I work at a university on the front line seeing students 1-1 (I work in student support) and have continued to see students this term at a distance & with measures in place. ALL the students I have seen have been grateful for the human contact.

I also have 2 kids in primary and secondary. I want them to stay in school as my eldest had to have counselling after the last lockdown.

Aibu to say that schools need to stay open and I say that as someone on the front line.

YABU - they should shut
YANBU- they need to stay open

And yet the government says that bubbles should only have their own toilets 'where possible' because it can't be arsed to provide any funding for temporary toilet blocks.

I was initially on the fence about it during summer but since dd has gone back it is absolutely so beneficial. Ds is also due to start nursery in Jan and if he misses out on it I will be gutted as he is so ready to mix and socialise and learn more independently. I think it depends on individual circumstances and they should perhaps have more choice for those who are high risk but they really do need to stay open. Im not a teacher and I feel her learning really suffered during school closures.

Our whole primary is sharing 4 toilets at lunchtime. So much for separate bubbles.
WindFlower92 · 08/11/2020 10:53

Is everyone else's school sending home whole bubbles if there's a positive case? We're just sending home close contacts, not even the class the pupils are actually in...secondary school here.

@OverTheRainbow88

We’ve currently got 1000 kids off self isolating as had 4 cases across year groups.
Wow, what part of the country is this?
OverTheRainbow88 · 08/11/2020 11:31

Bristol

@WindFlower92

It seems so, the DfE decides not the school

WindFlower92 · 08/11/2020 11:46

Do you think they'll make the same decision for every school now that we're all in the same 'tier so to speak @OverTheRainbow88

OverTheRainbow88 · 08/11/2020 11:47

Well that would make sense... So they probably won’t!!!!

All schools I know around here have had whole year groups sent home for 2 weeks for a case in that bubble. And then those who share a school coach with that kid across the bubbles!!!

HotPenguin · 08/11/2020 11:56

I haven't voted as I think shut the schools v keep them open is too simplistic. I think we will have to do more with schools, possibly putting secondaries on rota, or having older year groups remote learning. Provision for some to go into school where learning at home is not possible/ not suitable. The virus is spreading much more in secondaries than primaries so they need to be treated differently.

WhoWants2Know · 08/11/2020 12:10

One of the things that troubles me is the disparity in education across the country this year. Large parts of the country have had year groups off off for weeks, and others have had loads of supply teachers who do their best but aren't the same as having a consistent teacher, especially in specialist subjects.

Even with the schools open as much as possible, kids aren't all getting the same level of education.

ForthPlace · 08/11/2020 17:44

@Nicknacky
Schools were open for key workers all the way through lockdown

Seems you got a raw deal given that you didn't agree with the statement above and didn't have any KW childcare provision.

DfE guidance was during the summer term lockdown schools had to provide places for children of KW's. Did you contact the school, your MP?

In fact in my LA we provided for all of the holidays, bank holidays at Easter and Whit and every weekend, through hub schools with volunteer LA staff and volunteer teachers and TA's from across our schools. This included early years hubs, with free care, again seven days per week and all holidays.

Nicknacky · 08/11/2020 17:50

ForthPlace I didn’t contact the school or MP as that was the guidance from the local authority so doubtful the school would have over ride that. My childminder refused us care also. Fun times.

I’m not in England, by the way.

As it was, shortly afterwards H had to close his business so he was home so that solved that problem and when H went back to work my dad took over childcare. We would have been screwed if my dad hadn’t been furloughed too.

However of schools close again, my dad won’t be able to help.
