Toilet lid up or down?

Fattynotfitty · 28/10/2020 10:47

I'd lived on my own (no partner) for a while and gotten used to having things the way i want them to be. I've always left the toilet lid up so all i have to do is go into the toilet and sit down for a wee when needed. My 13 yr old DS has also been told to leave it this way and to just put the toilet seat down when he's used it.
My partner now prefers both the seat and lid to be put down after every use and while i can see his point i still struggle and end up leaving the lid up as that's what im used to!
How does everyone else do it?

YABU- Toilet lid down
YANBU- Toilet lid up

Just to add i'm female if thats makes a difference :)

ALWAYS closed. Anything else is not very attractive.

Bargebill19 · 28/10/2020 10:52

Closed. Stops things accidentally falling in the bowl. If you flush with the lid closed less ‘matter’ is sprayed into the air and on to surrounding items such as toothbrushes.
The act of flushing causes bacteria etc to become airborne.

Carishina · 28/10/2020 10:53

Definitely lid down. Google “toilet plumes” for why.

AvoidingRealHumans · 28/10/2020 10:54

Closed, I just think it looks better that way.
I do leave the upstairs one open overnight though as I have 2 sons and have been victim to them being half asleep in the middle of the night and just going for it with the lid shut.

DynamoKev · 28/10/2020 10:54

Fucking ridiculous.

msbevvy · 28/10/2020 10:55

Lid always closed.
Ever since our toilet turned into a fountain during heavy rain.

bellinisurge · 28/10/2020 10:55

Down. A) yeauch! Why wouldn't you? B) we have a cat. That's an adventure the cat doesn't need.

Noitjustwontdo · 28/10/2020 10:56

@AvoidingRealHumans I relate to this, the clean up was not pretty.

Comefromaway · 28/10/2020 10:57

Closed. Prevents spray when flushing

babyguffingtonstrikesagain · 28/10/2020 10:57

Lid has been down ever since a previous thread on here. It never occurred to me how much muck sprayed out of our toilet every time it was flushed.

joystir59 · 28/10/2020 10:57

Toilet lids are there for hygienic reasons. They should be put down before flushing the toilet to prevent bacterial or viral microbes being whisked into the air by the flush.

Fattynotfitty · 28/10/2020 10:59

@DynamoKev

Fucking ridiculous.
Care to elaborate???

You have it how you want it in your own home.

I'm not too fussed either way, but often close it because things have been known to blow off the bathroom windowsill and can drop into the toilet.

I'm not denying toilet plumes, but I'm sure some people will be along to tell us all about the thick clouds of shit around toilets.

Fattynotfitty · 28/10/2020 11:01

I thought i'd be outvoted haha, to be fair i've read about the fact it sprays things into the air and onto toothbrushes etc, luckily my toilets are seperate to bathrooms and there are no personal items for it to spray onto but i know that isnt an excuse!

Down, always. I put the lid down before I even flush it.

ShortFatandDumpy · 28/10/2020 11:07

Down.

Oldraver · 28/10/2020 11:09

At the moment always down as we have a kitten. Though I get this is more hygienic anyway

Bargebill19 · 28/10/2020 11:10

@Fattynotfitty

Ah! Then it’s up to you. (Which it was/is anyway!!)

happymummy12345 · 28/10/2020 11:10

The lid itself up.

WanderingMilly · 28/10/2020 11:13

Always down. Looks more attractive, I don't want things dropping in there and most of all, it's more hygienic

Derekhello · 28/10/2020 11:16

Our kitten (she’s older now) fell in once and it’s been down ever since, she managed to get out and I was there to help her but the thought of what could’ve happened stays with me 😿
honeylulu · 28/10/2020 11:23

Lid down! Hygiene OP! I don't want piss and shit particles sprayed over my toothbrush and make up.

Also looks much nicer/tidier. Can't stand seeing estate agent photos ie renovation photos where the lid is up and you can see inside the lavatory pan. Just yuck!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 28/10/2020 11:26

Definitely down. I’m the only one who bothers in this house though!

During my frequent scrolls through Rightmove I judge houses where the lid has been left up.

VinylDetective · 28/10/2020 11:27

Down. Always down.

BringMeThatHorizon · 28/10/2020 11:30

Lid down. DH and I had words about him leaving the seat up/me wanting it down and eventually agreed that it seemed the fairest thing to do - both make the effort to close fully and no more arguments.
