Bovril and Marmite ... is the same thing isn't it ?

Just made myself the most delicious fresh toast with lashings of butter and Bovril..... yum 😁
Said to husband in passing: "I don't like Marmite as much but Bovril I could empty a tub in days!"
DH: "Surely it's the same thing isn't it ?".
The look on my face said it all 😆

YABI = it's the same thing!
YANBU = it's 2 totally different things and anyone saying it is not needs a smack with a wet fish !

Your dp Shock

dancingqueen345 · 28/10/2020 22:42

Your husband needs to get in the bin. Mad man.

Bovril all the way.

Topseyt · 28/10/2020 22:44

@HOkieCOkie

Marmite isn’t vegetarian, vegimite is vegetarian tho.
Marmite is yeast extract, which is most certainly vegetarian. Vegan too. I like it.

Vegemite is also based on yeast extract, and is an Australian brand, I believe. Also vegan. I don't like it as much.

Bovril is beef extract, not yeast. It is not at all the same thing and is definitely not suitable for vegetarians.

ZombieAttack · 28/10/2020 22:45

Completely different, yet both disgusting.

mollypuss1 · 28/10/2020 22:46

Completely different, yet both delicious.

CloudPop · 28/10/2020 22:47

They taste completely different. I like marmite but prefer bovril

Noangelbuthavingfun · 28/10/2020 22:49

Definitely some "marmite" responses on here about Bovril !
Let's see :
If you love Bovril - how else do you have it other than on buttered toast or hot drink ?
If you are camp marmite (or vegimite) what else do you have it with ?

Marmite is the food of gods.
The other two are foul!
Bovril is beef!! 🐮🐮🐮

DeRigueurMortis · 28/10/2020 22:54

#TeamBovril here.

Not it's not the same.

Apart from on toast or as a drink I've been known to pop some in stews/soups where the flavour needed "beefing" up with much success.

Not really a fan of marmite/vegimite - I can definitely taste the "yeast" it (and I don't like it).

OrtamLeevz · 28/10/2020 22:57

DH puts a teaspoon of Bovril in with the mince if it's his turn to make cottage pie. I only ever have it in a hot drink - usually if I'm ill and can't face a plate of actual food. One jar lasts a couple of years at least.

We get through a lot of Marmite in this house, dc love it and I am partial to it on toast.

Topseyt · 28/10/2020 22:58

Camp Marmite here. I have it on hot buttered toast. I also sometimes use a small amount of it in vegetable stock for gravy or in a vegetarian chili/bolognese sauce and it gives a good depth of taste.

CounsellorTroi · 28/10/2020 23:02

Bovril on hot buttered crumpets is amazing. I only know this because DH put it on my crumpets by mistake.

Gatehouse77 · 28/10/2020 23:02

Interesting fact: Bovril stopped using meat products back in 2004 because of mad cow disease. But returned to adding them in 2006.

CounsellorTroi · 28/10/2020 23:03

I like marmite too.

MotherofPearl · 28/10/2020 23:05

Your DH is deranged OP. In what universe are Marmite and Bovril the same?

I've not had Bovril in ages and now I'm really craving some.

Twillow · 28/10/2020 23:09

Each to their own. Bovril is for me only acceptable as a hot drink. Marmite is for spreading.

Chloemol · 28/10/2020 23:13

Marmite is revolting. Bovril much nicer

twobrews · 28/10/2020 23:15

Completely different.
I've never had Bovril on toast though, I've had it as a drink but I prefer OXO.

I use marmite in loads of things, can't make beef/pork/lamb gravy without it. Marmite on toast is my comfort food if I'm feeling under the weather.

PitchImperfect · 28/10/2020 23:23

Bovril on toast, Marmite on fresh bread with lots of proper butter. That's the law in my house. The kids get my Hmm face if they ask for Marmite on toast or Bovril on bread.

plominoagain · 28/10/2020 23:36

Teaspoon of marmite stirred into a saucepan of buttery spaghetti .

Sod the family , I can eat a painful by myself

jessstan1 · 28/10/2020 23:38

Marmite is full of B vitamins and much better for you than Bovril, though Bovril is nice. I love Marmite on hot buttered toast.....which reminds me.....

SwimmingOnEggshells · 28/10/2020 23:41

Your husband is certifiably mad. I'm team Bovril but haven't had it in years. Will have to get some, it's delicious! Full of vitamins according to my late granny Grin

ImFree2doasiwant · 28/10/2020 23:44

@plominoagain i had forgotten about marmite spaghetti!!!! I suppose its too late to make some....

PickAChew · 28/10/2020 23:50

Vegemite is a bit like salty margarine.
