To not want to give my dinner to the dog

Lost it with DH today and would like to know everyone's thoughts on this totally unimportant issue! Every time I cook something that could potentially have leftovers for the dog, my DH will intervene before I have 'too much' or seconds because 'the dog could have that!'. At least 3 or 4 times now I have stated that I cooked it, and if I want to eat it I will. Then comes a chorus of 'poor doggie....mummy ate your dinner....' etc. Any time I go out anywhere, I always, without fail, sort out food for everyone before I go. Today I went for a haircut. Made a shepherds pie for everyone before I went. Got back to leftovers. Was starving so just took the dish out of the oven and started eating. DH comes in, 'oh are you just eating it straight out of there!' 'Yes, yes I am, because I'm starving'! I laughed. ' Oh I thought the dog could have some of that!' he said. 'I said not likely, I'm really hungry!' He then said 'but there was loads in there!!'. At this point I lost my shit. I had literally had 2 mouthfuls OF THE DINNER I COOKED. In a totally melodramatic gesture I put the whole lot in the dog's bowl so it was overflowing, whilst shouting that he had zero respect for me and that I am totally at the bottom of the pile. Everyone else gets to eat their dinner no problem, but if I have the audacity to eat THE THING I BLOODY COOKED I get told it's not fair on the dog. FFS. I said when he starts cooking he will get to bloody well decide what the dog gets. And breathe.

Husband strayed, losing his job because of it, ergo selling house, 2 anxious teenagers already stressed about GCSEs and COVID, now in bits over family split, my heart still being unreasonably lazy.

Yeah, super shit year

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/11/2020 22:47

@LittleOwl153

I would simply not bother plating him any tomorrow. Just put his portion in the dog bowl see how he likes it. You could be generous and give him a couple of teaspoons!
This. If he wants leftovers to go to the dog, then he can create said leftovers by not eating his portion. He does not get to control your portion size, and I frankly find it a bit feckin' creepy that he thinks he can tell you to eat less than you want to.

"At least 3 or 4 times now I have stated that I cooked it, and if I want to eat it I will."
And this is the only thing you are slightly unreasonable about. I'd have ripped him a new one the second time he made this comment.

But yeah, agree with everyone else. Husband is a dick. Can't you feed HIM to the dog?

sardine oil works for tigers...maybe for dogs aswell.

Is it even healthy for the dog to always have human food?

MrsMarrio · 03/11/2020 22:52

This is hilarious! How annoying. Dog food is for the dog, not scraps of human food that could equate to another full portion ...that could potentially lead to over feeding of the dog as human food can be quite calorific. Ok for a treat but not all the time and defiantly not when a human wants to eat said leftovers.

Someonesayroadtrip · 03/11/2020 22:54

Argh, what an ass, if be tempted to just give his portion to the dog from now on.

Now order yourself a takeaway and eat that in front of him.

ConstantlySeekingHappiness · 03/11/2020 22:56

I echo PP....

Onions
In
Everything.

Everything.

MoonJelly · 03/11/2020 23:06

Make it a rule that from now on the dog's diet will be dog food and nothing more. If anyone really wants to give it leftovers, it will come from their plate and no-one else's. The first person to suggest someone else leave human food for the dog gets to eat only dog food for the next week.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 03/11/2020 23:09

I'd have given it to the dog, put my coat on and gone to a favourite restaurant stay late, have a glass of wine or three and call him for a lift home. well, staying late a bit limited since they're all closing at ten..

lockdownqueen · 03/11/2020 23:16

Lurchermom · 03/11/2020 23:25

Not that this is helpful but one of my funniest memories is my great aunt (then about 88) getting up when our Sunday roast was served up at a pub for a family meal. She hobbled along taking a slice of beef off everyone's plate to take a doggy bag home for the family pet Grin

AdoraBell · 03/11/2020 23:31

As others have said, he can cook his and the dogs food, he has to make sure not to include ingredients that are toxic for dogs.

Also I would ask him that as clearly the dog is more important than you why did he not marry the dog?

BluebellsGreenbells · 03/11/2020 23:41

Please update on tomorrow’s tea!

yvanka · 03/11/2020 23:48

Even if everyone was done eating, I still wouldn't give perfectly good human food to a dog. Put it in the fridge for tomorrow.

YerawizardHarree · 03/11/2020 23:55

Ooh that's made me so angry!!

purplemunkey · 03/11/2020 23:56

Has anyone mentioned onions are toxic to dogs yet? Grin

OP that would piss me right off. Hopefully he got the point today.

BluebellsGreenbells · 03/11/2020 23:57

I’d love to know what the difference between human food and dog food is, I mean 50 years ago dogs ate the same food as humans. Then humans invented dog food made from scaps. Now they get the best bits in dog food. Where does it end?

My dog dogs up carrots and potatoes, he eats meat, and chicken and vegetables.

He had tip-bits if anyone has some spare.

YerawizardHarree · 03/11/2020 23:58

Is onions are toxic to dogs the new cancel the cheque Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/11/2020 23:58

@LittleOwl153

I would replace his plate with the dog bowl for the next meal you cook, he can share his with the dog. Or maybe you could give him a couple of teaspoons.

And dont bother cooking them next time you are out!

Ohhh yes, @LittleOwl153! Brilliant.
TigerBrite · 04/11/2020 00:03

You’re going to make your dog ill. Human food is too rich and in the long term will cause pancreatitis for your dog. However, if I was cooking something that was suitable for the whole family to eat (eg plain chicken) then everyone would get a fair portion, and I’d be annoyed if DH greeded another family member’s portion on top of his own share.

Idunnoyou · 04/11/2020 00:08

Why can't he save some? I'm all for sharing and giving to the dog, I do too but leftovers so does my partner. Dog also has his own food
Your partner is strange

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/11/2020 00:09

My mum hates onions, so she used to make her cottage pie without it. In fact - there were no onions in most of her (savoury) cooking - she did put an onion, halved, into a casserole, so a bit of the flavour was imparted to the gravy, but only a bit. The highlight was a lasagne she made for my dses when they were little - no onions or garlic in the bolognese sauce, and no tomatoes either - she hated them too. So basically bland mince with a bit of ketchup in it as the meat layers of lasagne. It was pretty much exactly as delicious(?) as you are imagining!
