Bovril and Marmite ... is the same thing isn't it ?

Just made myself the most delicious fresh toast with lashings of butter and Bovril..... yum 😁
Said to husband in passing: "I don't like Marmite as much but Bovril I could empty a tub in days!"
DH: "Surely it's the same thing isn't it ?".
The look on my face said it all 😆

YABI = it's the same thing!
YANBU = it's 2 totally different things and anyone saying it is not needs a smack with a wet fish !

I LOVE Bovril on toast. Particularly in the winter. But marmite is my number one.. I have it on loads of things - a dollop is excellent on the batter of fish and chips. It kind of melts in and you can dip your chips in it. Also good on margarita pizza, and on weetabix, with butter (like toast, if you see what I mean). Yum yum!

Nottherealslimshady · 29/10/2020 09:41

Very different but equally gross on toast.

Gatehouse77 · 29/10/2020 09:42

A teaspoon of marmite in a cheese sauce is delicious too 😋

megletthesecond · 29/10/2020 09:46

I miss marmite. But it's not gluten free and I kept getting ill.

FadedRed · 29/10/2020 09:47

@LakieLady: you can get Bovril cubes, same taste, no gunky jar lid.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 29/10/2020 09:49

I love Marmite on toast or in a sandwich with cheese and cucumber. Also great in a bolognese.

I've never had Bovril despite my nan constantly offering it through my teenage years when I was vegetarian. How beefy is it? I've got a super fussy DS but he might go for that.

Gotthetshirt23 · 29/10/2020 09:53

Marmite roast tatties
Wink
Hot cups of Bovril
Both good on toast

QueenPaws · 29/10/2020 09:55

Team marmite. Especially the XO one

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 29/10/2020 09:56

I put Marmite under the cheese on a piece of toast. Oatcakes with butter, marmite and cucumber are a nice lunch too.

EveryPlanet it's really good isn't it! The first couple of mouthfuls tasted wrong and far too salty, and then I got used to it and it's my go-to on toast at the moment.

LadyPenelope68 · 29/10/2020 09:56

OMG! My husband has Bovril on toast. We’ve been married for 25 years, I thought he was a weirdo as I’ve never come across ANYONE else who eats it that way. I can now tell him he’s not a lonely weirdo! 🤣

BovrilonToast · 29/10/2020 09:59

Bovril on toast is amazing.

Marmite, meh...

willloman · 29/10/2020 10:02

Marmite is yeast based.
Brilliant Bovril is beef stock.
Just try drinking a cup of terrible hot marmite...
Get that wet fish ready.

RedElephants · 29/10/2020 10:08

My mate Marmite Grin

I'm a Marmite girl
My boys when little, preferred Vegemite Hmm
I've never had Bovril, so couldn't say..

Rosebel · 29/10/2020 10:16

I hate Bovril but I could eat Marmite on toast all day. Does your husband actually eat either of them?

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/10/2020 10:21

One of them makes really nice gravy, the other doesn't.

gamerchick · 29/10/2020 10:23

@gamerchick, what do you do with the Marmite to have it with roast potatoes - do you add it to the fat before cooking?

Bovril went veggie for a while - it's beefy again now though: www.theguardian.com/uk/2004/nov/19/foodanddrink

JeffVaderneedsatray · 29/10/2020 10:44

Bovril on toast is the food of the gods. It's my 'poorly' food. (That and Heinz Cream of Tomato soup. In fact Bovril toast dipped into said soup is beyond nectar). I love it as a hot drink too.

Marmite is VILE. Bleugh.
Never had Vegemite because, well, it's a yeast extract and thus will no doubt be vile.

LeslieYep · 29/10/2020 11:05

Bovril on toast or Bovril in a mug with toast dipped in, amazing.
I love Bovril but marmite can do one.

My DC like Bovril too, but their DGM is a marmite fan all the way! They eat both sadly. Hoping to get them onside.

LeslieYep · 29/10/2020 11:07

Oh and Bovril on a crumpet!
Try on toast with runny egg on top. Lovely.

Laiste · 29/10/2020 12:00

So ... does bovril taste like an oxo cube? (never had it in any form)

Has anyone tried marmite as a hot drink?

(DD (6yr) is eating marmite on whole meal bread right now :) )

VisitingtheInfidel · 29/10/2020 12:08

Vegemite tastes like someone stirred a spoonful of Marmite into Vaseline. 🤢
I’m not a big fan of Marmite but the lower salt one was ok. Bovril is lovely on toast.

EverydayDrudge · 29/10/2020 12:20

@megletthesecond

Tesco do a version that is gluten free and it's a far superior product in my opinion - thick like marmite used to be, none of this runny business.

At the beginning of my career I had a boss who asked me to make her a hot oxo cube to drink one day. I had never heard of bovril as a hot drink, and was so Hmm about it that I took her a cup of hot water and an oxo on the side because I couldn't believe that I'd understood her right. We only had bone China floral teacups and saucers in that office, too, it was very weird 🤣

Nowadays I understand the appeal of a savoury hot drink, and have found solace in half a low salt stock cube on more than one occasion - normal stock cubes are WAY too salty to use as a drink, and the sane goes for a full low salt one. Is bovril really salty too?

I think I have had bovril in times gone by, and used it as you would a stock cube in beef dishes.

Ariela · 29/10/2020 12:32

I think the only 'same' thing about Bovril & Marmite is they both contain masses of salt.

SospanFrangipan · 29/10/2020 12:52

Anyone remember chicken bovril 😋 That was top tier on toast!
