Talking about what I wanted for Xmas and my upcoming birthday ( big 30 😭😭😭)
I asked for a scooter with very odd reactions from my DP and DS 🤣
I wanted it because mY DC ride their scooters to school and so thought I would join them !
They think it’s embarrassing for me and DC 🤣
Are they right ?

My teen / pre teen dc would die of embarrassment. Younger dc would probably not be bothered.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2020 08:48

@Walkaround

Another thing that adults look extremely silly doing, but which makes me feel much more cheerful than walking or running, is skipping (without a rope). Threaten to skip to school with your kids if they think a scooter is embarrassing Grin.
DD and I used to occasionally gallop from the car to school 😂😂

Plenty of adults using scooters here, it is great if you need to get somewhere quickly, not unusual at all and I am surprised so many people say adults should not use them.
Get the one with the bicycle style breaks- makes all the difference for convenient ride.

GoodWeatherforDucks · 04/11/2020 08:52

The posters saying that adults scooting is embarrassing are probably the ones that policed what was cool at school and we all know what bold, original thinkers they were!

ChinDiaper · 04/11/2020 08:53

I have an adult scooter, alas I don't do the school run any more.
We have hire scooters in our city too - like the Boris bikes.

ritzbiscuits · 04/11/2020 08:56

My husband bought an adult scooter for the school run and I made him take it back. Sorry but it's tragically embarrassing!

Burnthurst187 · 04/11/2020 08:57

I see a woman coming home from work on an electric scooter and I think she does look a bit silly. Last year I saw a woman on a really tiny non electric one twice and she looked ridiculous, I thought maybe her child rode it to school or nursery and she was riding it back

99% of ppl I see on scooters are mid teen males with full tracksuits on, hood up, man bag. Every one a carbon copy

CaledoniaCatalan · 04/11/2020 08:59

I think the fact your DC's have told you it's embarrassing would be enough to stop me doing it.

RedRec · 04/11/2020 09:01

If your son thinks it is embarrassing then don't do it. I am cringeing for the poor boy.

amusedbush · 04/11/2020 09:02

I used to walk 45 minutes each way to work and I seriously considered an adult scooter then. However, I was 22. I'm not sure I'd use one now that I'm 30, plus I've never seen an adult on one around here so I'd be the weird scooter lady Grin

diddl · 04/11/2020 09:04

So if the kids scoot to school & you walk, are they too fast to keep up with now?

Why are you now wanting a scooter?

Changednamesorry · 04/11/2020 09:04

I live in Barcelona and have always ridden a scooter to take my kids to school as do many parents here. I have one from Decathlon with a little platform for a child to stand on so my 3 year old comes with me and my 9 year old rides alone. They aren't embarrassed at all. Agree with PP who thinks its weird how many people are saying a mode of transport which does not harm the environment is "embarrassing".

DOINGOURBIT · 04/11/2020 09:08

Embarrasing to the kids and completely twattish. No, absolutely not for adults. Ever.

dottiedaisee · 04/11/2020 09:16

No sorry...my DC would have cried with embarrassment if I had done that . When they are adults and over the teen awkwardness then you can do what you like!!

goldenharvest · 04/11/2020 09:16

They would, look stupid where I am. Pretty rural and not at all city like. An electric bike would be a better bet, or just a normal bike. Dutch style would go down well here.

LedaandtheSwan · 04/11/2020 09:19

The coronavirus has restricted us in so many ways...if there is a tiny window of feeling joy and saying "whheeeeeee!" then I implore you to take it.

Macncheeseballs · 04/11/2020 09:19

I think it's a British thing, we're generally very uptight as a nation, not progressive and forward thinking like some European cities. People who think its embarrassing are very limited in their thinking and world view

TheKeatingFive · 04/11/2020 09:22

Older kids think their parents very existence is an embarrassment.

Pay them no heed. Take the joy were you can.

Moistmolly · 04/11/2020 09:22

Playing on a scooter definitely puts you in the womanchild category

Alexandernevermind · 04/11/2020 09:25

Why is everyone so bothered about strangers thinking we look a bit of a twat? One of the joys of hitting adulthood is you really don't need to care what people think. Actually one of the joys of parenthood is embarrassing the kids, not in a Madonna undignified way, but if you want to have a bit of fun then do so! If you want a scooter, get one, just stay in the bike lane and don't pavement hog.

DailyCandy · 04/11/2020 09:25

Feel really embarrassed for a woman I know who scoots around with full hair and makeup, cinched ski jacket and gym gear underneath. Mortifying. I can’t see beyond this one example.

And why should people care what you think?

Love51 · 04/11/2020 09:26

Never sure why parents carry scooters home. We leave them at the bike rack and scoot home on them. DD needed her bike in school on a day the childminder was picking up, we just left it overnight. Maybe I'm efficient / lazy.

Why?

If she doesn't care why do you?

The only time that people should care is if it is causing a nuisance on pavements.
