Period pads in bathroom bin

My mum gets worried and anxious about all sorts of crazy things, courtesy of her mother. I am much more chilled and so we clash a bit...

I gave birth 2 weeks ago and, of course, I'm still bleeding a bit and wear biggish daily pads (the biggest one of the small ones, you know). My mum said to me that I shouldn't put them in the bin in the bathroom because of my DH and FIL. I should take a separate bag (and put it where???!!!).

Let me be straight with you: my answer was "not happening"!!!

Are you team "my mum" or, like me, you think "though"?? (Btw the boys of the house don't usually empty the bathroom bin)

As long as they’re rolled and wrapped I’m team you. And by wrapped I mean with the next pad’swrapper.

HelloDulling · 30/10/2020 14:19

Are you wrapping them before they go in the bin? I wouldn’t pop a bloody pad in the bin as it is (smelly, bit gruesome) but wrapped in loo roll, or a paper bag is fine.

WearyandBleary · 30/10/2020 14:19

Agree - roll and wrap and it’s fine

switswooo · 30/10/2020 14:19

YANBU. Are you wrapping them though? Maybe get a box of those small plastic sanpro bags? Then first wrap pad in the plastic from the new pad, and then put in a sanpro bag.

Who empties the bin? You should empty the bin every two days so the bathroom doesn’t smell.

Ohalrightthen · 30/10/2020 14:19

Get scented bags and a bin with a lid.

Sciurus83 · 30/10/2020 14:20

Team you obviously. Your poor mum and her old fashioned hang ups, isn't it great the world has moved on. Do you live with your in laws though?

Geppili · 30/10/2020 14:20

Roll and wrap.

blackteaplease · 30/10/2020 14:20

Isn't this what the bathroom bin is for?

Sighing000 · 30/10/2020 14:21

I use the bathroom bin. My mum made us use the outside bin as teens. Meant we had to go though four rooms and into the garden with every used sanitary towel. Was very embarrassing as a teenager.

Ihatesandwiches · 30/10/2020 14:21

When I lived abroad we had to put used toilet paper in a bin in the bathroom. I found it gruesome , but did it! No way am I having a bin in my loo. Used San Pro wrapped in loo roll and out in kitchen bin here. Sorry, I'm with your mum!

Sciurus83 · 30/10/2020 14:21

I'm just wondering why your mum is worried about your FIL and the bathroom bin?!

Porcupineinwaiting · 30/10/2020 14:21

I'd think ??? but my (usually very reasonable) MiL has said similar to your mum, suggesting it's a throwback to the days women were discouraged from discussing menstrual issues. Smile sweetly and ignore - I bet even your fil knows women bleed sometimes and yes, why would he be dealing w your bathroom bin.

IHateCoronavirus · 30/10/2020 14:21

Surely that is one of the reasons for a bathroom bin, no?
Team you 100% If the men are so sensitive about women’s reproductive health, they need to stay away from women’s reproductive organs.

CoffeeRunner · 30/10/2020 14:21

Rolled & wrapped are fine to go in the bin. In fact that’s what bathroom bins are for IMO.

Why do we need to protect males from the fact women have periods?

Frazzled13 · 30/10/2020 14:21

I’m with you. But where does your mum want you to put them? The main kitchen bin? Take them to the outdoor bin every time they’re changed?

SnuggyBuggy · 30/10/2020 14:22

Isn't that what a bathroom bin is for? I've never understood people being precious about them. It's not like it's shit.

CodenameVillanelle · 30/10/2020 14:22

What are bathroom bins for if not sanpro?
I hate this idea that men shouldn't be exposed to menstrual hygiene products. It's ridiculous.

Goosefoot · 30/10/2020 14:22

I'd roll and wrap, but I don't think your mother is totally unusual. I've known of families where sanitary products weren't put in the bathroom bin, they were put in the big bin, seemingly because they were seen as private or maybe more unsanitary?

I avoid putting them in the bathroom bin because the dog thinks they are there for her.

Whatwouldscullydo · 30/10/2020 14:23

Isnt that what a bathroom bin is for Confused

Whats going to happen to the men if they see a pad?

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/10/2020 14:23

Wrap them in nappy sacks (they are cheaper than the bags specifically for disposing of sanitary protection). As long as the bin has a lid then I don't see a problem.

Sparklesocks · 30/10/2020 14:23

Do you live in same house?
As pp have said as long as they’re wrapped i don’t see an issue with the bathroom bin.

Jessi1972 · 30/10/2020 14:23

Hi there,
Congratulations on the birth of baby Flowers
I have two bins in the toilet - one for toilet rolls and one for period products.
I got them from the poundshop.
Maybe you could do this?
As you or mum empty the bin what's the problem?
Hubby never empties the bins in our house either!😂😂😂😂

nicerbeing · 30/10/2020 14:24

My mum said to me that I shouldn't put them in the bin in the bathroom because of my DH and FIL.

I would have asked her wtf she thought rubbish was going to do, jump out of the bin and attack the men?

tearinyourhand · 30/10/2020 14:26

As long as it's wrapped it's fine. Wrapping it in extra plastic bags is ridiculous though, those single use sanitary disposal bags are a perfect example of a need being invented by a company who wanted to sell something. Pads contain plastic and come wrapped in plastic, but at least those bits of plastic arguably serve a purpose. A special bag is just adding another layer of plastic that serves no purpose at all.

2bazookas · 30/10/2020 14:26

pads bagged and bin with a lid on, I hope
