Talking about what I wanted for Xmas and my upcoming birthday ( big 30 😭😭😭)
I asked for a scooter with very odd reactions from my DP and DS 🤣
I wanted it because mY DC ride their scooters to school and so thought I would join them !
They think it’s embarrassing for me and DC 🤣
Are they right ?

I loved mine, used to skoot home from the pub 😆

Meuniere · 04/11/2020 09:31

@goldenharvest

They would,look stupid where I am. Pretty rural and not at all city like. An electric bike would be a better bet, or just a normal bike. Dutch style would go down well here.
But WHY does one have to ‘do as the others where they live’? Is that not ok to wear other type of clothings, behave in a slightly different way, or use a scooter for the school run?

Are people so uptight they can’t cope with someone doing things differently?

(And yes I know, the answer is NO in a lot of places. Doing things differently is not ok :()

CalmConfident · 04/11/2020 09:33

It was also a practical way to keep up with my skooting speedster kids....and I admit, it was just great fun. Toned up the legs & bum too

SoupDragon · 04/11/2020 09:36

@Moistmolly

Playing on a scooter definitely puts you in the womanchild category
As opposed to the Boring Old Fart category...? 😂

Why do people have such a problem? It's fun, it's healthy, it doesn't damage the environment with fumes and they make adult sized scooters. It's no different to riding a bike.

Jaybin · 04/11/2020 09:41

And why should people care what you think?

Well, obviously Op does, hence asking on here.
Moistmolly · 04/11/2020 09:43

Anyone that doesn't play on a scooter is a boring old fart? Righto Hmm

pastandpresent · 04/11/2020 09:45

There was someone who did this at my dc's school. I thought it was very good idea and actually quite cool. She always looked very sporty and active, so fitted fine with scooting children.

CheetasOnFajitas · 04/11/2020 09:48

I live in London and you see a few, but everyone makes fun of people who do it.

@Derelictwreck I don’t make fun of them. Neither does @Qwertywerty3. So that is patently not true.

CheetasOnFajitas · 04/11/2020 09:51

A decent electric scooter on the road - totally different.

Totally illegal.

TheKeatingFive · 04/11/2020 09:52

If you’re going to bust out the negative judgement based on a simple choice, you can’t be surprised if others do it back to you.

TheCrowsHaveEyes · 04/11/2020 09:52

It depends where you live. Since your DCs and DH think it's embarrassing then I assume you live in an area where adults don't scoot to school.
It's your choice if you want to embarrass your DCs. As a parent you need to make that call all the time. It does seem odd you're focusing on using it the one time it would embarrass them. You could get one and use it when you're on your own. I doubt that would embarrass your DCs as much.

An adult on a scooter gives me the heebee jeebees! Just waiting to be knocked down as they make no sound and appear at speed. Leave it to the kids and allow others to walk safely without looking over their shoulders every few minutes.

CheetasOnFajitas · 04/11/2020 09:55

@Felifox

A neighbour bought an electric one and then was told it was illegal to use on the road here.
A neighbour who was incapable of Googling? Serves her right.
RattleOfBars · 04/11/2020 09:55

Sorry I think it looks really odd when adults ride scooters (unless they’re teenagers).

A bit like adults on skateboards or rollerscates!

Glitteryone · 04/11/2020 09:57

I would not do this!

My children would be mortified! Imagine their friends arriving at school in their Range Rovers and then me rolling in on a scooter?

No, no, no, never!!!!!!

TheKeatingFive · 04/11/2020 09:58

Imagine their friends arriving at school in their Range Rovers

My child would be far more embarrassed about that. His school is very big on sustainability.

CheetasOnFajitas · 04/11/2020 09:59

Fascinating how many people have leapt in this thread to declare that an adult in a scooter would look “ridiculous” “embarrassing” “silly” or even, charmingly, “a right dick”.

I bet those same posters would be the first to condemn name calling and bullying if their kid were subjected to it.

Don’t you realise it’s small minded and judgmental people like you who create a climate in which kids are bullied for having the wrong trainers or pencil case?

Disgusting. I thought attitudes had changed since I was at school the the eighties.

CheetasOnFajitas · 04/11/2020 10:01

@GoodWeatherforDucks

The posters saying that adults scooting is embarrassing are probably the ones that policed what was cool at school and we all know what bold, original thinkers they were!
Exactly.
CheetasOnFajitas · 04/11/2020 10:03

@ritzbiscuits

My husband bought an adult scooter for the school run and I made him take it back. Sorry but it's tragically embarrassing!
Wow. If I had been your husband I’d have kept the scooter and lost the wife...
TheKeatingFive · 04/11/2020 10:03

There’s a certain type of person who never grows out of the teenage bully mindset. Pretty tragic.

TheCrowsHaveEyes · 04/11/2020 10:04

Loving the lack of irony in the posters calling other posters names because they feel those posters might have called other people names when they were at school ... Grin

TheKeatingFive · 04/11/2020 10:06

because they feel those posters might have called other people names when they were at school

They’re calling people names on this thread though. 🤷‍♀️

For a fairly innocuous action.

effiehabb · 04/11/2020 10:07

Do it! I want one 😃

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/11/2020 10:09

If used safely and considerately they aren't a problem. Weaving out of traffic and pedestrians, shooting across roads without looking, or expecting people to get out of the way aren't using them safely and considerately. But, that goes for adults and children really. Getting off and walking near the school when pavements get busy is considerate.

(I've just realised how much safer the pavements near school feel this te without bikes and scooters. But they are a lot healthier than driving)
