I work at a university on the front line seeing students 1-1 (I work in student support) and have continued to see students this term at a distance & with measures in place. ALL the students I have seen have been grateful for the human contact.

I also have 2 kids in primary and secondary. I want them to stay in school as my eldest had to have counselling after the last lockdown.

Aibu to say that schools need to stay open and I say that as someone on the front line.

YABU - they should shut
YANBU- they need to stay open

@AlexaShutUp

And I would be willing to bet that by December or even late November the schools will shut anyway, once they realise cases aren't decreasing.

Maybe they're holding out until December and will then just give the kids a really long Christmas break?

They should have had a circuit breaker earlier and maybe added an extra week to the half term school holidays, instead of delaying the inevitable.
loulouljh · 01/11/2020 12:01

Of course they have to stay open. Our poor children have missed so much. We are at risk of losing an entire generation. This cannot happen. In addition if schools shut parents cannot work. The already suffering economy suffers even more.

Nanny0gg · 01/11/2020 12:01

Must stay open!

One of my DGC will never catch up if they close again. He needs his teacher.

loulouljh · 01/11/2020 12:02

Us for Them are NOT a union. They are a group of concerned parents wanting to act in the best interests of their children. Teachers unions seem to have the opposite interests at heart.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 01/11/2020 12:03

Absolutely they have wasted the half term opportunity!

People just follow the rules - stop making excuses as to why you and your family shouldn’t.

I'm happy for either way to be honest. My kids did so well at homeschooling but are now enjoying school. My work were flexible last time so can't see why they wouldnt be again if schools were to close. We are quiet a homely family so enjoy being in anyway (luckily).

NetflixWatcher · 01/11/2020 12:08

Safety wise I'd prefer they be home.

IndecentFeminist · 01/11/2020 12:13

We are in a low community transmission area, and there have been 3 cases in local schools on the island. Since September. So it would be massive overkill to close us.

SoloMummy · 01/11/2020 12:14

@ohnothisagain

Other countries are keeping schools open and cases are going down. I also find it interesting that teachers unions (where members have nothing to loose from lockdown, but are very comfortable) push for closure, but you don’t hear anything about the need to close from early years practitioners who’s risk is much higher (bodily fluids etc), but who will loose their jobs and income....
Yes and they actually have better guidance. The children have to endure windows open. Ours aren't. They wear masks. Ours aren't. They don't sing. Ours are. They have smaller bubbles. Ours are huge. They have far more staggered times. Most don't here. They spend more time outside. So far my Los been outside for one learning session. One. No assemblies. Ours are within their huge bubbles! Ours sit next to 5 other children. There's sit on individual desks spaces apart.

Perhaps if we took basic precautions like elsewhere we'd not be in this appalling situation.

Let alone the fact that teschers are at risk. What about all of the children who live with someone who is clinically extremely vulnerable and was shielding. What about the risk this continues to pose to them? The fact that parents will be fined if they pull their child out?

Those saying teachers shouldn't have to provide class and home schooling work simultaneously, well given theyre supposed to be setup for online learning, why is it so difficult to upload classwork and present to the class and have this being recorded for online learners?

ivfbeenbusy · 01/11/2020 12:17

I don't know any teachers that have caught covid.......

What level of input did you give your child educationally during the lockdown? My child has additional needs and made amazing progress due to what was bloody hard graft from me, despite the fact that I worked from home throughout. Perhaps parents should take more responsibility for their children's educational achievement or indeed lack of?

The rise in cases corresponds with the schools going back, and children are known super spreaders of disease, with no social distancing and little awareness of hygiene.

Thank you! Been saying this for bloody ages, no one listens. They still won't.

I get why no one wants schools closed though. But realistically if you want to actually stop covid, it's the only way. Otherwise, we might as well just go back to normal fully and let it spread through everyone. It's going to happen anyway, we are delaying the inevitable.

SoloMummy · 01/11/2020 12:27

@DownstairsMixUp

Solomummy are you In a dream world????

How do you suppose parents that are working from home teach their kids? You're utterly deluded!

My son fell behind because I'm studying as an nhs student and we have one laptop which I use for lectures, he has additional needs and has a 1:1 at school every day till midday, I also have an 11 year old?! I physically did have no time to teach them! Maybe you need to realise some people actually have jobs and get your head out of your arse Hmm

Guess what, I managed it if you WANTED TO, so could have you. This pandemic has really shown which parents have stepped up as parents and really behaved in the best interests of their children.... It's all about priorities and sacrifices.
IndecentFeminist · 01/11/2020 12:30

😂 cause no kids are different

RozHuntleysStump · 01/11/2020 12:31

Everything should close. Otherwise there is barely any point to it. My son’s care centre will close. His mental health is important, my,entail health is important. I don’t know why everyone is going on about the mental health of children who will be able to recover more easily. Think about my mentally ill, autistic son who is now in lockdown but yet teenagers and kids can continue their lives. I’m so pissed off.

I do thanks Hmm We read every day, do spellings practice everyday, worksheets, homework books, projects, etc... As a result they are excellent readers and get 10/10 every week in their spellings. But to the point where ALL education is at home and trying to educate 3 children all at once when they’re at different stages and distract each other, and without all the technology needed? Are you seriously saying that if parents don’t do that then they’re lacking support for their children?
I have a child with additional needs too. You should know full well that children cope differently. My ds didn’t cope as well yours did. Is he an only child by any chance?

My children thrive in the school environment. I just support and add to their learning at home. I’m not their main source of teaching the curriculum to them.

OverTheRainbow88 · 01/11/2020 12:35

@Sexnotgender

Didn’t they close end of March and reopen beginning of June? That’s 3 Months

FlippinNoah · 01/11/2020 12:47

@ivfbeenbusy I'm a primary teacher - I caught Covid. So did the TA in my class. She is still suffering the effects and still off school over 5 weeks later. 2 other staff in my school have tested positive. And 2 children.

Covid really can present as 'just a cold'. I'm guessing thousands, if not tens of thousands of children have had it without realising or parents think they've just got a cold. Add to that the asymptotic children who are also spreading the virus.

NeverTwerkNaked · 01/11/2020 12:48

@OverTheRainbow88 my children didn't get any teaching at all from their schools between March and September.

OverTheRainbow88 · 01/11/2020 12:49

@NeverTwerkNaked

Yes sorry, that was about nurseries

SueEllenMishke · 01/11/2020 12:49

Can you tell me how I'm meant to that while also working full time?
We do homework, spellings and daily reading but it's pretty much impossible to work full and homeschool.
