Just posting here for traffic.
Three kids absolutely terrified after watching the new witches remake tonight, they are 4, 6 and 8 and love the original and the book so I didn't think twice about this. It's a pg too, but some of the things are really scary and weird too.
I enjoyed it but just a warning if you were planning this for the weekend, all 3 of my kids have already woken up with nightmares tonight and all in my bed!!

My two are 5 & 8 and DD is racing through the book so we can watch this on Halloween.

I've always thought the original was quite scary and have put off watching it. For some reason I thought the remake would be better. Think I'll give it a miss as my 5yo in particular is quite sensitive.

Angelfish2021 · 29/10/2020 21:57

@Goosefoot that's true, but as they enjoyed the original film so much too I assumed this would be fine.

I’m really surprised people have shown such young children the original witches - I was traumatised by it as a child and was about 8 when it cane out. Her FACE OMG. I was also scared by the David Jason BFG. Realising I was a bit of a wuss.

JuneFromBethesda · 29/10/2020 21:59

We started to watch this - then Anne Hathaway's true face emerged and that was that. My 9-year-old didn't like it and to be honest neither did I!!

Also her accent was terrible - all over the place. Very annoying.

Watch the Addams family instead Grin it’s on Netflix

BadgerBadgerMushroom · 29/10/2020 22:00

I was quite freaked out by it to be honest. Those CGI witch rats are creepy! My DSS 12 said 'Well that was scary!' when it ended.

Angelfish2021 · 29/10/2020 22:00

My 8 year old said she wasn't scared and acted normal but has just woken up saying a witch was there!!
My kids watched a hansel and gretel on Netflix the other day and I thought that witch was pretty scary and they were fine with her so I had no reservations with this. Familiar movie and story I didn't see any problem.

Jeez! I watched the original when I was 8 and was absolutely terrified! Had nightmares for months!

I'm sick of constant remakes being churned out instead of original content. IF people stopped purchasing them maybe Hollywood would stop doing it Hmm

Ideasplease322 · 29/10/2020 22:01

I still remember the terror of the original movie.

Angelfish2021 · 29/10/2020 22:02

Addams family and addams family values on Netflix are brilliant

I read The Witches as a child. I remember distinctly that my Mum and Dad asked me to go to bed, but I was quite close to the end of the book. I used a torch under the covers to read to the end. I had nightmares for weeks!

Arthersleep · 29/10/2020 22:02

I remember letting my son watch the original film. He's a very logical kid so it didn't particularly scare him. Until I went and kissed him goodnight, having first found a blue disclosing tablet at the back of my bathroom cabinet!

Leaannb · 29/10/2020 22:03

@Angelfish2021

It's a kids film based on a kids book! As I said they love the book and original
Its rated for 8 and above...Start checking out Common Sense Media
kleew1 · 29/10/2020 22:03

I still look at women with square shoes on and think witch... Im 31 Blush!

Rentacar · 29/10/2020 22:03

Thanks for the heads up. We were going to watch this but mine are quite sensitive.

Arthersleep · 29/10/2020 22:04

Funnily enough we were going to watch it today, until saw the price! So we settled for Paddington Bear! Can't beat it!

Angelfish2021 · 29/10/2020 22:05

Well my nearly 9 year old has had a nightmare so the rating hasn't helped there!
Not posting to be judged for showing my kids the movie, just for a heads up ☺️

I only let me daughter watch the original this year. Shes 12. I think its really really scary and not suitable for little ones. Also agree why have they remade it?

Namechange1234589 · 29/10/2020 22:06

The original film haunted me for many, many months as a child. To be honest I don't even like watching the film now as an adult. Would definitely not be brave enough to watch the remake!

Nacreous · 29/10/2020 22:06

The witches gave me nightmares for weeks as a child. I loved the book nonetheless but bah, it gave me shivers. I don't think I could have coped at four or six and barely at 8. I still haven't seen the film as film music was always too loud and pushing the emotions so I just couldn't cope until I was maybe 12.

I was a strange child though, I read Sherlock Holmes quite happily aged 7 or 8.

user1463178569 · 29/10/2020 22:07

I'm in two minds watching this, as I hated the original and my daughter watched it in school in y2 and had very similar reaction. To this day, she questions why they showed her at that age and she's 12 now.

JJsDinerWaffles · 29/10/2020 22:08

The book is terrifying too! I saw the original film (which I believe Roald Dahl hated) on my first ever cinema trip and didn’t sleep for weeks.

Thanks for the warning though! Did the film stick more closely to the book ending?

Newfornow · 29/10/2020 22:10

Adams’s family was fun. Would you say it’s ok for 12 year old. Not used to this type of film.
