Toilet lid up or down?

Fattynotfitty · 28/10/2020 10:47

I'd lived on my own (no partner) for a while and gotten used to having things the way i want them to be. I've always left the toilet lid up so all i have to do is go into the toilet and sit down for a wee when needed. My 13 yr old DS has also been told to leave it this way and to just put the toilet seat down when he's used it.
My partner now prefers both the seat and lid to be put down after every use and while i can see his point i still struggle and end up leaving the lid up as that's what im used to!
How does everyone else do it?

YABU- Toilet lid down
YANBU- Toilet lid up

Just to add i'm female if thats makes a difference :)

I believe that Sheng Fui says you should ensure the toilet lid is always closed after use, otherwise your wealth will seep away through it.
I have tried both methods and I have to say it has had zero effect on my bank balance - and I'm still not 'flushed' with cash! Grin

Lid down in my house - always. Male or female user both have to exert the same effort before and after use Grin. I HATE it when we have visitors and they leave the seat and/or lid up 😞

The lid is not decorative (though I agree with PP that it looks way better and less gross closed).

It is there for a reason and serves a purpose.

During flushing, some of the contents of the receptacle - urine, faeces, bacteria, blood etc. - aerosolise and float around to land on nearby surfaces.

Like, say, for example, your toothbrush.

No. Fucking. Thanks.

cariadlet · 28/10/2020 11:43

I prefer the toilet seat down but the lid up even though I know that putting it down is more hygienic. I think it stems from a couple of bad experiences in public toilets where people have closed the lid to hide their unflushable shits.

If I go to use a toilet and the lid is down, I always wonder what I'm going to find when I lift it up.

rottiemum88 · 28/10/2020 11:44

luckily my toilets are seperate to bathrooms and there are no personal items for it to spray onto

So you don't have a sink to wash your hands in the same room as the toilet? That's not very hygienic Confused

Lid down, otherwise what's the reason for it?

bellinisurge · 28/10/2020 11:48

The house I grew up in didn't have a sink in the room where the toilet was - you had to walk all of three steps to go into the bathroom next door to do it. At worst, you could go to the kitchen and wash your hands there.
Upside was that you didn't have to wait for someone to finish on the loo before you took a shower.

giantangryrooster · 28/10/2020 11:48

When you flush with lit open a lot more bacteria is spread in the room.

It’s pretty normal in older houses.

Down.
In my two newly refurbished bathroom the flush button is behind the lid (when up) so you need to close the lid to flush anyway. And still some of the guests pull it up again after flushing, no idea why!

Whoooootaminute · 28/10/2020 11:55

Diwn

Although I grew up in an 'up' household and visiting family members still lesve ours up.

The lid is there for a reason.

No our sink is in with the bathroom which is adjacent to the toilet so a couple of steps away

It should be lid down. Other than what's the point in a lid if its not used, it prevents anything escaping when flushing and anything falling in when not in use.

The old argument used to be seat up or down - females sit, males may sit or stand. If the subject of seat up/down came up I would argue that as preference on how the toilet is used at the time, and putting the obligation on males to lift the seat, but not being willing to lower the seat.
Adding the lid into the equation means it is 'cleaner' and the argument is valid requiring all to lower the lid

Down. Snakes, massive spiders, rats and monsters can come up the up the plumbing you know.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 28/10/2020 12:07

Down.

Our toilet was separate to the bathroom & sink until we knocked through & it was still always down.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/10/2020 12:13

Another one who keeps it down to stop the kittens falling in and the big cats drinking out of it.

Very common years ago. DH's grandma lived in an old fashioned council flat many years ago. The toilet was in a small room next to the bathroom. The only sinks were in the bathroom and kitchen.

That block of flats is still there. Largely privately owned now but looking outwardly completely unchanged.

There are still homes where this arrangement exists, even though I don't think they are built like that anymore.

Ashdownstar · 28/10/2020 12:21

I read somewhere once that if the lid is down when it's flushed, there is a greater force of whatever a flushed toilet unleashes, so it goes out sideways and much further. Have no idea re the truth of the matter, but I don't much care, as far as I'm aware nobody has ever been stricken by disease through flushing my more than adequately clean loo.
Our seat stays down and lid up in our house, usually.

Ashdownstar · 28/10/2020 12:22

My loo is separate to bathroom. Sink in bathroom. It's really not the end of the world.

randomchap · 28/10/2020 12:35

Down, because the cat would try to drink out of it otherwise.

Also it's a pretty design and makes the bathroom look nicer.
