To not want to give my dinner to the dog

Lost it with DH today and would like to know everyone's thoughts on this totally unimportant issue! Every time I cook something that could potentially have leftovers for the dog, my DH will intervene before I have 'too much' or seconds because 'the dog could have that!'. At least 3 or 4 times now I have stated that I cooked it, and if I want to eat it I will. Then comes a chorus of 'poor doggie....mummy ate your dinner....' etc. Any time I go out anywhere, I always, without fail, sort out food for everyone before I go. Today I went for a haircut. Made a shepherds pie for everyone before I went. Got back to leftovers. Was starving so just took the dish out of the oven and started eating. DH comes in, 'oh are you just eating it straight out of there!' 'Yes, yes I am, because I'm starving'! I laughed. ' Oh I thought the dog could have some of that!' he said. 'I said not likely, I'm really hungry!' He then said 'but there was loads in there!!'. At this point I lost my shit. I had literally had 2 mouthfuls OF THE DINNER I COOKED. In a totally melodramatic gesture I put the whole lot in the dog's bowl so it was overflowing, whilst shouting that he had zero respect for me and that I am totally at the bottom of the pile. Everyone else gets to eat their dinner no problem, but if I have the audacity to eat THE THING I BLOODY COOKED I get told it's not fair on the dog. FFS. I said when he starts cooking he will get to bloody well decide what the dog gets. And breathe.

He’s being an absolutely arsehole, and both of you are potentially putting your dog at risk. Human leftovers generally aren’t good for dogs - onions, garlic and chives are toxic to them even in small amours, and most human dishes contain far too much salt for dogs.

Your dog should be eating dog food and your husband should stop policing what you eat because he’s being a real arsehole about it.

I’m no dog expert but I thought dogs weren’t supposed to eat human food, don’t they have some sort of special diet?

Well no one's covering themselves in glory here. Your H sounds like a bit of a knob, but you also sound like a petulant child putting your dinner in the dogs bowl to make a point. What did you think you'd actually achieve by doing that? Can guarantee your H barely gave it another seconds though, whereas you were hungry and then went without dinner. Also, not the point of your thread, but how is it possible to be so hungry that you need to eat directly out of the dish? It takes seconds to put food onto a plate

The last portion of shepherds pie out of the oven dish is delicious. All crispy potato edges mmmm! Op Yanbu! Does your dog also have dog food? Is he overweight at all?

This goes deeper than the food you made. No man should ever comment on what his wife is eating. Fastest way to getting a sex drought!

I don't get it. Does your dog live on scraps? I thought most people these days gave their dog separate dog food.

Your DH sounds like a twat. I wouldn't be too keen on cooking for him anymore. Maybe he should be sorting himself and the dog out.

It's a bit petty to feed it all to the dog but it's definitely something I'd do in the heat of the moment. Recently dh said I was not to use his travel cup, even though he was not using it and knew mine had broken, so I took a China cup, saucer and all, with my tea into his car and drank it while he drove . Yanbu op just tell him if he wants the dog to have dinner he needs to cook it and cook extra. And it's probably not very good for the dog to eat all that human food anyway, but then I don't have a dog so not sure if it's OK.

I am absolutely howling at this!! It’s my birthday today, it’s been proper shit, and I have no proper belly laughed/cried with laughter in as long as I can remember but this has actually done me 🤣🤣🤣 please tell me his reaction whilst you sat in his car with the China tea cup 🤣

Like others have mentioned here, there are lots of human foods that are toxic to dogs...spices, onion, sweetcorn, grapes...and salt isn't good either. It is not just you being reproached over eating the 'dogs dinner' but the vet bill from sorting out the mess afterwards. Three trips to the vet for one of our cats has recently cost me £600, for example.

Just stop giving the dog any human food, it’s not good for them! Your husband has in his head that there’s always a serving for the dog. Obviously you are not cooking for the dog! He can give up some of his food if he’s so keen, easy habit to get into but it’s really not good for the dog’s health.
