Leaving because not allowed to wfh

bctf123 · 02/11/2020 09:37

background- i worked really well from home during lockdown and replying to emails immediately, always sat at my desk etc
as soon as i had made a few errors in my work, i was called back in on the pretext of needing an office environment to work well(around September)
i am the only one called in along with a young apprentice who needs to be on site. i am a bit of a pushover and lowest in the office chain and feel ive been singled out despite my contribution and role.
the manager has been really resistant to me wfh, including in the current lockdown and even on a part time basis, which i dont understand and which i dont want to argue as its a bit of a dog eat dog type of environment.

i am now thinking of leaving as i dont feel treated like an adult at all. the way im being treated feels petty and humiliating.
my motivation has fizzled out since being back in the office and i spend a lot of time watching tv instead of being productive.

aibu to want to leave? they have said they want me to stay but it feels like im being pushed by being singled out as if i need supervision

I hear you use the word "doormat" a bit so I do wonder if perhaps the starting point is building your self esteem and assertiveness, so you know your worth from the start? I would hang on to this job and do a bit of "re-building self worth" on the side. Then, when you think you value yourself more, you can go out into the marketplace. Best of Luck

bctf123 · 02/11/2020 12:27

doormat zoned is a play on words against being friendzoned

yes i am afraid of being shouted at. i hate confrontation and have done since my childhood. my supervisor used to have shouting matches with colleagues and im not mentally strong enough to cope with that. im very polite and reserved.

its hard to address officially. the team is small and it would create unnecessary tension as my colleagues actually like the standard of my work and im quite likeable

Leave your job by all means 'just because you want to.

Have a private source of income to sustain you after you do in the UK.

bctf123 · 02/11/2020 12:28

lol i have written my fingers are arthritic. i wouldnt write emails like this

OP posts:
m0therofdragons · 02/11/2020 12:30

Surely a supervisor’s role is to allocate work to you. You are not doing her work, you’re doing work for the team set specifically by your supervisor for you to do. It’s her job to delegate!

You do sound immature and like you need micromanaging. If mistakes are flagged but you can’t even confirm if you did the work or someone else did then surely you’re not paying enough attention. I’ve just had an issue raised about a mistake from 25 March. I can tell by the style of writing who in my team did the work!

caringcarer · 02/11/2020 12:33

Others working from home are not slacking they are working.my DH is pleased he saves travel fare whilst wfh and he is a actually working longer hours now not traveling as much. If you made mistakes whilst wfh and watch TV in office I expect if you give notice in they will get a replacement who is less error prone and more.productive. Wfh is not a right unless in your contract.

bctf123 · 02/11/2020 12:39

this is how it works for us. there is no work to allocate as our duties and roles are clear. she is more of a supervisor as a figurehead.

i do know who did it but when i challenged that the error was made by someone else she shouted me down. they then clarified on monday and apologies but the moment was over

You haven't been 'singled out'!
The apprentice is working on site - and there has to be at least one other person around for health and safety reasons - and that's you.

You faff about at home watching TV instead of focusing on your work - and apparently you need constant attention to 'bounce off ideas' ???

If you're that far down on the hierarchy chain in the office - what exactly is it that you do that needs you to constantly bounce ideas off others?

Quit complaining and get on with your job.

Wifenumber1 · 02/11/2020 12:43

Pretend you have Covid symptoms. Call in sick, saying you’re ‘trying to book a Covid test online’ but the site is busy and not taking bookings right now.

Tell them you’ll have to isolate at home until you can book a test.

That buys you 7 days on sick pay to look for another job.
Except there won’t be any interviews or hiring occurring during imminent month long + lockdown.

Or just remind them lockdown means you have to stay at home, and not go into work if you can work from home, which you can.

bctf123 · 02/11/2020 12:44

not everybody slacks but some do.
during covid yes its easier to find a replacement...but who train them if everyones at home?
wfh is a privilege which is why i would have liked an adult conversation. its generally a very flexible atmosphere except on this issue and for me only

alloutofducks · 02/11/2020 12:46

What do arthritic fingers have to do with it? Do the same fingers not write your work emails, as well? Confused

(Not being unsympathetic, here: I also have severe arthritis in my wrists and fingers).

RaspberryCoulis · 02/11/2020 12:46

Jeezo. Please ignore this horrendous advice from someone who clearly has lost the plot.

bctf123 · 02/11/2020 12:47

lol im happy to go in rather than call in sick.
i can also easily jobhunt

reasoning is not working so i have just agreed with them that being at work is best

OP posts:
Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 02/11/2020 12:48

@Wifenumber1 are you for real? Your comment is disgraceful. There are genuine people with covid needing to use those helplines and services and you’re encouraging the OP to fake symptoms so they can look for another job. The OP clearly states that she was making mistakes wfh which is why her employer needed to bring her back into the office. Maybe read the whole thread before providing useless advice.

Moondust001 · 02/11/2020 12:49

I note that you have carefully avoided answering the question asked twice now - despite having an answer for absolutely everything else. So I am going to take it that you are in the office and that you have spent a huge amount of your time at work posting to and reading this thread. Where I work- a "cushy" public sector place - we'd have you suspended and pending gross misconduct disciplinary by now.

bctf123 · 02/11/2020 12:50

then they should be clear that its h & s. i feel picked on for my work even though they say im doing great and would not like me to leave

we get a lot of new issues etc

i seemed to be ok for mnths in lockdown without supervision...dont know whats going on

OP posts:
bctf123 · 02/11/2020 12:51

yes im at work. we're alllowed to use the internet

OP posts:
Sonders · 02/11/2020 12:52

This would worry me as an employer. You have been reprimanded for something really minor, and asked to come onsite so that you can receive more support.

I totally understand that from your POV the support isn't there, but that was the business' intention.

Instead of proceeding as your normal, wonderful self and demonstrating that the incident was a one-off and therefore, you no longer need support - you decided to become a much worse employee?

I'm struggling to understand your motivation, because it comes across like you're properly shooting yourself in the foot.

bctf123 · 02/11/2020 12:54

ive demonstrated my abilities. there is no changing the situation as it is an unchangeable situation on their side despite wanting to also keep me on

OP posts:
Hopoindown31 · 02/11/2020 12:54

Is your supervisor in the office?

burritofan · 02/11/2020 12:54

You’ve posted 25 times since 9.30! Between this and the TV it suggests you’re massively unfocused and concentrating only on this imaginary grievance that you’re not being treated like an adult by being allowed to WFH, rather than addressing why you make mistakes in the first place.

Nikori · 02/11/2020 12:57

OP, my advice is to job hunt, but you might find it difficult to find something better at the moment, but there is never any harm in looking for somewhere better to work. If you can't find anything else, maybe it's better to focus on your current work.

Moondust001 · 02/11/2020 12:57

@bctf123

yes im at work. we're alllowed to use the internet
To spend hours on personal slagging off of your manager and employer on line instead of working? Are you for real?

But I'm going to let you into a little management secret before leaving the thread as it is pointless giving you advice. Managers do not tell you that you are awful at your job and they are just looking for the evidence to prove it. They just look for the evidence. The writing for you was writ large on the office wall when you were told that you couldn't work from home because you were making mistakes in your work. You simply appear to be unable to read it. So I'd definitely look for another job because I suspect you won't be in this one much longer.

AlternativePerspective · 02/11/2020 13:02

You’re slagging off your employer on a public Internet forum. Don’t think they can’t read everything you post on the internet, they can.

And what are you going to tell any prospective new employer about why you quit your last job? And what do you think they will put on your reference?

Obviously you were nowhere near as productive at home as you’re telling people you were. That’s not necessarily unusual, a lot of people lack the self discipline to work from home, but it seems you want to be at home because you’re generally a slacker anyway and do the bear minimum while surfing the internet and watching television on your employer’s time, and if you’re at home you can get away with it more.

Donkeeey · 02/11/2020 13:03

@bctf123

Oh dear, you know it's not CONSTANT internet usage, don't you?! It's to quickly check on things like email occasionally. Also, many companies monitor what sites you access during your internet usage, literally down to the pages you go to on the sites you access... Wouldn't be hard to find this post!
