Talking about what I wanted for Xmas and my upcoming birthday ( big 30 😭😭😭)
I asked for a scooter with very odd reactions from my DP and DS 🤣
I wanted it because mY DC ride their scooters to school and so thought I would join them !
They think it’s embarrassing for me and DC 🤣
Are they right ?

@TheCrowsHaveEyes

Loving the lack of irony in the posters calling other posters names because they feel those posters might have called other people names when they were at school ... Grin
Where did I call anyone a name?
TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/11/2020 10:11

It's a common sight in my area of East London - neither cool nor uncool nor worthy of note. I don't do it because my untoned arms wobble like jelly ☹️

SoupDragon · 04/11/2020 10:12

@Moistmolly

As opposed to the Boring Old Fart category...?

Anyone that doesn't play on a scooter is a boring old fart? Righto Hmm

Don't you like it when people shove you in a category you consider insulting...? 😂😂
Macncheeseballs · 04/11/2020 10:12

So riding on a scooter is 'playing' on it. So am I playing on my bike when I cycle?

SoupDragon · 04/11/2020 10:14

If you’re going to bust out the negative judgement based on a simple choice, you can’t be surprised if others do it back to you.

Yes, that was exactly the point I was making. Funny how it's OK to make judgemental comments but not so OK when they are made back at you.

I don't think anyone not riding a scooter (do you play on a bike?) is a boring old fart. I disagree with those who are being insulting about people who do ride them though.

5lilducks · 04/11/2020 10:17

Your dc have all said it's embarrassing for them , so it doesn't really matter if others find it embarrassing or not.

I assume if you're using it to get from A to B then it's a form of transport, isn't it?

Sometimes I go out fr a bike ride just because I enjoy it.

Maybe I'm playing then?Grin

When your children are of an age to be embarrassed by you, ANYTHING you do - including breathing - will embarrass them. That phase will pass. In the meantime, do it, it is a great example to set them of not limiting your life by trying to blend into the background, and one day they will realise that.

'One day' may take a decade or so, though Grin

drumandthebass · 04/11/2020 10:25

Yes

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/11/2020 10:27

I would LOVE a scooter!

(Or an adult trike, but they are out of my price range)

TheCrowsHaveEyes · 04/11/2020 10:29

I don't think it's true that anything you do will embarrass them. But I do think we decide what embarrassments they have to live with (and could potentially learn something from) and which embarrassments are a step too far with no obvious benefit.

LolaSmiles · 04/11/2020 10:33

It would be unusual in my area so if my DC said it would be embarrassing then I'd probably refrain from using it on the school run.

In other areas it might be more common so people are used to seeing it.

Whilst almost anything can be embarrassing for kids, on this one I would listen to them.

SnakesandKnives · 04/11/2020 10:33

I feel genuinely sorry for all the people on this thread who are still, as adults, desperately worried that other adults (that they probably don’t even know) might think they look ‘silly’ for riding a scooter.

It’s your life, but I’m very glad I don’t run mine based on the potential perceptions of strangers.

Have you tried the kids ones? I'd not realised how teethjolting the hard wheels on modern ones are....

Mind you the ones I see people commuting on round here seem to have much nicer, air-filled wheels, so perhaps the adult ones are better anyhow.

Derelictwreck · 04/11/2020 10:44

@CheetasOnFajitas

I live in London and you see a few, but everyone makes fun of people who do it.

@Derelictwreck I don’t make fun of them. Neither does @Qwertywerty3. So that is patently not true.

@CheetasOnFajitas yes I was clearly being literal when I said everyone. I surveyed each person in London before I posted. Well done for catching me out.

clarification
Everyone I know makes fun of them. Doesn't make it right. But it is what it is.

stellabluesky · 04/11/2020 10:44

Up to you what you do, don't worry about what others think but you do realise it isn't legal to ride it on a cycle lane or pavement. Anyone who does it committing an offence. They're classified differently to electric bikes as they go so much faster, e bikes are speed limited. This is certainly being enforced with crackdowns in our hipsterish seaside town where the prom and school runs water full of them. Also know one scooter rider who is being sued as they knocked someone down who ended up with a badly broken arm. They didn't hear the scooter rider. They're not insured and basically have been told they'll lose the case as they were undertaking an illegal activity

stellabluesky · 04/11/2020 10:45

Are full of them not water full of them!

MushMonster · 04/11/2020 10:48

You want it, you get it! Why not? It sounds like a fun way, and also it allows you catch up with your children.
But if you are buying one with motors, those I have to say I do not like personally. I have seen people going really fast on them in the pedestration.

cochineal7 · 04/11/2020 10:48

I have one and love it. And I am older than you. It was initially to keep up with the kids on their scooters but using it more and more by itself. Would go for electric if they weren’t so expensive (and still illegal in parts).

NeonGenesis · 04/11/2020 10:50

Maybe I'm really self centred or have poor observational skills, but I honestly don't think it would even register with me what modes of transport people were using on the school run, unless they were doing something really wacky like a penny farthing or a hot air balloon. A random person on a scooter would just blend in to the background. Assuming they aren't ploughing into me whilst using it then it's not at all noteworthy. I couldn't give any less of a shit.

LuckyAmy1986 · 04/11/2020 10:52

IMO It's only embarrassing if you post photos on social media with something like "'I'm mad, me!"... like some of the mums round here do yeah, just don't bring uncessecary attention to it, or do it for attention and i don't see why not!

Georgeoftheinternet · 04/11/2020 10:55

@Poppins2016

I have an adult scooter for commuting purposes, it's fab! Check out Decathlon.
What about pot holes and stuff
SoupDragon · 04/11/2020 10:57

Everyone I know makes fun of them. Doesn't make it right. But it is what it is.

So, despite knowing it's wrong you still make fun of people. Do you let your children make fun of people too?

Abetes · 04/11/2020 10:57

My kids would find it embarrassing if I had a scooter too. Parents do lots of things that kids find embarrassing. It’s up to you whether you want this to be one of them.
