I have lurked for long enough to know that anything pro-Trump/anti-Biden will get me sworn at and called god knows what

I've been on these threads since day one, and I've never ever seen anyone sworn at or called 'god knows what'.

Biden could cause UK (Even More) problems on Brexit regarding anything Ireland related. Half his family is from there.
We’ve got nothing to lecture the US about having voted to impoverish ourselves via Brexit.

Yorkshiremummyof1 · 04/11/2020 12:04

@CorianderBlues

Brits should be more concerned about Biden. He has clearly stated he will only deal with the UK if we remove the Socialist NHS and move away from universal healthcare.

I have lurked for long enough to know that anything pro-Trump/anti-Biden will get me sworn at and called god knows what, but as a tax-paying, NHS-loving Brit who has had both elderley parents saved by the NHS in the last year, the thought of Biden getting in concerns me more than Trump.

Trump has affected us over here very very little over the last 4 years - simply, he doesn't care about the UK, he is more interested in domestic policy, and performing on the "untouchable" international issues, like Mexico, the Middle East, and North Korea.

Okay so I am not pro-trump or pro-biden and I do think in similar ways to you.

I don't like trump, I think he is a tw*t however I also think he leaves us fairly well alone. I am concerned about food standards as I've already said.

Biden however, he doesn't like the NHS and I don't think he would necessarily leave us to it. I'm just not sure. However, if Biden has to get in for Trump to get out then...?

On the other hand, I also worry if Biden gets in, then he will dodder away and it will be SUCH a disaster that the whole country turns red and we'll get someone worse that Trump. Someone intelligent basically......

frumpety · 04/11/2020 12:06

@TokyoSushi thanks for that explanation,. I think some of the other smaller states should follow suit, make the candidates really work for it.

SabrinaThwaite · 04/11/2020 12:07

Both Trump and Biden would want access to the UK healthcare markets as part of a trade agreement.

But hey, Brexit, the gift that keeps on giving.

At least Biden wants to protect the GFA.

Roussette · 04/11/2020 12:07

I think Biden will have a good team behind him bringing stability.

Unlike Trump. Who is left to work in the Administration revolving door? ... over 400 left and many of those key positions.

Interesting article about Melania recently in Tatler. I think it's the wake of tapes released last month by a former friend of hers. Definitely looks as if she knows what she's doing and isn't necessarily that unhappy with her current lot.

Absolutely, he won't let the Tories trample over the Good Friday Agreement, which is fantastic.

Sorry YorkshireMummyof1, I should have said, I think Trump is an utter, utter moron and I laugh like a donkey when I think Americans actually voted him in! It's a shitshow all round.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 04/11/2020 12:14

Coriander do you have a source for your Biden NHS claim?

Cam77 · 04/11/2020 12:14

Biden is now 1/3 to win it with the bookies. He was about 5/1 at points during the night. The worm has very much turned.

Cam77 · 04/11/2020 12:16

More than anything else, I’m Biden look a like winning it as the world can’t afford another 4 years of a climate change denier in the WH.

tobee · 04/11/2020 12:18

@Completmentfille

I expect Trump knows that he is totally unsuited to the role and would far rather be cavorting with models on luxury yachts

I don't believe that at all. He's a narcissist and gets off on the power.

I also don't think he thinks he's unsuited. He thinks he's too good for the role. He perceives the US as being lucky to have him. He's disappointed he hasn't got more out of it on a financial level. And delaying personal prosecution.

CorianderBlues · 04/11/2020 12:19

@HoneysuckIejasmine

Coriander do you have a source for your Biden NHS claim?
There are loads. Google "Joe Biden NHS" and you'll find sources from the Indy to the Telegraph to the Mirror, all factions of the press have covered it. I don't want to give specific sources for fear of being told I'm supporting one side or the other through biased reporting.

Please don't take my post as pro-Trump, just anti-Biden, where the NHS is concerned - and I think you, I, all Brits should have more of a worry about something so VERY British and something that is the pride of the nation, and NOTHING to do with the US!

HoldingTight · 04/11/2020 12:20

Where are you finding these odds? Everywhere I look Trump is ahead.

Yohoheaveho · 04/11/2020 12:22

I agree that Trump is a moron but he's very talented at manipulating people, some sort of idiot savant maybe?

PerkingFaintly · 04/11/2020 12:27

Yeah, sorry, anyone hoping any kind of American president will somehow "be nice" to the NHS is dreaming.

US trade teams will have been salivating over Brexit since before the Referendum even happened.

We know US insurance companies were because they published about it, and there were conferences about the NHS as an "opportunity for profit".

Various UK governments have been restructuring the NHS to make it easy to take over slice by slice (that's what the CCGs are for) since long before the Referendum. Brexit has added another layer of shit to that: we're desperate for trade deals and every country worth their salt knows it and will exploit it if they can.

So we might see some differences between US presidents, when it comes to the GFA. But choice of US president is not going to save the NHS from US companies.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2020 12:32

meanwhile In today PMQs, when asked about Trump's speech, Johnson says he will not comment on the US elections (just like Raab earlier)

Welcome to the UK where the Prime Minister cannot bring himself to say that the next US President should be the free and fair choice of the American people. David Schneider tweet

Detroitdarkcafe · 04/11/2020 12:41

Well that didn't go well, did it!

CaraDuneRedux · 04/11/2020 12:41

Now, much as I fucking hate Raab and Bozza, they're actually right on this one.

I'm genuinely fearful that America is poised on the brink of civil war. The last thing the situation needs is foreign politicians pitching in with comments which could be seen as partisan, even if Trump is a monster. I watched the interview with Raab this morning and he was absolutely right - he stressed that the American constitution and its political processes come with immense numbers of checks and balances, and the appropriate response is to step back and let the Americans sort it out for themselves according to their consitution and legal framework. (And pray! I'm an agnostic, but, great flying spaghetti monster, please come to our aid!)

I actually got really pissed off with the female interviewer banging on about "won't you call him out?" (What does she think this is? Fucking twitter?)

You do not take a precarious situation, with the genuine risk of civil unreset or possibly far, far worse, and pour petrol on the flames. That's just not how grown-ups are meant to behave. The fact that Trump is behaving this way like a toddler having a melt down in soft-play is not an invitation for everyone else to get in the ball pit with him and start pissing all over the balls.

InglouriousBasterd · 04/11/2020 12:41

It’s inevitable that the US will want a finger in the U.K. healthcare market pie, regardless of president - that’s the can of worms Brexit opened. The NHS will need to adapt (and I say this as someone who has worked alongside and within it for years ) and remodel, I suspect.

NOTANUM · 04/11/2020 12:42

@Cam77 re: Ireland and Biden's refusal to allow the GFA to be ditched by Boris and the Brexiteers, do you accept that both the Republic and Northern Ireland are determined not to have a border again? Or do you think that the England centric attitude of the cabinet overrides two democratically elected governments on the island of Ireland?

anon444877 · 04/11/2020 12:44

I'm no Boris fan but isn't it usual foreign policy not to comment on the outcome of elections before it's happened? Of all the things you can deride Boris for...

As for the nhs, I definitely don't want any of those competent US healthcare companies setting up overheard and offering anyone choice! Might be a bit German.

FabbyChix · 04/11/2020 12:44

COME ON BIDEN!!!!

Cam77 · 04/11/2020 12:44

Correction. Biden now 1/4. More States falling into Biden’s column.
It’s over. And I think we might not even see a Trump shit show as the popular vote is so unanimous and Biden will be around 280-290.
