Period pads in bathroom bin

My mum gets worried and anxious about all sorts of crazy things, courtesy of her mother. I am much more chilled and so we clash a bit...

I gave birth 2 weeks ago and, of course, I'm still bleeding a bit and wear biggish daily pads (the biggest one of the small ones, you know). My mum said to me that I shouldn't put them in the bin in the bathroom because of my DH and FIL. I should take a separate bag (and put it where???!!!).

Let me be straight with you: my answer was "not happening"!!!

Are you team "my mum" or, like me, you think "though"?? (Btw the boys of the house don't usually empty the bathroom bin)

OP posts:

It's a bin - its whole purpose in life is to hold waste items and to be honest I'd worry about anyone precious enough to be bothered by the sanitary towels in a family bathroom bin.

@ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes

I still believe this need to suddenly burn them - when you wouldn’t for eg a nappy or bandage - is a throwback to the fear of menstural blood’s evil power to harm, which is in many religions (yes I went off and googled)
I can see why you'd think that, but I'm not sure.

Burnable pads weren't around that long, really, people used cloth before that. But at the time they did appear there was a lot more burning of rubbish that went on and garbage pick up was not great in many places.

People also used to see a lot of things that included bodily fluids as possibly contaminating, or likely to attract vermin, in a way we don't now. I suppose because of better sanitation all round and infection control. We sometimes tend to think concern about menstruation in the past was all based in silly superstition, but it really wasn't as easily managed in the past and the biohazard element was real.

Could be. In early times it was believed women were at their most powerful during menstruation and men were afraid of them. I always thought burning was because it was hygienic but times have changed; as you say, we have more disposable things now and if they all had to be burned we'd never be without some sort of fire.

For gods sake don’t put them in individual plastic bags. That’s insane. All this unnecessary plastic is destroying our planet. Wrap in loo roll and in the bathroom bin. Ignore your mother OP, old fashioned views!!

slipperywhensparticus · 30/10/2020 15:40

I always have a lid on my bathroom bin my cats are minging and attracted to gross things

Noitjustwontdo · 30/10/2020 15:41

Congratulations on your lovely baby, surely your Mum should just be happy with her squishy new GC rather than focusing on what you do with your pads Confused.

I wrap them with the next pads wrapper and always put them in the bathroom bin, that’s all it’s for really along with empty toilet roll tubes.

Livpool · 30/10/2020 15:41

Your mum is being silly. That is all our bathroom bin is used for really. I wrap anything up but that is it

MsStillwell · 30/10/2020 15:42

Reading this reminds me of the horrible wall mounted sanpro incinerators that women's toilets used to have, for disposal.

Reading this reminds me of the horrible wall-mounted used sanitary towels in school Toilet cubicles!

So, did we ever discover if OP lives with these people?

SquirrelFan · 30/10/2020 15:43

I'd be tempted to stick them all over the wall facing the toilet, in an attractive pattern, of course.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 30/10/2020 15:44

And this is why, even though I would have liked the privacy, I didn't chuck my kids out of the bathroom as toddlers when I needed to change sanpro (obviously, after checking I was OK, including a little pat on the knee and an offer to get me a plaster, they carried on talking as toddlers - self-centred beings that they are.. but thank God my 9 year old finally decided it wasn't something he wanted to see).

wrapped/rolled in the bin is fine, doubly so if it has a lid and you're the only one who empties it anyway.

Stubble hair and toothpaste around the sink is way more disgusting IMO.

I once knew someone who came home from a casino because he 'touched a woman who was on her period so that was bad luck and no point staying'. I still have no idea how he knew she was on her period. I presume he just lost all his money and used it as an excuse

SpaceOP · 30/10/2020 15:44

I am not 100% convinced that the general agreement on this thread that men don't need to be protected from sanitary protection is necessarily true in real life. I've been a bit surprised by comments from women about this in the past. And had a very awkward conversation with a friend recently who has two boys as she was quite shocked that DS knows about periods and when I asked her whether surely the kids ave noticed at some point, or spotted some blood in the toilet or whatever, she said no because she makes a huge effort to ensure they never see anything...

I'm wondering why she thinks your dh and fil ferret around in the bathroom bin...

36weekswithno2 · 30/10/2020 15:46

@PatriciaPerch no one should be putting them down the toilet anyway! No matter where they live

in the late 60's we use to have brown paper bags to wrap them individually than dm would collect & dd would do his weekly incinerate of rubbish -
I wish we could get brown paper bags easily again environmentally sound & useful
In those days you use to sidle into the chemist & they virtually produced them from under the counter packed (you guessed it!) in a brown paper bag...

KeyWorker · 30/10/2020 15:49

Because DH and FIL what? Might not know what they are? Do they usually root around in the bin?

nicky7654 · 30/10/2020 15:50

I put mine in a dog poo bag then pop in the bin.

C8H10N4O2 · 30/10/2020 15:50

do roll and wrap. My mum is just difficult.... she said I needed to hide my post pregnancy belly with flowy clothes when we went out

How old is your mother??

Has anyone else's dog helpfully carried a used pad into the living room when guests were around, just so everyone could enjoy looking at it? Or is that just mine?

I went out the next day and bought a pedal bin that weighs slightly more than the dog in question so he can't knock it over.

Georgeoftheinternet · 30/10/2020 15:54

We would find it gross if men did this.

hesaidshesaidwhat · 30/10/2020 15:54

This is what a bathroom bin is for, again assume they are wrapped.

Your baby is 2 weeks old and your Mum is a Grandmother, what a shame that things like this are on her mind and what a shame that she has chosen to burden you with this.

fantasmasgoria1 · 30/10/2020 15:55

I use nappy sacks. My Fiance doesn't care he said where else would you put them?

nicerbeing · 30/10/2020 15:55

@Whatwouldscullydo

Can’t believe people suggesting wrapping in next pad’s wrapper and plastic bag. Awful for the environment, and so unnecessary

Well you'd have to throw away the wrapper anyway so I don't see how it makes any difference if you wrap it up in it or not .

But I use reusables anyway...

Surely that poster was referring to the addition of the plastic bag, not the available wrapper?
