Travellers foodbank challenge.

Devilesko · 30/10/2020 11:40

Posting for traffic and suggestions.

We have started the fb challenge again this year as it's needed more than ever.
We challenge family members to buy an extra weeks worth of food and donate to food banks. Nobody is left out, we all have to rise to the challenge and want to, tbh.

I have posted on dozens of pages asking to remember to include san pro.
If anyone has suggestions that might be forgotten, I'd appreciate the heads up. Also, just to let the people in supermarkets and food banks aware, as this is usually done on such a big scale.

So far I have family in Leicester and Cheshire signing up. But will post other areas as I become aware.
Any suggestions will be very helpful.
Tia.

@Doughnutlady you are being racist and offensive.

And yes, I'll report your comment. There should be no place for racism on Mumsnet (or anywhere else).

SoupDragon · 30/10/2020 18:27

@Doughnutlady

This is THE most perfect thread for virtue signalling. Bravo.
🙄

Ridiculous.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 30/10/2020 18:27

Doughnutlady you are being racist and offensive

@EmmaGrundyForPM could you point out these " racist and offensive " posts please?

SoupDragon · 30/10/2020 18:31

I doubt many of you have any involvement in traveller issues or are even aware of what they are

Because those issues are irrelevant on a thread about what to donAte to a food bank...? Or didn't you understand what the thread is About?

BilboBercow · 30/10/2020 18:32

Some people are really angry at the suggestion all travellers aren't animals living in squalor and might actually care about their communities.

OP I'd like to congratulations you on your classy behaviour in the face of such arseholery. You're a better woman than me.

You know exactly why she's being racist.
EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/10/2020 18:33

I mean, what is racist about her posts

Poorpigletsrevenge · 30/10/2020 18:34

@Devilesko What a lovely idea!!
I’m not a traveller, but I think I’ll also do an extra shop this week and take to the food bank. I’m going to include some kids and baby items too,

Thank you for the idea.

I’ve had some very hard times in my life, so see it as giving a bit back.

Saucery · 30/10/2020 18:52

“City apartment “ Grin Grin Grin

Genuinely good on you for looking after an abused dog. I’m not surprised you felt the need to tell us all that you were doing it, as you should indeed be proud of it.
I kind of get the feeling you’re still hinting a teency, weency bit without being outwardly racist because you know your post will be zapped but hey ho, at least you know you have to keep a lid on it because Mn tends to dislike racist twats.

Popcornriver · 30/10/2020 18:55

I think it's very generous if you're able to do it OP

GetYourGoatYouHavePulled · 30/10/2020 19:00

I think this is a lovely thing to do. In addition to food, I also include toiletries, toilet rolls, hand wash, kitchen/bathroom cleaning products in donations which can sometimes be overlooked.

yetanothernamitynamechange · 30/10/2020 19:09

I read this thread and thought what a lovely idea, then I read the comments Shock . Anyway, its still a great innitiative!

MitziK · 30/10/2020 19:16

@SchrodingersImmigrant

Got rid of racists and dic**eads arrive🙄

(I am censoring myself as it looks like MN van cope with cunt, but not much else😁)

Nah, just another racist.
saraclara · 30/10/2020 19:28

My nearest foodbank needs:
Fruit Juice (longlife),
Tinned Meat (stews, curry, meatballs),
Sponge Pudding (longlife),
Coffee,
Anti-Bac Spray Cleaners,
Washing Up Liquid,
Laundry Wash Tablets,
Cleaning Cloths

oakthorn · 30/10/2020 19:33

@Devilesko our local traveller community embrace this and I can assure you the local community really appreciate it. What a great thing to do and well done you for finding out what is needed. That's true community spirit. Go girl and your lovely families for helping .

TeflonTits · 30/10/2020 19:33

@Doughnutlady

Don’t mind me, just fostering another lurcher with a deliberately broken leg. It would be interesting to know what the people on this thread are actually doing on the ground. Just keep patting yourselves on the back in your city apartments.

What a ridiculous thread.

Not that it's any of your bloody business, but I made a quite substantial donation to the food bank recently, of mostly long life milk, canned veg and toiletries.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/10/2020 19:33

Mine mentions toothpastes, deodorants as the unusual ones.
Toothpaste would never cross my mind and yet it's such a basicBlush

kowari · 30/10/2020 19:38

Ours needs
UHT fruit juice
Steamed puddings
Tinned soup
Tinned pulses
Tinned potatoes
Tinned fruit
Small bags of sugar
Size 5/6 nappies
Toilet roll
Shampoo
Shaving kits

thewitchesofprestwick · 30/10/2020 19:38

This is a great idea and I’m not knocking it at all but I’m not going to buy food to donate. I’m going to give the money equivalent to my local food bank each week so that they can buy what they most need for their clients, or put it towards the cost of their premises. This is much more useful to them than random bags of shopping I might pick up.

Sirzy · 30/10/2020 19:41

I would imagine that happens a lot. When your in the position where you don’t think twice about having access to basics like toothpaste then until someone puts it into your mind you don’t consider it.

It would never have crossed my mind that baby food would be needed but really it’s blindingly obvious

Honeyandapple · 30/10/2020 19:43

I recently donated to a food bank that are also a baby donations station, they are always short on size 3 nappies they said. But they list on Facebook/ local flyers what they need now and again.

Good for you all who are doing this Smile (if you can afford it)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/10/2020 19:49

@Sirzy I guess so, yeah. I remember thinking they did only food too (a long time ago).

Chuggington2 · 30/10/2020 19:51

Baby toiletries - unscented bubble bath/hair wash, sudocreme or similar, wipes, baby toothbrushes, baby food pouches

Dish clothes, washing up liquid and clothes wash powder or liquid

Sugar free peanut butter or similar - keeps for ages and a decent source of protein/fat which can quickly stuck on some toast.

Chuggington2 · 30/10/2020 19:53

Oh baby toothpaste to go with the toothbrushes

PicardsFlute · 30/10/2020 19:56

This is amazing and incredibly generous - I salute you and your extended family! You’ll be helping an awful lot of people by the sound of it.
