 to Biden while the Guardian has 238-213. Right to be cautious I think. Their data guy is incredible.

CoffeeandCroissant · 04/11/2020 09:56

Biden now in front by 0.44% in Wisconsin,
with >99% reporting. If he wins, he's on 248 EV. MI+PA or MI+NV or GA+anything would make him president.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 04/11/2020 09:56

Thanks for that explanation, @Lifeisabeach09. For myself, I can't see past Trump's appalling behaviour since he won in 2016, but your explanation, along with the anti-abortion aspect, has made me understand why people have voted the way they have this time round, a lot better.

anon444877 · 04/11/2020 09:56

It looks like Biden can do it - the votes to be counted are from big democrat voting cities.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 04/11/2020 09:56

I woke up this morning feeling sick with nerves. I've said for months I think Trump could get back in but I really thought his handling of Covid would have swung it in Biden's direction. It's awful being so close. I'm hoping the Guardian's feed is correct.

BruceAndNosh · 04/11/2020 09:58

The % of votes received by the independent candidate is more than the margin between Biden and Trump in several states
