Talking about what I wanted for Xmas and my upcoming birthday ( big 30 😭😭😭)
I asked for a scooter with very odd reactions from my DP and DS 🤣
I wanted it because mY DC ride their scooters to school and so thought I would join them !
They think it’s embarrassing for me and DC 🤣
Are they right ?

I love a scoot but isn’t it illegal in the pavement ? Same as cycles ?

Mammylamb · 04/11/2020 08:06

I really want a scooter. But DS is only 5 do not yet embarrassed by everything I do

TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 04/11/2020 08:09

I’ve got a scooter. I only see why it would be embarrassing! Loads of people have them here. Really practical way to get about.

They aren’t illegal on the pavement, only the electric ones are.

TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 04/11/2020 08:09

My Ds is 6 and I can give him a lift on it (watch the max weight it can carry if planning this!).

Lardlizard · 04/11/2020 08:12

Yes even the push scooters ones are illegal which personally I find bonkers also riding push bikes on paths is illegal too

ivykaty44 · 04/11/2020 08:14

lardlizard - a non powered scooter is not illegal on the pavement, there is also legislation to allow cycling on the pavement and many pavements are also cycle paths

Noitjustwontdo · 04/11/2020 08:16

I used to see a Mum scooting home on her child’s scooter and yeah, she looked silly. Probably had fun though so go her!

Mcmole · 04/11/2020 08:18

I don't do the school run on it as we're in a busy city centre so it wouldn't be too practical but I do go out on it with 6 year old DD and it is so much fun! I don't think it would be embarrassing - I am seeing more and more adults on them these days

Shinyletsbebadguys · 04/11/2020 08:20

Some of these responses seem really odd to me , loads of the parents in our school scoot with their DC some on electric scooters , somenride their bikes with dc and the only one who gets grumpy looks is the father who stays kn the scooter and tries to bully his way through the group trying to get in the gate.

Noome else even gets a passing look.

But blimey how depressing to live your life dependant on who thinks you look silly ?

I don't but mainly because I don't have the coordination and would without doubt face plant alot.

I would say listen to whether your DC would be embarrassed yes but ignore adults for God sake.

Macncheeseballs · 04/11/2020 08:21

I wouldn't worry about the legality of it at this stage, as things will eventually change. I welcome any mode of transport that gets people's arses out of cars. Happy to share the pavement with you too!

CharityPecksniff · 04/11/2020 08:22

'I used to see a Mum scooting home on her child’s scooter and yeah, she looked silly.'

Er... that was me actually.

Felifox · 04/11/2020 08:24

A neighbour bought an electric one and then was told it was illegal to use on the road here.

Teakind · 04/11/2020 08:25

I’m not a big fan of them but if you want one go for it.

There’s a local school here at the top of a slight hill. The oddest thing I’ve seen is a dad who picks up his son on what looks like a large skateboard but they both sit on it and go really fast down the hill! They both wear helmets and the dad seems in control of it but looks dangerous and bizarre as he’s weaving through the pedestrians.

NeonGenesis · 04/11/2020 08:26

I used to see a Mum scooting home on her child’s scooter and yeah, she looked silly.

I think she would have looked more silly if she was carrying it. If you have to have it with you anyway then surely you'd just use it..?

Laughingcrow · 04/11/2020 08:27

Yanbu. A friend of mine makes her daughter's one taller and scoots home. She's quite short so it works for her. I think it's great. She gets home in half the time and doesn't have to lumber it home whacking her ankles

Sargass0 · 04/11/2020 08:28

"I'm mad I am"

SoupDragon · 04/11/2020 08:33

@Sargass0

"I'm mad I am"
Better than "I'm sooo boring!"
namechangetheworld · 04/11/2020 08:37

Listen to your family. You'd look like a right dick.

Yesyoudoknowme · 04/11/2020 08:39

I thought embarrassing your kids was the most important part of the parenting job description? Your kids will be embarrassed by simple fact they have parents, build them some resilience! I had a very embarrassing car when my kids were at school (think noddy car with a big key on the roof kind of thing) - they may have been embarrassed the first time their mates saw it but that was it, and many of their friends loved it. Why do parents pussy foot around their kids so much, live YOUR life, you are more than a parent. I would LOVE a scooter but my knees couldn't cope Sad

Macncheeseballs · 04/11/2020 08:41

Not sure what's embarrassing about a fit, healthy, active parent.

Walkaround · 04/11/2020 08:43

Yes, you’ll probably embarrass your children and look ridiculous, but scooting is fun, or kids wouldn’t enjoy it, would they? So, you’ll probably enjoy your present.

Walkaround · 04/11/2020 08:45

Another thing that adults look extremely silly doing, but which makes me feel much more cheerful than walking or running, is skipping (without a rope). Threaten to skip to school with your kids if they think a scooter is embarrassing Grin.

diddl · 04/11/2020 08:45

What sort of scooter are you thinking of, Op?

AuldSpookySewers · 04/11/2020 08:46

If you curtail doing fun things in your life because you’re worried about what other’s might think, what message is that sending to your kids?

It’s probably time to grow up and learn to be an independent adult and stop giving a fuck about other people whose opinions are completely irrelevant.

DeciduousPerennial · 04/11/2020 08:47

I want one too
