Bovril and Marmite ... is the same thing isn't it ?

Just made myself the most delicious fresh toast with lashings of butter and Bovril..... yum 😁
Said to husband in passing: "I don't like Marmite as much but Bovril I could empty a tub in days!"
DH: "Surely it's the same thing isn't it ?".
The look on my face said it all 😆

YABI = it's the same thing!
YANBU = it's 2 totally different things and anyone saying it is not needs a smack with a wet fish !

Never too late !

81Byerley · 28/10/2020 23:53

Marmite is delicious and Bovril is the devil's food.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/10/2020 23:58

Please will everyone stop saying camp marmite, camp bovril, etc
The first reference to it & I thought the thread was going own the route of bringing camp coffee into the equation.
Also dark brown, sticky and makes a revolting hot drink.

I do like marmite on toast occasionally though. I fancy it maybe once every six months or so - a teeny jar lasts forever.

gamerchick · 29/10/2020 00:00

The only thing marmite is good for, is roast potatoes.

MiddlesexGirl · 29/10/2020 00:01

Team Marmite here. On buttered toast of course.

Throckmorton · 29/10/2020 00:08

For the marmiters - which flavour do you prefer? I'm partial to the XO.

Felifox · 29/10/2020 00:12

Bovril* on toast or to drink was a childhood favourite and definitely a winter drink . My dh liked it on crumpets with lot of butter. Prefer it to marmite.

*Drat I'll have to buy some now.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 29/10/2020 00:15

Marmite, Bovril and Vegemite are all delicious and all different. Marmite and Vegemite are essentially the same thing (by product of beer) but definitely different. I assume different secret ingredients.

Now I really fancy toast but have no bread.

Noangelbuthavingfun · 29/10/2020 07:44

Ooh ... on potatoes or spaghetti ! Never tried that thanks for the recommendations !
I predict Bovril sales will soar for a day now 👍😆
I agree my DH is mad.... I'll have to reconsider our relationship lol

I know I’m coming down with something when I start craving a cup of bovril. And I agree with a PP that Bovril on a hot buttered bagel is amazing.

I also like it on fresh bread, with butter obviously.

But for toast, it has to be marmite.

FallonsTeaRoom · 29/10/2020 08:02

I go through phases where I crave Marmite on toast and have it for breakfast every day then I ignore it for weeks.

I do use it in spaghetti Bolognese, shepherds pie to oomph up the flavour a bit.

And a cheese and Marmite sandwich is food of the gods. Not spread smoothly, just roughly so some bits have no Marmite and others you get a burst of the intense flavour when you bite into it... 😋

LakieLady · 29/10/2020 08:05

@Leeds2

Completely different!

Bovril is lovely as a hot drink, reminds me of being at the football. In the dim and distant past ..............

I like a Bovril drink now and again, but I have never found a way of stopping the lid of the jar seizing up completely, so stopped buying it.

Maybe I should just buy some and open the jar every couple of days to stop it clagging up to the point where it's impossible to open.

Classic marmite, of course - the original and best.
jay55 · 29/10/2020 08:14

Bovril with butter on crumpets.

I love marmite too, and if I want salty spread under soft cheese marmite is my go too. On toast it's an even split.

MaskingForIt · 29/10/2020 08:19
@StillMedusa huh just assumed because they had vegimite it as meat equivalent.
Marmite and Vegemite are made by different companies. Both are vegan.

Beautyoftheirdreams · 29/10/2020 08:22

My DP loves bovril on toast but hates marmite.

I love either on toast but they definitely taste different

Earslaps · 29/10/2020 08:23

Marmite belongs on toast (or just licked from a spoon Blush). Also good to add depth of flavour to stews or cheese sauce.

Bovril belongs as a nice hot drink. Can also be used as a stock.

Vegemite (and New Zealand marmite) belongs in the bin.

MadCatLady71 · 29/10/2020 08:23

Nigella has a recipe for marmite pasta that is absolutely the best thing for nights when you simply CBA.

Lemonyfuckit · 29/10/2020 08:40

Marmite on hot buttered toast is delicious - mmmmmmm now I really want some.
Haven't had Bovril (only had it as a hot drink) since I was little and my Grandmother made it for me - I didn't actually realise you could still get this but now I feel like I want some!
Marmite buttery spaghetti sounds very good, I shall give it a go.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/10/2020 08:45

I've never tried Bovril on toast. Hmm

I've only ever had it as a hot drink (very popular in the trenches in WW I)

I've got to go and buy some Bovril now. Smile

AliMonkey · 29/10/2020 08:48

Marmite and butter on hot toast nearly every morning here. Cheese and Marmite toastie is a favourite too. Bovril would be a poor substitute.

Missing the squeezy Marmite jars though as end up using more than I need from the glass ones - anyone managed to get hold of one recently?

@gamerchick, what do you do with the Marmite to have it with roast potatoes - do you add it to the fat before cooking?

ZombieAttack · 29/10/2020 09:24

Despite my hatred of both I do love twiglets and will use Marmite and Bovril in cooking. I also have to keep a jar incase my DM or my DB stay as they love it.

Curious- so why did you post so categorically that Marmite was not veggie when you actually had no idea?

longwayoff · 29/10/2020 09:31

Had some roasted sweet potato at restaurant this weekend, not usually a fan but it was delicious. It had been brushed with a soy glaze. I'm going to try it using bovril instead of soy. Cooked in butter with a touch of bovril, should be good. Can't bear marmite in cooking for some reason it makes everything taste of cardboard. Shudder.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 29/10/2020 09:39

Has anyone tried the marmite peanut butter? I didn't expect to like it but it is divine. One tablespoon provides 79% of your RDA of B12.
