Period pads in bathroom bin

My mum gets worried and anxious about all sorts of crazy things, courtesy of her mother. I am much more chilled and so we clash a bit...

I gave birth 2 weeks ago and, of course, I'm still bleeding a bit and wear biggish daily pads (the biggest one of the small ones, you know). My mum said to me that I shouldn't put them in the bin in the bathroom because of my DH and FIL. I should take a separate bag (and put it where???!!!).

Let me be straight with you: my answer was "not happening"!!!

Are you team "my mum" or, like me, you think "though"?? (Btw the boys of the house don't usually empty the bathroom bin)

I wouldn't because of the envirement but a ceremonial garden burning of the sanpro seems so nice.

Noideawottodo · 30/10/2020 15:09

My dds chuck theirs in their bathroom bin, no wrapping or special bags. Empty the bin once a week. It doesn't stink unless you get right in it!

Whatwouldscullydo · 30/10/2020 15:10

Can’t believe people suggesting wrapping in next pad’s wrapper and plastic bag. Awful for the environment, and so unnecessary

Well you'd have to throw away the wrapper anyway so I don't see how it makes any difference if you wrap it up in it or not .

But I use reusables anyway...

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 30/10/2020 15:10

Ooo that’s fascinating! Was it that witches could use bodily products in spells to harm us? I’m off to google

GhostsUpMePosts · 30/10/2020 15:13

I guess the witches can fuck you up if they get hold of any of this stuff.

What a brilliantly apt conversation for the time of year....

Goosefoot · 30/10/2020 15:14

@Spacerader

Everyone seems to be obsessed with lids as well. Lids are not needed. God forbid if a man is offended because he sees something wrapped in a bin.

As long as the bin is emptied often so it doesnt smell who cares.

I suspect many people don't want to see bloody thing sin a bin, rather than just men.

Not to mention earbuds with wax on them. Gross.

Goosefoot · 30/10/2020 15:15

Or even "bloody things in a bin

mrsmrt1981 · 30/10/2020 15:15

I roll mine in toilet tissue and put in the bathroom bin. Never been an issue.

Noideawottodo · 30/10/2020 15:16

If the bin has a lid (ours does, pedal bin) then no problems

Goosefoot · 30/10/2020 15:17

Yes, I mean it would be one thing if the pads weren't part plastic and would disintegrate. But they are not really very biodegradable these days unless you get special ones. I don't think wrapping in the plastic wrapper would make it less degradable.
Queenoftheashes · 30/10/2020 15:20

The kitchen bin seems far worse to me. I have reusable pads and my boyfriend has to handle them when they go through the laundry 😂 he’ll live but we never have sex for some reason

grey12 · 30/10/2020 15:20

Regarding reusable pads, I agee with you, but I use Mooncup. I'm not going to buy loads of reusable pads because of a few weeks. Once my stitches are gone and I'm healed, I prefer not using pads at all

She sounds completely unreasonable. Does your husband actually mind? If not, why is she speaking on his behalf?

Geppili · 30/10/2020 15:25

My mother used to burn hers on our open fire. I remember being absolutely mortified when I was at a loss as to what to do with a used pad. She just grabbed it from me and put it on the fire to curl and smoulder in front of my sisters and stepfather! Mind you, I remember in secondary school loos, we had perpetual wall mounted incinerators going and you bagged your pad up in a paper bag with a pretty lady on, then popped it in the incinerator. I was fascinated and there was a myth that the whole school was heated by the combustion of Bodyform and lillets!

Catmaiden · 30/10/2020 15:28

Reading this reminds me of the horrible wall mounted sanpro incinerators that women's toilets used to have, for disposal.
I'm team bin, btw!

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 30/10/2020 15:28

I still believe this need to suddenly burn them - when you wouldn’t for eg a nappy or bandage - is a throwback to the fear of menstural blood’s evil power to harm, which is in many religions (yes I went off and googled)

ChasingRainbows19 · 30/10/2020 15:30

Why do people think it’s gross in a bathroom bin but fine in a kitchen binEnvy

Wrap and roll and empty bin daily if using a lot. It’s a part of my human functions.

chocatoo · 30/10/2020 15:30

OK to put them in the bin but only if securely wrapped otherwise imho rather revolting. Also I think it would be appropriate for you to empty the bin (and regularly) rather than to expect anyone else to.

jessstan1 · 30/10/2020 15:33

I'm with you as long as they are well wrapped. What does it have to do with your mother anyway unless you live with her? Same with father in law.
Your DH shouldn't care, he knows you bleed.

Bibidy · 30/10/2020 15:33

I personally wouldn't do this, I'd rather throw them into the main bin unless you empty the bathroom bin daily, otherwise they would start to smell.

But I'm the same as you OP and use a Ecocup usually.

Perfect28 · 30/10/2020 15:33

Are you living with them?

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 30/10/2020 15:34

If they are in an enclosed bin I don’t see the issue, if there just put in a open bin then tbh I think that’s disgusting.

Itisbetter · 30/10/2020 15:34

It might take a little bit before a moon cup sits comfortably. Modibod pants are probably the most comfortable thing you will ever wear. Game changerGrin

Whatwouldscullydo · 30/10/2020 15:34

Why Confused

Not as if op has never thrown away someone.elses dirty pants or seen cotton buds ir the manky old razor blades or a condom.or 2 in the bin Confused

SunshineCake · 30/10/2020 15:35

Exactly what does she think will happen to FIL and DH if they see a maternity pad?Hmm

Why the hell don't they empty the bin? Sort that out ffs.

DD is a lazy so and so and barely gets the wrappers in the bin but I have no clue what the males of the house think about pads as they aren't anything to be scared about, discussed, they are just part of life.
