I work at a university on the front line seeing students 1-1 (I work in student support) and have continued to see students this term at a distance & with measures in place. ALL the students I have seen have been grateful for the human contact.

I also have 2 kids in primary and secondary. I want them to stay in school as my eldest had to have counselling after the last lockdown.

Aibu to say that schools need to stay open and I say that as someone on the front line.

YABU - they should shut
YANBU- they need to stay open

The next four weeks will be an important test to see if the infection can be controlled whilst keeping educational settings open. I am unclear that it will, but at least the evidence will be there either way.

honkytonkheroe · 01/11/2020 10:14

Totally agree they should stay open and close only as a last resort. I’ve sure my son didn’t fall behind in lockdown but I really don’t want to go back to home schooling.

AlexaShutUp · 01/11/2020 10:15

OP, I haven't made anything up. You said:

Aibu to say that schools need to stay open and I say that as someone on the front line.

I think the implication of this is clearly that you consider your "frontline" risks to be comparable to those faced by teachers in school; if not, why would you even mention them in the same sentence?

IrishMamaMia · 01/11/2020 10:15

I work in a secondary school and think it's imperative that they're kept open. Those who have a scenario where they are vulnerable should be re-deployed.
It's too much of a sacrifice to make to close and it didn't exactly eradicate the virus last time.

Piggywaspushed · 01/11/2020 10:15

Your whole OP was literally about yourself as an illustrative example OP!!

Sittingonthefence83 · 01/11/2020 10:15

Op please ignore the posters that are nit picking about you using the words front line. Interesting thread.

I think that if they closed short term for four weeks, short lockdown get numbers down a bit and then continue with school, would be preferable than the inevitable continued 2 weeks isolation. Some secondaries have had children out for 6 of the 8 weeks.. Surely to potentially have blocks of time by doing this would be preferable to currently given the isolations will only inevitably increase.

Onadifferentuniverse · 01/11/2020 10:17

I don’t see the point in locking us down but keeping them open, it feels to me like it’s going to cause more issues than solve in the long run.

Onadifferentuniverse · 01/11/2020 10:18

I don’t want them to shut, nor I do I want another lockdown btw.

Whatafustercluck · 01/11/2020 10:19

Homeschooling a primary aged child whilst attempting to work ft during the previous lockdown was a miserable existence for the whole family and it brought us close to breaking point. Work increased, as did the conference calls, which became back to back. We all suffered hugely as a result. We are only grateful we were lucky enough to wfh and not lose our jobs - luckier than many, certainly.

In our son's school there have been no positive cases. We are tier 1, for what it's worth now. I imagine it's pretty scary for pupils and teachers in tier 3 right now and I base my yanbu vote on purely selfish reasons.

Nogoodusername · 01/11/2020 10:20

I also agree that the ‘shut the school/total
Lockdown’ crowd are mainly people who don’t have a stake in it: are in professions that are financially secure, have paid off mortgage, don’t have young children who they would either have to homeschool or watch the catastrophic effects on them that school shut downs closed.
School closures affected both my children really badly, I barely emerged with my sanity in one piece having them both at home while working a demanding job, and DH was made redundant last month so we are up shit creek financially

Mrstwiddle · 01/11/2020 10:20

I don’t understand why universities haven’t switched to a completely online model, like many other countries, this would make more sense than closing schools (at least junior schools) where online teaching is harder due to the age of the students.

BefuddledPerson · 01/11/2020 10:20

I think they need to go part time to cut transmission in schools which is a major part of the problem.

I understand people's concerns about managing, but I think Covid is spreading too fast and schools are a big cause. So YABU.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 01/11/2020 10:22

To be honest I think this so called lockdown will have very little effect if schools etc are still open. It just does not make sense.

DBML · 01/11/2020 10:24

I think that schools should close, so that instead of teaching I can meet up with people and go for walks outside. Far better for my MH.

Onadifferentuniverse · 01/11/2020 10:25

I’m not one of those people, I have 2 young children and it’s impossible to home school the one that is at school with the younger one around, I still think schools need to close for at least a circuit breaker.
I don’t want to go into a 4 week lockdown for fun, I want to go into it knowing it’s going to make a huge difference. I can’t see it making too much of a dent whilst there’s classes of 30 mixing.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 01/11/2020 10:26

And I would be willing to bet that by December or even late November the schools will shut anyway, once they realise cases aren't decreasing.

Thrownaway · 01/11/2020 10:26

Other threads are full of examples of "well if the schools are open then my kids can mix outside" " i wont be not mixing with other households because i do at school gates" etc

People want the rules to make sense, and as long as there is a exception for education then people will feel they dont make sense so not follow them

It only works if we agree that education is a piority and that we will follow the other rules regardless which clearly everyone is pushing against

Onadifferentuniverse · 01/11/2020 10:26

How shit for children’s mental health also- no, you can’t see your grandparents but you can go to school.

So much easier to explain and implement whilst they’re at home.

Izzy30 · 01/11/2020 10:26

I think schools are an essential service and such a lifeline to so many children. I can’t believe that they’re negotiable in all of this.

DBML · 01/11/2020 10:26

Apologies. I’m just being arsey after getting frustrated about another thread.

AlexaShutUp · 01/11/2020 10:27

And I would be willing to bet that by December or even late November the schools will shut anyway, once they realise cases aren't decreasing.

Maybe they're holding out until December and will then just give the kids a really long Christmas break?

Mumofsend · 01/11/2020 10:29

Children need to be in school. I don't work so don't have to worry about childcare. I do worry about their mental health. Their education. Their next 80 year's.

jeaux90 · 01/11/2020 10:29

Yes they need to stay open

Mumofsend · 01/11/2020 10:29

Why are people so adamant it will make no difference? Signs in the north east with tier 3 is that things are stabilising?
