AIBU?

To think this is a bit disrespectful?

If an adult child brings their SO to visit their old family home, and in full view of their parents and siblings, start to kiss passionately? It was so uncomfortable I had to leave the room.

Sounds incredibly cringey, and you definitely were not overreacting! If it happens again you should politefully cough or make your presence known and maybe pass a remark asking them if they'd like a barf bag for their uncontrollable "love".

I think I would have chucked a cushion at them and been jokey/siblingy-ish about my disgust. (But the disgust obviously would have been serious!)

Oh my goodness, how awkward Grin Was it your brother or your sister? Was drink involved? Do they have form? What was going on in the room when it started? So many questions about how on earth this could have happened Grin

But yes, its gross and I think you did the right thing by exiting.

This is also my first time meeting sibling's SO, and I really don't want to piss them off

Grim. Out of interest, did one or other of them seem more passive / less enthusiastic than the other? Sometimes, OTT PDAs can be a sign of something more sinister in the relationship.

What about them pissing you off though? Don’t you and your parents deserve a bit of respect too?

But sibling does have some social development issues
This could change things depending on the issues. Could it be that they need a bit of guidance on what is/isn’t generally socially acceptable?

Does their SO also have similar issues?

How long did it go on for?

I'm with the PP who said it's not really any more disrespectful than it would be in any other house, but obviously a prolonged makeout session is antisocial anywhere. So was it a snog, or did it go on for a while?

I can't understand why no one told them to stop.

In my family we speak freely to each other and in that situation the passionate pair would probably have had a cushion thrown at them and be told to pack it in. I really struggle to understand how some families simply don't seem to communicate about anything.

If your sibling has social difficulties it makes their inappropriate actions a bit more understandable but not the fact that no one spoke out. My daughter has SEN which makes it even more important for correct behaviour to be spelled out to her when needed as she might misinterpret situations and say and do the wrong thing. As her parent it's my job to guide her and even if she was 30 I'd still speak to her when it was needed.

OP this happened to me! My DB started basically dry humping his GF in the kitchen in front of the whole family! And nobody said anything!! Was mortifying, I didn’t know where to look. So bizarre! Shock

They were 19 at the time but I didn’t act like that when I was 19! They are now 30 and married and fortunately don’t do this anymore! Grin

Really? Shock What kind of sinister thing? I was desperately trying to avoid looking but it seemed 50/50 to me. Excuse me, I need to barf now

@MustardMitt

Full on snogging in public is acceptable only with randoms in a bar Grin

YANBU.

Agreed!

Given your sibling is in their 30s and you're "not close to my sibling at all, we barely speak TBH" and that your sibling "does have some social development issues" - were they trying to make some sort of point? It's a bit of a Fuck You All point, which is indeed pretty disrespectful.

But what I'm trying to get at was that this was not prompted by 'passion', this was plain old deliberate Look At Me And Marvel At My Life.

And I wonder if they were making the point to your parents, or to you.

Even if they had social development issues you should definitely say something or someone should of .
I'm sorry it's just weird , couples that are in love lust are touching maybe a little kiss but not full on snogging. Good god keep it for the bedroom people.

Oh god Conker isn't it mortifying! I just don't understand what goes on in some people's heads. I know some families are a lot more open than others but it's not like it was a house party, it was a family get-together...

I probably wouldn't be so horrified if they were married, they haven't been together long. As I said, this was my first time meeting sibling's SO.

My sister was like this! Her husband even used to talk about how he “was tired from last night, ha ha” in front of my parents. They wanted to show us all that they’re a couple, they’re both really insecure and it was all attention seeking. I told them to grow up and show some respect, it didn’t go down well but they haven’t been like it in front of me since. It’s cringey.

Surely the pair should know it's unacceptable though? I mean it's not like my sibling is completely clueless about all social rules, just a bit of a late developer. Maybe still in the 19 year old headspace Conker mentioned

I did get a sense of showing off in some way, but I thought I must be perceiving it wrong because why would you want to show off in that way to your family? It's not like you're trying to get back at an ex or something, it's your family Halloween Confused

If it was my brother, I'd tell him he was disgusting and if he carried on, I'd break his other arm (I broke his left arm 30 years ago in a wrestling match)

Why did no one just say alright Trevor, cut it out" in a jokey voice rather than all standing there giving him his kicks?

My ex used to do this with me in public - he was an abusive b@#&@&
He used to do it to assert ‘possession’ of me. I was mortified but daren’t stop him as he hated ‘rejection’. Dreadful times.
