I do get you, @AcrossthePond55. I suppose the big issue here is that Trump can stand again in 2024 - and so could any of his adult children with or without Trump on the ticket, either as GOP or Independent. It's like slaying a vampires' nest.

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2020 00:03

I must admit DH is starting to get a little twitchy about whether Biden has called it too early... hes getting more and more nervous.

I think we will probably call it a night now as we don't think that we will be much closer to a result tonight tbh.

SophieB100 · 05/11/2020 00:03

Just now - Guardian live feed:

Joe Biden is just six electoral votes away from becoming the next president of the United States. With his wins in the pivotal swing states of Michigan and Wisconsin, Biden has secured 264 electoral votes to Donald Trump’s 214 votes. The Democratic nominee needs to win just one more state to capture the White House.

How can some of you sleep when we are this close? Grin

PerkingFaintly · 05/11/2020 00:05

Bedtime here, too.

As we said right at the beginning of these threads, it's not a sprint, it's a marathon. So here's wishing everyone as good a night's sleep as we can get, in our different time zones.

To tomorrow, and whatever it brings.

Election Part 2 (Trump thread #108)
RedToothBrush · 05/11/2020 00:10

As President Trump's lead in Georgia narrows, CNN's John King said Wednesday that "there are enough outstanding votes for Joe Biden to make it up."

"Joe Biden needs about two-thirds of the remaining votes," King said during CNN's special election coverage. "And again, if you look at the statewide numbers you think, okay, there’s no way he’s going to get two-thirds of the remaining vote. But then you think where are they? We know there are still some more."

CNN's David Chalian reported a "rough estimate" of 185,000 unaccounted votes in Georgia.

"Joe Biden would need between 65% and 67% of that 185,000 uncounted votes in order to overtake Donald Trump and actually flip the state of Georgia," Chalian said.

DH is currently tracking Biden's share of votes currently coming in as 65.3%... Fag paper stuff.

Apileofballyhoo · 05/11/2020 00:10

If you lot all think it's safe to sleep, I'll go to bed too. Still very nervous.

PerkingFaintly · 05/11/2020 00:13

Still nervous here, too, Apile. But whatever it is, I'll face it better on a night's rest.

Flowers for us all.

Very good point @JamieLeeCurtains And you're right, 'an ounce of prevention prevents a pound of cure'.
RedToothBrush · 05/11/2020 00:21

Being reported that Trump now is trying to stop counting in Fulton county Atlanta, Georgia. Its a huge blue area.

In response Georgia are planning to keep counting as long as it takes and 'will run until midnight' if they have to.

This should give you a rough idea of when this is likely to be.

CherryValanc · 05/11/2020 00:23

I'm becoming increasingly obsessed with why masks in the USA all seem to be huge, causing people to have to pull them back up their noses every 30 seconds.

I think my obsessiveness might be a sign I am lacking sleep, I may need to give in and go to bed!

That's 5am for us isn't it? (admittedly that depends on where you are reading this from!!!)

It's just gone 4:30 pm where I am. Another six hours until bedtime!Smile

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/11/2020 00:57

@SophieB100

Biden has shown a level of class and diplomacy that Trump can only aspire to.
The problem being that Trump does not now, never has and never will, aspire to such levels. He wants to sow dissent and division and foment unrest in the country, and a horrifying number of people have voted to do it his way.
tobee · 05/11/2020 01:00

True ! ⬆️

Furries · 05/11/2020 01:34

I’ve lurked on and off these threads, only posted a couple of comments today.

I’m not going to lie, my political knowledge isn’t great. But I’d like to thank everyone who has been posting. So many posts have tied together to make the process a bit easier to understand.

But, for me, the most refreshing thing has been the sense of “calm”. Don’t get me wrong, it’s obviously nail-biting, but it all seems to have been handled/posted without vitriol.

Questions have been asked multiple times “but how can xxx vote for Trump when he does yyy” and posters have taken the time to explain why, even though some might think it seems bonkers, to those living in the USA it is the right vote for them. And I appreciate that insight.

These threads have been very interesting to read - and I find it even more interesting how they’ve been conducted compared to how some threads go with regards to UK politics, but guess that’s a whole other thread to start (or not!)

I hope that those that need to finally grab some decent sleep and that the night owls continue to update!

Everybodyfednobodydead · 05/11/2020 01:52

(Nervously waves) hi everyone. I've lurked for a while and all day today. I've been watching as much of the election as I can and feel because of this thread I've a much better understanding of politics. I am anti trump but I guess personally not politically until recently. I am ashamed to admit especially as a nhs nurse I don't have much political knowledge. I know enough to make my mind up but not enough.
I think this may have been asked and it kind of goes for America and the UK. I want Biden to win as I feel for me, republicans are kind of the same as our tory government. And I've warmed to Biden. In a grandpa kind of way. But could someone explain why there never seems to be younger candidates. I'm mid 30s but just feel maybe an injection of newness and youth would be refreshing. After researching what I could I feel this should've been a landslide but I've read a lot about Biden's ages and capacity etc.
I'm sorry it's long and possibly a stupid comment but is there a reason for it. I appreciate experience but surely there's stronger younger candidates. Especially having to go against trump. Thank you for reading all this 😂

borntobequiet · 05/11/2020 03:03

I’ve posted this a few times on various threads and no one has contradicted me yet - but I think that because Trump destroys everything around him and is so toxic, it would be too dangerous for a younger candidate to stand against him, and the better the candidate, the more dangerous it would be. The personal invective and smears would damage them because mud sticks, however unwarranted. He even turns people’s virtues against them. He has no concept of the goodness or ability of others, because he has little or none himself. He sees everything through the distorting lens of his own hatred and avarice.
Biden could take the risk because his very distinguished career was to all intents and purposes over, plus as an old man he shows up Trump in strong direct contrast (his most recent speech a good example of that).
The pair of them are like a couple of 1960s B-movie mechanical dinosaurs wrestling in the swamp (see what I did there?), obv Trump is T-Rex with his tiny hands (excuse me, I’m sleep deprived atm).

Everybodyfednobodydead · 05/11/2020 03:26

@borntobequiet haha I like your analogy and thank you for replying. That does make sense. The party has to put who think they would stand a chance. I do hope going forward we see more diverse members at the forefront

maggiethecat · 05/11/2020 04:35

I should sleep but it's not happening, insomnia is useful at times
maggiethecat · 05/11/2020 04:58

funny, went to bed at 12.30 nice and calm but now my heart's racing. even if I went back to bed I don't think I'd manage sleep
