Just posting here for traffic.
Three kids absolutely terrified after watching the new witches remake tonight, they are 4, 6 and 8 and love the original and the book so I didn't think twice about this. It's a pg too, but some of the things are really scary and weird too.
I enjoyed it but just a warning if you were planning this for the weekend, all 3 of my kids have already woken up with nightmares tonight and all in my bed!!

I was so disappointed. It was scary for my 2 and 4 yr old and they love to watch the original with me.

Plus they're were some good actresses that I love.sigh

wewillmeetagain · 29/10/2020 22:52

Me and the kids thought it was rubbish, the original is much better!

grassisjeweled · 29/10/2020 22:52

Is it on Netflix?

I'll watch it but kids can stick to Hotel Transylvania

pinkcattydude · 29/10/2020 22:53

Goosebumps is good too and free if you are on sky vip.

OkOkWhatsNext · 29/10/2020 22:55

The book in itself is terrifying.

TatianaBis · 29/10/2020 23:05

What do you think Parental Guidance means?

Would never occur to me to show it to a 4 and 6 year old.

AldiAisleofCrap · 29/10/2020 23:13

The original is disturbing too , what were you thinking showing it to 4 and 6 year olds. It’s not suitable for under 8s!

sociallydistained · 29/10/2020 23:18

I was watching actual horror movies at a ridiculous age, all shown to me by my friend who had them all on video. About age 8 I was watching Friday 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and IT and yet I was still just as terrified if not more so watching The Witches and Little Monsters (anyone remember that)? It had Fred Savage and is a PJ and yet that one gave me proper nightmares! 😂

MrsJBaptiste · 29/10/2020 23:19

I'm just jealous that you have 4 year olds that will sit and watch a whole film! 😣

VestaTilley · 29/10/2020 23:21

I’d never show The Witches to a child under 10!

Snoodleberry · 29/10/2020 23:22

On holiday in Cornwall and we went and had a full tea at the hotel the original film was filmed at. They had an actress wearing a full face mask and outfit as the grand high witch. I was terrified, my DD loved her Grin

That's amazing!

We went last year to the hotel after watching the film and had afternoon tea and took pics. Loved it no witch though!

PegasusReturns · 29/10/2020 23:25

@dublingirl66
You know what this movie is based on!?
Bast---

Huh?

GetTheDoorFrank · 29/10/2020 23:26

monkeysox seeing that picture of anne hathaway was enough to make me say fuck that for a nightmare 🙈🙈

PegasusReturns · 29/10/2020 23:26

I have to say it wouldn’t have occurred to me to watch this with under 8s.

The book and the original are scary!

The book traumatised me when I realised he never turned back into a human.
Summerfreeze · 29/10/2020 23:27

Totally unsuitable for such little children, you'll have some damage to undo there.

Actually the book is vile and sexist anyway.

ClarkGriswoldsChristmastree19 · 29/10/2020 23:33

@Justgorgeous

Wow! I wouldn’t have let those ages have watched the original let alone the remake. It is a scary film for children under 10 I think. Angelica Houston was absolutely brilliant though.
I think I read the book when I was 7, first film is definitely suitable for most 10 year olds!
GrannyGrr · 29/10/2020 23:38

Casper is a nice easy film.

BadDucks · 29/10/2020 23:39

It’s hard to know sometimes what’s going to freak them out. DS 13 watches stranger things without flinching and I’m hiding behind my hands. I put Gremlins on for him the other week as I remember loving it as a kid but he was totally freaked out and to be honest so was I. I hadn’t remembered all the disgusting scenes where they explode in the microve and get torn apart in a blender and shredder Shock I think I may have been one of those 80’s kids that was allowed to watch Nightmare on Elm Street at a young age so Gremlins probably seemed quite tame at the time!

3GirlsMamaBear · 29/10/2020 23:47

Totally agree with you OP! I started it the other night for movie night and I was a scared (yes I know!) of the chicken transformation.... her face with those bumps hanging down.... truly terrifying! I had to turn it off at that point because my daughter burst in to tears! to be fair my older two, 12 and 10 were fine, didn't actually think it was going to be that scary and in hindsight maybe not the best choice for my 6yr old! (bad parenting moment!)… DD1 and DD2 watched it the next day and weren't really bothered by it but I think I'll pass!

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/10/2020 23:54

With my dd, we had a talk before she watched films that it wasn’t real. As a result she’s always been quite philosophical about horror type movies. She loves Monster House. But again she wouldn’t have watched that until at least 8. The only film she cannot watch is The Little Dinosaur as it’s too sad.

I think it really does depend on the child as for how frightening they will find a film. But I would not have shown my dd watch the original Witches at 4 or 6. At that age, we were still firmly in the kiddie stage. I’d say maybe have a rethink as to how to let your eldest watch more grown up stuff as the littlies can’t be collateral damage. Was your eldest really that scared or did the younger 2 wind them up a bit?

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/10/2020 23:58

BadDucks
I agree, I find films far more tame these days, which may be why your ds freaked. Dd 12 and has now watched a couple of modern cert 15 horrors - I watched them first as I really like horror. They’re not even scary. And with her “they’re not real” philosophy she couldn’t be less bothered.

NeverAMillionMilesAway · 30/10/2020 00:01

@rottiemum88

I'd never dream of showing this film to a 4 or 6 year old, nor the original for that matter. No wonder they had nightmares
This. (although obviously it's up the OP what she lets her kids watch) The original Witches scared the hell out of me as a kid- peeling off their faces, the horrible bald heads and the witch trying to lure the kid from the tree- terrifying! I haven't watched it since I was around 8, but I do remember being very scared.
june2007 · 30/10/2020 00:01

My son was scared f Jungle book and Beuty and the beast. (But it was more the noise he couldn,t stand, for a child who shouts he is very sensitive to noise.)
